The Roman Legion is one of the greatest fighting forces in history. Greatest reason for the Roman Empire's massive success.

First was the maniple system, next the marian reform, then we got the 3rd century crisis tactics, diocletian reforms, and lastly constantine's reform. Byzantine military innovations are for another time (cataphract strats too op).

Roman was extremely powerful and considered the strongest Western power because of its flexibility which allowed them to adapt to any situation. This point alone was the thing that the Ancient Chinese empire needed the most to uphold their long-lasting dynasty. These two strongest in the East and West focus on two completely different ideas of warfare and society progress. Rigidity and Flexibility.

The willingness to use, and lose, tens of thousands more soldiers than their enemies (or hundreds of thousands, during the 1st Punic War). The logistics to craft and assemble their equipment, specially the chainmail, also helped a lot (I think Bret Devereaux is writing a book on that particular subject). There were other factors, but those were fundamental. Next question?

You know, the city where I come from used to be called Remes in latin when under Roman governance. People have come up with the story that Remus somehow survived and founded the city in Northeastern Gaul, thus making it Rome's "sister". Today it's called Reims, and we still practice tortoise formation for protests mainly.

My favourite aspect of Roman history is the Fall of the Western Romans. More exactly how it's brightest flame was near the very end with Emperor Majorian! Betrayed by the devil himself, Ricimer. THis peroid was also among the last times the Eastern Empire deployed as much strength and resources to help the West.

@imgvillasrc1608
@imgvillasrc1608 4 ай бұрын
Rome never surrendered even at the very end. It's corrupt politicians sold them out. Heck, the Roman Catholic Church were the ones who did their best to keep Roman society from getting totally purged from the barbarians. Then centuries after the fall of the Western Empire, it was revived again as the Holy Roman Empire. One could argue that it was not the Roman Empire of old, but that the fact that the descendants of the Gauls and Germans had so much nostalgia for Rome to the point that they recreated the old Rome in their way showes how influentially powerful Roman culture was. When your enemies start loving you so much that their children start following your footsteps rather than their ancestors, you know you achieved something incredible. Rome is not only a place, it's a culture.
