The New Model Army was hardcore. One of the first modern professional armies, they actually fought in Europe during the Anglo-Spanish (otherwise known as the Franco-Spanish) War on the side of France. fun fact the war of the three kingdoms and by extension the English civil, come out of the Scottish civil war, and if you want to trace it to one event although that's always reductive, you could trace it to a lady called jenny geddes who threw a chair at a priest when he tried to do mass at saint Gillies in Edinburgh, leading to rioting and civil war, the Scottish protestant covenants eventually invading England and triggering its crisis.

One of the funny parts of the war is that when royalist cavalry units defeated a unit, they pursued them to the ends of f...nowhere (thus ending their involvement with the main battle) while parlamentary cavalry most of the time returned to the battlefield (behind enemy lines) after they make sure the defeated unit won't come back. Discipline and situational awareness is very important in the field.

As a French, I must say, the "establishing a Republic 140 years before France" hits hard. In fact, many French intellectuals were great fans of the British monarchy and wanted it in France (with the king and them at the top, of course). We actually had our own constitutionnal monarchy, for a short period (1789-1792). Which makes the Republic "an accident" of history. As usual, in France's history, I would say. Oliver Cromwell: I’m gonna overthrow the monarchy as God has shown me he dislikes them Also Cromwell: I will be made Lord Protector, a title inheritable after I die, I will be proclaimed so in Westminster on the throne, and it will have more considerable power in statutory law than the preceding Stuart dynasty ever had

Cromwell executed the first socialists, The Levellers. The English Civil War served as one of the only “modern” revolutions, that being the removal of older forms of authority with a new, in a manner that was more conservative than the previous regime. He was a right wing modernist.

Meanwhile in Virginia, my tenth-or-so-great-grandparents have about left Scotland and are probably having their own little conflict in Virginia trying to establish their own independent homesteads further inland like they tried in Ireland but finding opposition from both the Powhatans and older, wealthier English settlers and it’s going to really go off in a few more decades. Bacon’s Rebellion would be an interesting video topic.

its crazy because this was literally round the point where close-quarters combat was no longer favourable, and the musket was starting to be employed more often than not. the only reason why pikemen still existed was because someone needed to protect the musketeers, and THAT was not until the earliest use of it's date, 1647, by a french artillery regiment who put blades into the barrels, making them useless once you put them in.

I seriously suggest you look into the Argentine civil wars. Especially when the British and the French got involved in them to "protect their commercial interests". The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado is ridiculous. And there was this general (and governor) called Facundo Quiroga that said his horse was a magician, and he would often be seen talking to it before a battle to make sure all the plans were going to work. Oh, and his battle banner looked like that of a caribbean pirate.
