I like to turn on Saute and put a little oil or butter into and toast the rice a little before I add the water and pressure cook. It adds an extra depth of flavor that is so delicious. Thanks for the informative video! :)

I've never heard of this before! How long do you sauté the rice for? I mean, does it change color, like "toast" it, like you said? I'll have to try this in the instant pot!
@vittoriabakes
@vittoriabakes 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicot9305 I just turn it on Sauté - More, and when it's hot add a little oil and butter to the bottom. Then throw in my rice (even freshly rinsed, just takes a little longer) and saute it. It's best to do it with brown rice but it can be done with white. You'll start to smell a nutty fragrance after about 5-6 minutes and the golden color on the brown rice will deepen a little. Brown Basmati is a really tasty one to do this with, as it just intensifies the nutty flavor even more. Brown jasmine turns out super tasty as well.

I bought a dedicated rice cooker. It turned all my efforts to risotto/sticky/mushy. I've NEVER cooked mushy rice in the pot on the stove way. So I'm really interested in the Instant Pot method for rice, because...I don't want to baby sit food. :-) My next kitchen gadget is the Instant Pot (which slightly terrifies me because pressure cookers looked dangerous before I saw this type). Thank you for this video. Much appreciated.

Great information. I must say, in my experience red rice needs 2 measures of water for every 1 measure of rice and one hour of cooking on high pressure, I tried cooking it exactly the way it's explained in this video but had no luck. I understand red rice must be a bit sticky and chewer than most rice varieties. After cooking it for one hour the rice acquires a similar texture to that of sushi rice but in my opinion better. 😉

@@Greenhealthycooking How can cooking time not change? You trying to heat up a triple amount of water and rice.
@Greenhealthycooking
@Greenhealthycooking 4 жыл бұрын
@@omaha88888 because the pot simply needs triple the time to "get to pressure" so it automatically takes longer before the pressure cooking time starts. That's why you don't have to add any extra time yourself. The more volume is in the post, the longer it takes to get to pressure and to depressurize. Which is why natural pressure release is so important.

¡Mi héroe! Hello, Lorena! Today, I accidently found my birthday present while I was searching for something else in our garage (DH had taken it out of the box and I could see its shiny exterior). I found a pressure cooker with a brain. It had a manual, but no cookbook. Onto KZbin I went. There you were and your perfectly staged bowls of different rice. And there you were and your excellent explanation about rice cooking in one of these gadgets. Your explanation made so much sense: it's not the amount of water; it's all about the evaporation! I love the way you organized your video - you should advise others. I wanted to know how to cook rice. I had thought I had to take a guess as to the amount of water for my short grain brown rice. You went above and beyond to reveal recipes for cooking a variety of rices. And thanks for time-marking where I would find what I needed. Awesome video. The rice I've always made always came out overcooked and mushy. That was using the instant pot pre-set setting for Rice. However your method has now allowed me to master perfect long grain rice that is no longer mushy. Thanks! Your 1:1 ratio and 3 minute time is perfect. I used to use 2:1 ratio and 10 minutes on the cooking setting, and it just never came out.

Thanks for the info. I cook short white rice for 6min & short brown rice for 24min. It really depends upon how you like your rice - you can go up or down a minute 🙂

My concern with constantly putting the valve in the ceiling position is that with all that steam going up there, I'll eventually have to replace the drywall. But seriously, owing to uncertainty about rinse / don't rinse with my Jasmine rice, plus too much sticking going on, I went back to stove top method. But now, this video inspires me to try it her way. Hope it works.

What do you know, the Jasmine rice came out just right. Good-bye stove top method. So thanks for rehabbing the Instant Pot rice for me, and also for the 'remove immediately to avoid sticking' tip. Looking forward to watching some of your other vids.

@@DownNeptune I have heard from reliable sources on both sides of the great Rice Rinsing Debate. This short video explains that rinsing is not "necessary" but will likely affect how sticky your cooked rice turns out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naSof4mDfa1mgbM

Thank you for a straight forward “idiot proof” video on IP rice cooking!! I was ready to give away my IP because I could not get rice to cook properly! I needed specifics on how to actually USE the IP! People in videos I’ve watched assume you have a full grasp of how to use the IP! You have a new subscriber!👏🏻

Always trust my written recipes. I have to recite all my instructions by heart when I make videos because I want to look into the camera and talk to you and not read from a piece of paper. I mess up a lot in my videos. Ugh. Sorry.

Absolutely great video--I agree with everyone's comments about your efficiency and clarity. I lived in SE Asia for some years. We always, always, always washed the rice. Just rinse til the water is clear and be sure you pour off all the water before you add the cooking water. The rice 'dust' gives a 'dusty' taste, in my opinion. Takes less than 30 seconds to add this step in.

I address this in the blog post. Most rice sold in North America is commercially washed before being packaged. The good thing is that my cooking method works with both washed and dry rice.

Many thanks for the video, i have just tried this method, on long grain rice, it worked surprisingly well, but caught very slightly on the bottom of the pot But i did forget to wash the rice beforehand, and not get the sealing correct for a couple of minutes But many thanks for the effort making the video 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
