How to connect your guitar to your iPad or iPhone

I want to know if with a video app on my iPad pro you can now record video, singing and acoustic guitar at the same time without using software to sync audio and video? Thank you.

Forgive my ignorance but would it be much different with the new devices like for me i have a iPhone 12, which is usbc and doesn't have a headphone jack. For something like this would setup be much different?

No different, just use an official apple usb-c to 3.5mm headphones dongle and you’re set

iPhone 12 doesn't have USB c, it's lightning so u hv to buy the converter from apple

You can record into any recording software on iPad such as Garageband using "Audio Units extensions" within Garageband and Logic pro for iPad, Cubase, etc. or you can simply do a screen recording from the iOS control center screen. If you arent sure how to do that, google "how to screen record on iOS"

So I purchased a guitar cable that has the c type end to plug straight into my iPad Pro. Garage band picks it up as if it’s an outgoing plug in (like headphones), and won’t record any guitar. I can’t find any info online, so do I just need this device and my iPad will recognize it? Thank you!!!

any or iRig HD 2 or GoGuitar Pro will do the trick. basically you need a USB-C audio interface that has low power to work off the iPad power. focusrite Scarlett solo, arturia Minifuse 1, etc

Like the orange amp in the background…. My fiance that passed in ‘99 (he was 20) was obsessed with his Orange amps and preamps…, Anyway, I wanted to use this for Garage Band and use my electric, yes, but mainly my Martin. It’s not electric/acoustic so I use a pick up. In that case…..l?!?!? Does any of this apply? I have an iPhone 13 Pro, iPad 2019 (not Pro) and 2015 Macbook if it matters… Still don’t understand too why you need a patch chord? Does the little analog converter thing take patch chord in and connect headphone jack out (i heard you could get ones that connect to the charge port and also some that connect to the headphone jack and so have a built in headphone jack in them…..

Sorry to hear about your fiancé. ☹️ if you are using an acoustic with a pick up to the iPhone 13, you’ll need a usb to lightning connector for most irigs. The instrument needs to send the audio signal into the irig by a patch cable as the irig I use in this video doesn’t have a mic input. Doesn’t matter what you use iPhone, iPad, or MacBook as long as you have the proper connection from the irig to the device. The process in the video will work regardless of what instrument you use but for acoustic instruments without a 1/4 inch jack for a patch cable, you would need some sort of mic to pick up the sound, which doesn’t work with the irig in the video. In that case you would get an irig mic instead to capture acoustic performances. Honestly by that point I would say pick up a real usb interface like a focusrite scarlet solo or 2i2 if you plan on using the MacBook. Irig isn’t really designed to use with computers and a usb interface will give you more options for the instruments you have.

Hi! I’m new to your channel (subscribed today). I’m quite new to using iPad for making music too. I have the 11.9 inch iPad Pro M1 I’m a bit confused about guitar to iPad connectivity though… using that irig, it seems as though the signal chain is going: analogue (guitar) to digital (irig) to analogue (irig output) to digital (ipad input)….. Surely in 2022 there must be a way to go analogue (guitar output) to digital ( ipad input) without all the extra steps & conversions? I’m looking for such an adapter that accepts a 1/4 inch guitar cable and converts it into digital for plugging into iPad either through USB C or USB A (via a hub). Does such a thing exist or is this multiple conversion essential?

That is what is happening but it’s all done in the one device (irig here) it’s not an issue until the latency is too much. But it’s not here on iOS devices. Any interface you use is taking analog and converting it to digital to go into the software. The process is reversed in the way back out to speakers or headphones.
