That sounds really good, Westbound! Lobster mushrooms are so versatile in how we can cook and enjoy them. I'm glad Lobster mushroom season is starting up again here in western Oregon. Hope you have a great mushroom season yourself!

With wild mushrooms - and most wild plants, too -- I like their flavor to come through. And simple works good for that, most times. And it's easier cooking, too, lol. Thanks for watching and commenting, too! :D

Looks so yummy! Another good one! I wonder if I can grow in backyard undrr the Oaks with other mushrooms I intend to grow. I have some wild ones already there but haven't Identified them yet so holding back. Can't wait to have my favorite mushroom recipes!
@HaphazardHomestead6 жыл бұрын
You're more likely to find these Lobster mushrooms with conifers instead of oaks. The underlying mushroom (Russula brevipes) has a close connection to conifer roots. In eastern North America, the parasite (Hypomyces lactifluorum) is also known from another mushroom, Lactarius piperatus. That Lactarius connects with the roots of hickories and oaks, but it's not as common as the Russula brevipes in the conifers. So there's a chance - if you can get the Lactarius piperatus started in your backyard. Oaks have so many great mushrooms that connect with them! So you are in a good spot to enjoy mushrooms of one kind or another -- even just to look at them, if they turn out to not be edible ones.

Just be carefull for the twins of the shrooms- best to download a guide that describes em before going out, and stick to it.( None on the list) Wiki for forest habitats, and sites for the additional info !

I hope you can find some Lobster mushrooms out in the woods and try them yourself, Troy. You may see some in grocery stores that carry wild mushrooms, too. They might be expensive, but it's a good way to get to know a mushroom.

thats amazing. i never see any cool mushrooms where i live. Around here, ppl get excited if they find a puffball..which..ive never found..so i am certainly jealous of your finds!
@HaphazardHomestead6 жыл бұрын
I get excited when I see a puffball, too, lol. The Pacific Northwest is an amazing place for mushrooms, for sure! I've got one kind that shows up in my yard that tastes like Sweet Corn! These Lobster mushrooms are in your neck of the woods, in the northeast US and southeast Canada. Maybe you will see one someday -- and a puffball, too! :D

My parents have some wild American Chestnuts (Castanea dentata) that give them a lot of nuts, most years. I'll ask them to bring some for Thanksgiving - yum! Too bad you don't have Lobster mushrooms in your region. They are so productive, good to eat, and reliable every year. And easy to identify. I'll have some other videos with mushrooms that you might have, so stay tuned. There are so many wonderful wild edible mushrooms!
@StalkeraBg6 жыл бұрын
Haphazard Homestead Chestnuts are dirt cheap now lol.. 2.Something $ or £ I know of a freelance forest, but its easier to buy em.(its like gathering from needles box inside out) As for shrooms.. its 50/50 as all have very deadly copies, around 12 awesome shrooms, but atleast 10 copies can kill and nothing helps :/
@HaphazardHomestead6 жыл бұрын
You have that right about those prickly chestnut hulls, lol! They can be intimidating -- and painful! :O And you have pointed out the #3 reason to really get to know how to identify mushrooms well! At least even the deadly ones are fascinating!

Haphazard Homestead Did a search.. We have amanita cesarea, wood blewit,calvatia gigantea, grevilles bollete, sweet tooth, chestnut bollete and others that i could find easily around. (Bonus to living below a mountain with 4-5 layers of forests) But ofc, my Prize would be a golden chanterelle with Butter and Lime.
@HaphazardHomestead6 жыл бұрын
That's a nice list - and definitely a bonus of forested mountains! :D We share some of the same mushrooms, so you may see one you recognize sometime on my channel. And the next batch of chanterelles I find, I'm going to try them with butter and lime! Thanks!
@lorraineblass98755 жыл бұрын
I like them fried up crisp. I sometimes add a tiny amount of garlic, but not too much or you lose the delicious flavor of the lobster mushroom itself

So I guess I can say "Hey, neighbor!" It's nice to get a comment from someone in western Oregon. There are so many great mushrooms around here. But there would be more if we got our usual rains this fall. That's an interesting idea for going on a mushroom foray with other folks from our area. Since I don't have the KZbin Community tab yet, I'll have to think of some other way to connect with people that might want to go foraging or mushroom hunting sometime. You've got me thinking! In the meantime, we can hope for more rain -- for more mushrooms! Thanks for commenting, Frank Hartigan!

Lobster mushrooms are one of the most versatile wild edible mushrooms I know. They can have such a different character, even without a lot of ingredients, just depending on how they are cooked. Veggie lobster bacon is pretty doggone good! :D
