Hey, everyone! If you follow the MSI channel at all, you may have already seen this video - but I imagine most of you haven't. They wanted this one on both channels. Tomorrow, we'll walk you though a BIOS upgrade _without_ a CPU - handy especially for those building/upgrading Ryzen systems. Thanks for the continued support. Stay tuned!

I am currently waiting for thermal pads in the mail due to them not even putting enough of them on the card on the vram's... it is an awesome card with good specs, just the thermals are TERRIBLE~ ive also heard that they are releasing ones with fixed thermal pads, but i honestly think they should have done a recall on the ones that have this problem. Like mine, i bought it at best buy back in july and i got a bad one.

You can also do a bare metal backup/restore instead of reinstalling windows in its entirety. This is typically what's done in the enterprise space to deploy one system image with custom config, softwares, etc to multiple different systems and over upgrade cycles. It is a really fast way to get back up and running after a hardware upgrade.

@@MarkNOTW I had been using Aomei Backupper to maintain my Windows 10 installation across I think 4 or so hardware upgrades by now. Just a full system backup, followed by what Aomei calls a universal restore (bare metal restore). Addendum : It's probably a good idea to remove all (yes all) of the drives, except for the one you want to install w10 to. Just to be extra sure you can't (and won't) accidentally yeet the wrong drive and lose data unnecessarily. After windows installs, then plug the non-OS drives back in.

When I decided to 'become an artist' I needed a HUGE PC for my particular style. My old 4-core could not even open the program! And the machines I knew would work well were in the $6,000 range! I learned from you and your colleagues (Steve, Jay, Linus etc.) how to pick parts and assemble a machine. It took me six months to get the guts together and do it! But it was great and now I have TWO 5950x units on B550 Unify-X and x570 Aurus Master both with 64GB RAM and pushed by 750W and 850 PSU of Platinum BeQuiet and Titanium Seasonic Prime types running 24/7 processing my material. Been trying to find out what's the best way to upgrade my motherboard + CPU, but the Windows installation stuff really confuses me. It's the sole reason why I haven't made an SSD boot drive just for Windows yet. UPDATE EDIT: I finally installed the new motherboard and CPU, took me a bit to find out how to boot to the bootdrive that already had windows on it (with all of my other important stuff) which took a bit of configuring in BIOS that I had to learn about, and when I finally got in everything was fine until I got the dreaded "Activate Windows" watermark. Fortunately for me, all I had to do was go to my windows activation, try troubleshooting, and selecting "I have upgraded my hardware" or something along those lines. It was broken at first because Microsoft's servers were down but after a day I tried it again and it worked, now my Windows is activated and my PC is running as smoothly, if not better, than ever.

Usually the free Win 10 update from Win 7 tied the OS to your hardware. You can go to your Microsoft account and switch it to be tied to your account. Easy to upgrade the chipset drivers and a few other items. Windows 10 wanted a new CD Key to activate so I had one of the $9-ish USD Win 10 Pro Keys and that took care of the problem. I always reinstall windows if it's a platform upgrade. Heck, I reinstall windows every 6 months just to keep my rig running smoothly as I find it tends to slow down with use. I'd suggest keeping your OS on a separate disk from your software, games and documents. Better yet, have a disk dedicated to each. This helps prevent file loss in the event of your OS crapping out on you and saves you from the hassle of having to reinstall all of your games after a wipe.

@@xXA7XxGunslingerXx well to answer your question I would simply recommend DDU to remove your drivers. It’s fast and easy, and enables you to basically plug and play by doing everything for you to prepare for the upgrade. Once you’ve upgraded it’s just as simple as downloading the new drivers from your gpu manufacturer.

By description it technically should, but it would take the same amount of time reinstalling and setting up all apps anyway. I have not personally tried it, but wouldn't be surprised by any user profile or temporary file leftovers, which, if not causing conflicts, at least waste space.

tbh I personally just swapped out platforms (lmao AM3+ FX6300) to a new one (AM4 X470 R2700X) and Windows handled the swap just fine without reinstalling anything, the only hiccup was having to call Microsoft for them to reactivate Windows 10 again but that didnt take much time at all

@@poopsie117 I'd do the windows reinstall, as I keep all my data centrally stored on my NAS, so I wouldn't even have to back up anything. That's a good chunk of time for your main computer to be down.

Videos like these are just feeding my urge to upgrade right now, but I'm doing my damnedest to resist. As good as AMD's current CPUs are, I wanna wait for whatever comes after AM4 (fingers crossed that they give some great compatibility again). My current setup of a 1600AF and a 2070 in a custom loop (just for fun) on a 21:9 ultrawide isn't really hurting for performance quite yet.

I've built and upgraded many hundreds of systems, but I always like seeing how you simplify advice for a broad audience. Personally, if I'm doing a platform upgrade, I'll also upgrade the main storage drive and start fresh, but the old drive with the old OS goes into another case and becomes a backup/secondary machine. Far older stuff gets retired or less used, like my last high end XP machine, which is being used for gaming, for those things that just won't run on 7/10

Windows 10 is excellent at getting rid of the old drivers and installing the new ones for MB/CPU changes. Completely reinstalling Windows is usually unnecessary. Worst case scenario you find some orphan drivers in device manager and remove them, but I've never even seen that happen.
