Jocko, these podcasts have changed my life. I started training muay thai and boxing 10 years ago when I was 17 and have fallen back in love with it since listening to the podcast. I'm now training 7 days a week with early morning strength and conditioning throughout the week. I have also moved out of my parents house, enlisted in the Canadian Forces, have a career bought my own house and have my own garage gym. This podcast has influenced me to get after it! Thank you Echo Charles and Jocko, and we love the podcast from Canadian Forces Infantry

"Fear is your perception of an unknown threshold. The more unknowns you think you have the greater your perceived fear. Notice the use of the word "perceived". It's what you think you know projected onto the outside world. You don't know what's gonna happen a year from now, 3 months from now, a week from now, even a second. Stop pretending you know what's gonna happen and start focusing on what you have to get down right now. That's what's gonna make the biggest difference.." ~ Richard Machowicz

I will like how he talks about exposure therapy without ever saying that term. There’s a lot of people on KZbin that use the psychology jargon and explain what to do, but Jocko has lived it and brings a different perspective to all these topics! Love it! Keep it up!

I had fear of working at the post office and taking on the responsibilities of a mailman but thanks to Jocko I have overcome them. It has basically turn out to be all in my head the fear and worries of not getting the job done, or not learning the job fast enough was all mental and I was basically killing myself to the point where I quit without trying, but I got another chance and I am just grinding and being the best I can.
@littleripper3122 жыл бұрын
I love how Jocko understands that people are different and how he might be able to just do something but his daughter needed a much more gradual and gentle approach. Too often we project ourselves onto others and maybe one person might face this fear by just going on stage and facing it all at once but others might need baby steps.
@SaraPomerance5 жыл бұрын
One of the most powerful ways to go about this is to force yourself to do the things you find absolutely disgusting. Exposure therapy, as profoundly uncomfortable as it gets, chosen. Again and again till you can’t think of anything possibly more uncomfortable. This can also be done with freezing cold endless workouts and other but being absolutely disgusted on your body is most potent in my experience. It really, really works.

This is true, i have lived with a psychological condition called panic disorder for over 20 years, and i can say from experience that desentization - as this kind of therapy is called in psychology - does indeed work. However, it is necessary to first identify the following factors in evaluating whether desentization therapy is an effective treatment option for the individual in question. 1) Causality conditions of the fear. 2) The intensity of the fear experienced under the causality conditions. And, has the patient developed avoidant personality disorder, or in laymans terms: avoidance behaviour as a result of the fear. 3) How often the patient is exposed to the causality conditions. 4) How long has the patient been exposed to and suffered from fear under those conditions. If desentization therapy is used, it is also important to find the sweet spot in regards to frequency and intensity of stimuli. Too strong stimuli and/or exposing patient to stimuli too frequently will cause patient's condition to worsen, too little stimuli and/or too infrequent exposure to said stimuli will also cause the therapy to be ineffective.

Went a couple of times to sparring ,each time got my butt kicked without landing a good shot. People said you're doing fine, but I honestly did not believe it. Today I had opportunity to spar again, but I have some foot pain and used that as an excuse. Now, 2 hours later, I'm pretty pissed at myself. I've started living through a god damn screen instead of facing dangers in real life. I am way too comfortable and have no risk in my life, which significantly decreased my enthusiasm and sense of adventure. I want to become a man, a leader, I want to protect my friends and family if need be, but I can't even get over the fear of sparring or even approach a woman cause *there is a chance* of getting rejected. I believe I described what is torturing society today. We lose to our fears, get beaten down by them, but instead of getting up and fighting back like the warriors we were meant to be, we seek comfort in instant gratification like the internet. We've built a safe zone where exposure to fears is voluntary, but before it was a must. Eat or be eaten. Kill, or be killed.

Yes very good. What you are describing is systematic desensitization/graduated exposure. Make the first step an easy win. If you are really stuck you can get relaxed do some belly breathing and imagine doing the thing. Imagine it going well and imagine it going not so well but dealing with it, then imagine the next level. Then go do the first thing ASAP. It's used for phobias and PTSD as well.

Very cool story, I can relate to your daughter. I grew up with very little support and was alway fearful to talk in front of people. It’s sounds easy but is not, I still feel that pit in my stomach when I have to do it at 53 yo. I wish I had the support you gave your daughter when I was young. I can talk business all day long to people, when it comes to speaking in front of a crowd I just want to craw into a box. Very cool thanks for sharing.

I don’t really understand how Jocko or any of these guys (top military warriors) could go back to living civilian life after all that training/lifestyle... It seems like... if you’re Bree for war and combat, that’s what you are... and do.. That is your mindset, your body, your response, your physiology, your lifestyle and world.. It makes sense why the Spartans would have a warrior class which remained as such. I wonder if in ancient times, wartime was always, and now.. A constant theme.. threat, and way of life.. It would make sense.. For after a full conversion (to a warrior) there seems like there’s really no going back.. Your whole body-mind system being geared for that constant set of stressors and adapted for it... Any comments welcome...

Sounds like you are more worried about the fact that you cant control yourself and you cannot control your thoughts and emotions. Start with training yourself to control your thoughts and emotions. A good way to do this is working out. Push yourself. Set a small goal which is challenging and when those negative thoughts and emotions that say you cant do it pop up, destroy them with positive thought followed by positive action.
