How To Control Netflix And Amazon Prime Video With Alexa

Ever wanted to know how to control Netflix with Alexa? If you're running an Android set top box, an Nvidia shield TV, or Android TV then this video will show you how to control Netflix, Amazon Video, KZbin, and any other media application with your Amazon Echo. You will be able to launch apks using Alexa and navigate their menus using your voice.
This Tutorial will also enable you to control a smart TV and other non Android based devices for navigation.
In order to control an Nvidia shield TV or other bluetooth enabled set top box you will need a Harmony Hub rather than a Broadlink RM pro but the instructions are essentially the same. See further down for the products I recommend for this project

To do this with Harmony Hub you need to follow the below steps to make the navigation available to Alexa. Thanks to Pcwizard7 for the instructions: Step 1. Login to the Harmony app on your PC and select your Harmony hub Step 2. Select devices tab Step 3. Select a device and click change device settings Step 4. Change power settings for all devices so the shield doesn't turn off when switching activities Step 5. Create an activity for for each command (up, down left right, select). If you want to go up 2 then create a command that goes up 2 with a delay in between. ik you asked it a year ago, but I know the answer. You can't. Okay that would suck if I didn't explained so basically, Broadlink can send IR radiation that imitates the IR radiation your remote control sends. That's why it can only use remote control functions. Because it actually can't get ANY data from the Netflix itself. Netflix's API is super poor, and since a few years, only a few chosen companies get access to it. That's why it works as it works, it's just not supported in any way by Netflix and it's a SHAME.

@@antonyhenson8969 you need a broadlink device RF controller but your TV remote must have app buttons like Netflix, KZbin etc. If your TV remote has the direct buttons for app then you'll be fine to launch those apps. On my Panasonic TV I was able to launch Netflix, KZbin and I had a customisable button which I used for Amazon video.

I actually filmed it months ago but then Broadlink cocked up in the EU and I had to hold off doing it. That's why my beard is magically back!! hahaha. Thanks. Useful info, though I don't have all those devices. I bought a Samsung (4200) smart TV 2 years ago. Alex can see the Smart TV via the Samsung SmartThings app, but I can only launch video apps (Prime, NetFlix, Hulu) via the older model Roku with Alexa. It's half-assed, but it works.

Follow every step in the video and scanning devices does not find anything. Android TV box is on the same network. Alberto Sonorus's skill is enabled and linked to my account. Alberto Sonorus on Android TV box has apps selected and checked. Even tried to disable and reenable skill on the account and rescan still nothing.

Hey dude. I recommend the Broadlink RM pro, UNLESS you have bluetooth remotes that you want to mimic. The Broadlink can only send Infrared to TV's and AV equipment, whereas the Harmony can do Bluetooth as well. The reason I don't recommend the Harmony normally is because it is far more expensive and also it's more difficult to achieve things like I've done in the video because of the way Logitech lock you into their way of working.

This is brilliant for me, due to me having a disability and not being able to use a remote. I'm just having a few issues. I have the recommended Yagala box and the broadlink. Aberto Sonoros is installed on alexa and the box. I added netflix to the sonoros app but alexa cannot find the device.

I'm am now completely converted to firesticks. So I won't be able to get this to work due to infra red. If you ever come up with a work around can you let me know. I have just bought the fire stick 4k (still sat in the box) which does have infra red sender for power off tv and volume. I wonder if the arrows and select also send via infra red.

Holy crap, this looks exactly like when I was setting up MythTV on Linux to do this like 10 years ago. You'd think things had progressed a bit. At least the voice recognition on Alexa is pretty good, so there is that, massive improvement from what passes as voice recognition on Windows. You can get Netflix voice recognition on Windows by the way, but after playing with that for about ten minutes I wanted to kill myself. I have a high end omnidirectional microphone and everything but it made me feel like I was back in 1993. Google understands me, Alexa understands me, why can't Windows?

Paul, You are able to eliminate the need for the Aberto app once you receive your Flirc. I use the Flirc + Alexa + Broadlink RM Pro + Button Mapper on my mibox. With the button mapper app, you're able to launch apps (as well as do other things) with the press of a button. Flirc can capture IR signals just like the broadlink pro as I'm sure you're aware. So you basically assign a useless button on your remote (or a remote you don't use) to open up an app on your box with button mapper. After you've assigned the button to Flirc, capture it with the broadlink pro, and then assign the button to button mapper for you're preferred app. Then do your normal routines as you would with broadlink. Edit: Also, Flirc works with Fire TV for those who are wondering (or at least it did when I tried it about a year ago.)

@@paulhibbert Not a problem! Button Mapper is great for those with security concerns over the Aberto app, plus it opens up the possibility for more automations when used with a Flirc. By the way, are you able to use follow up mode with routines? In the U.S., when you ask Alex to perform a routine, Alexa doesn't wait for another command which means I can't send directional commands one after another. That's the only thing keeping me from a completely "remoteless" experience unfortunately.

