How To Cook The Best Oatmeal Ever Using Milk!
Using milk to cook oatmeal is probably not as common as cooking oatmeal with water, but it sure is a tasty alternative. I normally cook oatmeal with water as it is my preference, but I did get a lot of questions regarding the use of milk to cook oatmeal with, that's why I decided to make this video. For those of you who have questions about how to cooking oatmeal with milk, my hope is that this video will answer those questions.
Basically, how to cook oatmeal with milk is pretty much the same way as how to cook oatmeal with water with one critical difference: the way you must keep mixing the oatmeal as you cook it with milk as not to burn the base of the pot and in turn give the oatmeal a burnt taste. Cooking oatmeal with milk does give the oatmeal a different taste and a different texture. None the less, cooking oatmeal with milk is a nice healthy alternative to have for breakfast.
Ingredients:
Quaker Old Fashion Oatmeal: 3/4 cup.
Milk: 1 1/2 cup of milk (you can use whole milk or fat free milk)
(Optional) Cinnamon, raisins, etc.
As with water, when cooking oatmeal with milk, add the milk to a medium size pot and let it boil on high heat. When milk is boiling, add the oatmeal, stir it, and lower the heat to medium. Continue to stir the oatmeal until the desired consistency or when you can see a good portion of the bottom of the pot. Put it in a bowl and you are ready to enjoy the best oatmeal ever! At this point, it is your option to add whatever toppings you like to enjoy with your oatmeal. I added cinnamon and raisins which I find adds a nice balance to the oatmeal cooked with milk.
My hope is that this video is helpful for those of you who have questions about cooking oatmeal with milk, and if not please ask me in the comments below.

One half whole milk, one half water still gives enough milk taste and goo texture. Cheaper and less likely to overflow. Some milk is definitely needed, or it tastes like hospital food. To avoid washing too many dishes, I cook at least two cups of oat flakes and eat cold leftovers. No need to measure in quarters. All kinds of porridge are improved with milk and butter. : )

1:27 Every time I try to boil milk, it burns before it boils, and ruins the whole pot. My first attempt, I tried it on HI, like you said, and it burned almost immediately, but still took several minutes to boil after that. My second attempt, I tried it on MED, and after 20 minutes, I smelled the burning, but it still wasn't boiling. After a total of 30 minutes, it was only up to a half-boil, but it was too late. The burning had already ruined it. Any advice?
@PauloMachadoPumpkins
@PauloMachadoPumpkins 4 жыл бұрын
You can’t cook on high. Once the milk starts to boil, add the oatmeal and immediately lower the heat to low. Keep stirring until done. Don’t allow it to sit still for any amount of time. That’s how you burn the oatmeal. The other tip I would give would be to change the pot you’re using. Sometimes different pots heat up differently and causes that to happen as well. Most importantly, though, no matter how you do it, you’re going to have to be creative because of that very reason. Milk just has the propensity to burn.
@agiar2000
@agiar2000 4 жыл бұрын
@@PauloMachadoPumpkins Thanks so much for the reply! Just to be clear, the milk was burning on "MED" _before_ it ever boiled, which was _before_ I added any oats. That said, I wasn't stirring it while waiting for the milk to boil. Next time, I will try starting the heat halfway between "LO" and "MED" and I will stir constantly. I don't know if it will ever boil at that temperature, so I think I will just go ahead and add the oats at the beginning so that they can get a head start soaking up the milk.
@agiar2000

UPDATE! Attempt 3: 1. Based on some advice I got from an Indian KZbin video, I pre-soaked my pan in cold water for 15 minutes, drained it, and then put in roughly 20 mL of water in the pan. 2. Based on some advice I got from Reddit, I put the quart of skim milk and the cup of steel cut oats together cold in the pan, and I turned the burner up to the mark halfway between "LO" and "MED". 3. I stirred constantly with a large wooden spoon for 2½ hours. 4. VICTORY. I can say without qualification that these were the greatest oats I had ever eaten. At no point was any part of the dish burned, and it was so creamy and delicious! Retrospect: I suspect that stirring while heating was important to prevent the milk from burning. I know that some people online have been able to cook oats with milk more quickly than I have, but I have not been able to replicate their results. Looking forward: Standing and stirring for 2½ hours was a bit tiresome, so I probably won't be making oats like this again, but I am glad that it is finally done, and I still have a couple of servings left in the refrigerator. I have no further guesses for how I might attempt to replicate the results of those online and who wrote the instructions on the box who have been able to cook the oats in milk so much faster than this, so I think I will make the remaining steel cut oats with water in a slow cooker which, while not as tasty, is much easier.

@@purplerain5305 I'm not familiar enough with cookware to give a good answer, but I would say that it felt fairly substantial, held maybe two quarts, had a long handle on one side, was silver-colored around the circumference, and copper-colored around the bottom. It was the same pan I used when I succeeded.

I have a large teflon-coated saucier , 3-quart size, that I've used for years for making fudge and for cooking oatmeal. A half-gallon of milk and 3 1/2 handfuls of old-fashioned rolled oats stirred into it. After bringing the milk to a boil, I turn the heat way down and continue cooking, stirring it every 15 minutes. I prefer the oatmeal to be very, very thoroughly cooked and soft. 1 1/2 cup raisins - golden raisins, but ordinary ones are almost equally good. Let stand to cool; the raisins will plump up to grape size. Since getting an Instant Pot I've made oatmeal in it twice, using the slow-cooker function. It does an excellent job, but it takes four hours or more..

@PauloMachadoPumpkins

Can you prep a batch of this in advance and reheat later?
@paulomachadophotography3293
@paulomachadophotography3293 7 жыл бұрын
You can, but I would not recommend it. It won't taste nor have the same texture is one reason. The other reason is that if you are giving oatmeal a chance you will give it up before you start. Now, if you already enjoy the taste of oatmeal and you just want to make it convenient for meal prepping ahead, then I can say yes. Just remember the first reason I mentioned above.
