In our home When we use steam boiled or puzhungal arisi , which we keep in a vessel inside a cooker , we allow one whistle in full flame and 10 min very sim/ low flame . Not a single grain will overflow from the vessel inside the cooker

Even today we have only vadicha saatham at our home.. my husband taught me an easy method to do it.. once the rice is fine in the pot, close the pot with its perfect fitting lid and use 4-5 nos of wooden or stainless steel cloth pegs to around the lid to hold the lid on place with the pot and remove the starch either in the in any vessel of you want to use the liquid starch or into the kitchen sink directly if you want to discard. Pls note that you should pour a little bit of cold water if you're discarding the starch in a stainless steel sink.. else the plastic pipe leaks

Excellent detailed instructions. Well done. Will try today. (First time I am hearing that we have to soak rice before cooking it.) Update: 1st attempt made on 6 Jul 20:; will give me 90/100. For the type of Ponni rice here in Singapore, I have to use 1:3 water. Will get 100/100 next time. Thanks for the detailed instructions you have given. Question: Why one recipe by another is asking us to add salt while soaking the Basmati rice? It tastes salty after cooking it!
