I don’t know wha happened. The last 3 years I was able to use my Sony tv remote for both the tv and Apple box. This week the Apple box will only acknowledge the Apple remote and not the Sony remote. I can use the Sony remote for everything except for the Apple box?

You have to connect your Apple TV with an Ethernet before you do this then😊hope this helps

Every IR romete will work. If it's not IR, it will not work.

@@theoflex4255 nope! I tried a few remotes and they still did not work. Not even with an update, suck-fully my TV ate it and I bought a new one and it immediately added the controller.

1. Your not pointing the Apple TV correctly. 2. Your battery are to low. 3. Your remote is not IR

If you learn these codes to another IR remote will they do the same functions as the new Apple remote? For example can you long press the "menu/home" button to bring up the new side menu?

I think that those side fuction of holding can't be learned this way. However if you talk about a smart remote like the Logitech Harmony, yes that would totally work.
