Thanks for the video! My son just got a ‘66 CJ5 for his first car, and we’re looking to do this for a huge safety upgrade.

Congratulations on the CJ! I highly recommend creating an account on jeepforum.com. It is a great group of Jeep owners, and you can ask questions, answer questions, and search through hundreds of thousands of previously asked/answered questions. It as an outstanding community and resource. I’m glad you found the video helpful! I hope it gives you some ideas to get started!

Thanks for this video. Exactly what I'm planning for my next project. What can you tell about those seats. Did you have to modify the brackets or other problems? Do you have a video on the seat install? Thanks alot.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Жыл бұрын
I put them in many years ago. They are just the generic poly racing seats from Jegs or Summit Racing. I used to factory seat brackets, but had to add some bars on top to adapt to the holes in the bottom of the new seats.
@staffordsanpei7804 Жыл бұрын
got the seats with cover installed. No big deal getting um in. They're sweet. Next project, 3 point harness. Probably in the summer when I can remove the soft top.

good job there young man ,,,i have a dune buggy that can use an upgrade on belts , my seats are lower then yours almost to the floor maybe 3 inches approx , and my roll bar is little more behind the front seat then yours ! all i need is pep talk to go and do it LOL at 68 but it will come lol ,,,,been driving it for 16 years in the same small town never any issues suddenly i get pulled over for no shoulder belts visible but i have the lap belt so the cop seem to be fine with it ,,,,,thank you for posting this
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
It is definitely a worthwhile upgrade. That lap belt always made me nervous. It would be a bad day if me or my passenger smashed their face in the windshield, especially since it is preventable. You could also run a horizontal bar behind your seats and install four or five point harnesses. That is a pretty common upgrade. In my experience, they were a hassle to adjust all the time for different passengers, which is why I went with the retractable seatbelt. But no problem for the driver if the same person is always driving it

Very nice video, thanks. I like your extra front roll bar. Where did you get? What I like is it only has the two center bars And not the outer ones where you can hit your head.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial11 ай бұрын
I purchased the kit on eBay a couple years ago. It was pre-bent and mostly ready to go, but you had to cut a few pieces to final length and weld it together yourself. It included the two outer bars with grab handles, and I welded them in. But I cut them back out and trashed them because they were headbangers! www.ebay.com/itm/230963952397?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=YtR4-QhDTnq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=FaKt5-7WR56&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Thank you for the video, it was very helpful. I just purchased a 1965 CJ5 Willys Jeep. I'm not sure if it has attach point from the manufacture, because of the year and not needing seat belts for the year made. Any suggestions on placement for the front 3 point belts and for the rear seat? Thanks
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Жыл бұрын
They are indeed a little bit different. I would recommend trying to get a look at a later model with seatbelts, and measure and replicate the mounting points if it looks like it makes sense.
@nativerhythm1564 Жыл бұрын
Hi...Love the look of your CJ5! I also like the extra room you get with those Poly seats. Would you let me know which brand seat you used and whether you encountered any special issues installing them? My CJ5 (new to me) is a '79.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Жыл бұрын
I got them years ago. Pretty sure they are the generic Summit or Jegs seats. I would get the current updated design with two shoulder belt slots instead of one in the center in case you ever want to install 4 or 5 point harnesses. When installing them, I used the stock seat brackets. I just had to add a couple steel bars across the top to adapt to the mounting holes on the bottom of the new seats.

GREAT VIDEO! I am about to tackle this on my '64 CJ3b. Unrelated to seat belts, what is that center console you installed and where could I get one?
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the center console! Unfortunately, it is a one of a kind custom built. Plywood wrapped with black leather material. I have recently looked into similar steel locking center consoles. Tuffy makes the best ones for sure. Best quality and variety of sizes. Smittybilt also has some, but less of a variety. That’s what I know about center consoles!

Thanks for the helpful video. I have some 3 point belts coming in this week. On a separate note, I too have the poly racing seats for my 77 cj5 project and am wondering if you fabbed the mounting brackets to install onto the oem seat mounts. I’m having trouble getting a plan worked out and would like to use the existing mounts.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Glad you have 3 points on the way. It is a much needed safety upgrade. For the seat mounting bracket’s, I used the stock mounting brackets, but modified the top. The existing thru mounting holes in the bracket did not line up with the tapped mounting holes in the bottom of the seat. I used steel angle and steel flat bar to make the transition, bolting the bars to the top of the seat bracket using the OEM seat mounting holes, then the racing seat to the steel bars using the racing seat holes. So I did have to bend and drill holes through the transition pieces to get everything lined up nice.

So are the seatbelts not attached/connected to the brakes??? 🤔
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Жыл бұрын
No seatbelts are attached to the brakes. All seatbelts have a self locking mechanism that is triggered by a rapid movement.

Do you actually have to add the tube into the roll bar or could I just put the bolt thru it without welding a tube thru it first?
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, welding in the tube (or preferably the purchased bung) is required. Otherwise, it will compromise the structural integrity of the roll bar. It could, bend, buckle, the seat belt bolt could pull through, …. Definitely don’t just drill a hole through the roll bar. Great question! I should have addressed that specifically in the video! Thanks for asking!

@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial i was wondering the samething ,,,,so in short somekind of a sleeve is better ? thanks again
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@MrGarcon98 A sleeve through the rollbar? Absolutely. Without the sleeve fully welded in on both sides the structural integrity of the role bar is compromised because it’s missing material. It can crush or fold in that location.