Hey dude. I can answer that! I too loved Demolition man and all my lights used to use the keywords "Illuminate" and "deluminate" long before Alexa even existed. I had it programmed in to Vox Commando, which is awesome Windows based software. I think I managed to get her to listen to the word if I spelled it out in a routine as "Dee Loom Enate" or something like that, but even though it worked she would constantly fail to hear it so I gave up on that one. For Play and Pause I have in the past used "bounce" and then then skip forwards and skip backwards were "bounce forwards" and "bounce backwards". Not sure if "stop playback" and "resume playback" are allowed by Alexa? -P

Hey Paul, please help I cannot delete the actual shield device after linking it through the alberto sonorous app and skill. The apps like netflix and youtube deleted easily but the actual shield will not delete from the Alexa app? I have deleted the device account within alberto sonorous on the shield disabled the skill and still the device will not delete on the Alexa app? I even removed the permission from my amazon account nothing is working? I assume there is a registry file either on my shield or online somewhere do you know if this is the case or do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I have been stuck on this for well over 3 days now.

Hey dude, if there is an entry somewhere triggering the shield itself to keep getting rediscovered it's probably at Nvidia's end. Another viewer had a similar issue with Hue devices reappearing despite them being deleted from the Alexa app, and from the Hue app, and the skill being disabled. He had to log on to a Philips portal to get rid of them. Before you start down that path with Nvidia though try deleting them from here: www.amazon.co.uk/hz/mycd/myx#/home/devices/1

Hi, Paul! I am laughing a lot watching your presentations and this is a godd thing, I must say, because life sucks already and anything keeps us smiliing should be cherrished. But, about all this control your tv with your voice/alexa/google whatever... It strongly reminds me the first time logitech harmony remotes took the market by storm, years ago. We were enthusiastic, and I must say again, it was much easier to set up macro comands for the -not-s0smart-home by nowadays standards. And guess what, mate. After that smart remote tsunami passed, everyone went back quietly to the old habits, The smart remote got forgoten in a drawer somewhere and the coffee table got piled up - again - with the usual plethora of device dedicated remotes. More than that, companies kill us slowly with so called smart remotes, Samsung does it, LG does it and so on. They are smart indeed, when talking to their own kind, by no mean, not a word to the competition's. This all talk-to-your-devices will settle down in a while, I am sure, its way too complicate, and we will do again the old find-that-damn-remote-for-me-woman dance.... Just wait.

i have all this working without any "bridge" app,i have a broadlink and use netflix on smarttv and kodi on computer connect to the tv, but have a flirc device mapped to my tv remote, so it controls tv and computer with the same remote, therefore theres no need for the app itself,just alexa routines, aldo i have to say its very slow to naviagte and select media by alexa, not the best integration

I subscribe to your channel and have garnered quite a lot of useful information from your videos. But Paul, when it comes to voice control for volume and directional buttons, isn't it just easier, faster, and more convenient to press the remote button?

I personally prefer to browse my media collection with a remote because I have an nvidia shield and the remote is really cool, but for a lot of people this is just another thing to add to their existing Alexa repertoire. For example by using Aberto Sonorus like I did in the video they could add it to an existing "Movie time" routine where the lights go off, the volume goes up, the shades come down and now Netflix is loaded! :)

hello paul I got my scene setup and routines setup. the voice commands will turn on my devices but it will not turn it off by voice command. But it will turn it off by play routine, any suggestions or fixes??

ok...so I got the menu commands running thanks to your video but I did notice you managed to move a number of menu steps at a time, I can only do one. how did you do that?

You can now skype call alexa in uk not sure if US bot mibile and internet calls but i think you need skype credits not to sure how it works

I think I figured out a way for iPhone owners to make this work. My plan is to buy all the equipment you listed, pull out an old android phone I don't use anymore (or someone can borrow their friends for 10 minutes) sign into my Alexa amazon account and create all the necessary scenes to let Alexa talk to my black bean device as well as do the tech work with the android specific app you mentioned. Then, theoretically, I could throw the android back in my closet for good and Alexa should still be able to conduct any thing I previously set up, right? I'm about to purchase and can let you know how it goes. If you know it won't work a quick reply would be great. Great video btw! Much love and I subscribed

Thanks man, you could install Aberto Sonorus to get apps to launch, but the navigation couldn't be done with the RM pro because the firestick isn't IR, but I think Alexa can control the firestick natively anyway so it's something I need to investigate further in the new year :)

@paul hibbert paul Hibbert I have a 2019 Qled, with the small silver control which has a dedicated netflix button, I also have a Amazon fire tv and a echo plus 2, what are my options for a control free tv experience, Alexa can open netflix via fire tv, but any search etc via alexa shows all fire tv content and cannot search in netflix specifically. I'd prefer to do everything inside fire tv because, if I open youtube app on the tv, alexa then cannot open fire tv in any shape or form the tv stays on its native youtube app. Thank you.

Blast, I was happily following along until my brain kicked in and I relaised my Nvidia Shield has a bluetooth remote not IR. :( But because my Shield is stuck to the rear of my TV I can't use a USB IR dongle. :(

This is probably your only choice I'm afraid dude... kzbin.info/www/bejne/moCYo3iujJJqf5o By doing this you will be "moving to the US", this means that the next time you open Alexa's app you will see your US profile which is an empty clean slate, you have to add the skills and devices from scratch *BUT*, your UK profile stays intact, if you want to go back to your old skills and devices you can just switch back to your UK profile by following the end part of the video. This will unfortunately remove any of the benefits of having a US based Alexa because you have now moved back to the UK. The only issues I have found with "moving" to the US is your Amazon Music doesn't work, and your Kindle book store doesn't work. It is only broken whilst you are in your US profile, so don't panic! Spotify DOES work, so if you are a spotify user then this could be the perfect solution.
