you could also just change teh subdivision surface modidier can't you?

Yes you can, but using this method opens up more procedural options. I will be posting a new tutorial this week showing some of the advantages of using this method 💕

Don't use less subdivisions before baking because unlike marvelous designer which calculates the mass of the fabric by surface area blender uses vertex mass which leads to different results with every subdivision you add so when you're happy with the results divide the mass by 4 each time you subdivide
@bluebaconjake4052 жыл бұрын
I guess it really depends on the usage and situation. If its for fashion design then maybe you need more precise cloth simulations. But if the simulation is used for a single element in an animation then precision and accuracy might not be important
@Moove_Studio2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, never quite understood why blender uses mass per vertex vs. the more intuitive mass per surface calculation...
@RareAmv2 жыл бұрын
Maybe a stupid question, that only applies if subdivision is done before the cloth sim modifier correct?
@darrennew82112 жыл бұрын
@@RareAmv Yes. The cloth simulation is going to simulate cloth using whatever verts are in the mesh at that point in the modifier stack.

i see you have some good ideas in this video. i recommend you try pinning the active geometry node with the thumbpin icon its not object dfepend, also, if you already have a sphere as the reference point for pinning, you can consider in the geonode, using proximity or vertexposition & sphere position comparison to procedurally assigning vertex group weighht (by storename attribute)

That doesn't actually take it faster 😅. Is faster just because you used less subdivision + you can basically achieve the same result with a subdivision modifier before the cloth sim (no need for a geometric node setup).

I am relatively new to geometry nodes, but isn't there a way to modify the vertex group within the nodes? If so then wouldn't it be possible to use the icosphere (or any intersecting object[s]) to dynamically calculate the pin groups by boolean operations? The setup would be a bit more involved, but would then allow for driving cloth sims from rigid bodies. I think I am going to toy around with this for a shower curtain or something. Edit: (from my later comment) Using the new "Store Named Attribute" node in Blender 3.2.0 I was able to modify the vertex groups. It's a minorly convoluted process involving two separate mesh booleans (a difference and an intersect) and two merge operations (one to flatten the intersection and the other to properly merge the overlapping geometry after joining). Simply apply a value of 2 to the store named attribute node before the geometry join and it works! I used a value of 2 because it gets but in half on some vertices after the join. Going over 1 doesn't seem to affect the pin group so I used 2.
@AlienXtream12 жыл бұрын
geometry nodes gets a bit stouborn and unintuitive if you want to get some types of information out of it but for sure there should be a way to get it to behave, even if you have to mess around with some hacky things to do it. its much more oriented towrds bringing things in and jsut outputting a raw mesh
@lyrebird7122 жыл бұрын
@@AlienXtream1 I've found where I can *read* the vertex groups, but not dynamically *write* to them. That's rather frustrating, but I'm pretty sure it can be done via python. If it can be done then this might be a really cool plugin opportunity to just use some boolean helper shapes to dynamically drive cloth sims. Done properly it might even be compatible with non-native simulators. More research to do! lol

@palpytine2 жыл бұрын
Sure. In 3.1 you can send it to a group output then assign that to the vertex group in the geonodes property editor. In 3.2 you can use a "store named attribute" node. The subdivide operation will have interpolated weights for the newly created vertices, so you can also do a bit of maths to take any less-than-one interpolated value and set it to zero.

If it’s your natural voice, I’m so sorry-I don’t mean to say it’s bad, but I’m having a hard time focusing. Even with subtitles on, it’s not helping since KZbin’s automatic captions aren’t that great.
