Learn how to crochet this beautiful Spiked Sedge Stitch! Fully reversible and just a ONE ROW REPEAT it creates a gorgeous dense fabric - perfect for thick squishy blankets! This stitch works best if you use 2 colours so the pattern can really shine - in this video I show you step by step how to crochet the stitch, how to float the yarn up the sides AND how to finish the last row for a nice straight edge.
If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
🧶 Yarn & Hook information:

🔥 Frequently Asked Questions:
Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on KZbin yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthevideo.com/ and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyrobin.com The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website
How can I print the pattern from your website? Do you have downloadable PDF's? Not at this time no. This may change in the future but for now, I only provide the written pattern directly on my website.
Can you remake this video so it is slower? If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
Why do you use American stitch terminology? I learnt using USA stitch terms, long before I even knew there was a difference between UK & US terminology! American terms are my "first language" so to speak. If you need a conversion chart, I have one here! www.hookedbyrobin.com/crochet...

I love this, your tutorials are so easy to follow too. Even though you use US terms I just convert it in my head now I've come a long way from learning from you granny square tutorial and I'm currently making this blanket for my friends first grandchild but I'm using emu classic lemonade (lemon) & white and the stitch pattern doesn't seem to show as well as yours, do I need to change my white to a cream or something or do I need a bit of a darker lemon even though I love the colour I'm using? Any advice please robin?

Thank You so much for this tutorial-❤ I am totally obsessed with it, I have made a beautiful baby blanket with baby sport yarn 🧶 worked up so drapey and soft. I have also used a worsted weight scarf in this stitch and it is very pretty too! I think 🤔 that it would look great with any type of yarn that one can choose! Thank You again 😊 BTW I called it a diagonal spike stitch, lol 😂

I'm curious about the elongated strand. Would babies' fingers catch in those? We're frequently cautioned to avoid patterns with holes for fear of those tiny little fingers. What's your thought about those double crochet stitches in the row below?
@lovealwaysmom

I would use this stitch for the exact reason you mentioned. My adult daughter fidgety with her fingers. Anything I make can't have holes.

Thank you so much for your tutorials! I modeled how I hold my hook and yarn on yours. Because of arthritis I can’t hold the yarn in the “right” way, it ends up hurting. Plus I learned to knit first, so I was throwing the yarn over the hook every time instead of letting the hook do the work. Your method I was finally able to get the hang of, thank you!

Brilliant!! I made a baby blanket with this spiked sedge stitch before, but in a solid color - it was pretty, but frankly, also pretty boring. It never occurred to me to alternate colors! Whoa, what a difference!! Your version is soooo much more interesting. I can see all sorts of possibilities- using a self striping yarn to alternate with a coordinating color, for example. Woohoo, I’m off to dig in my stash. Thanks very much, Robin!! You are always inspiring.❤🎉

now this is so much better than its sister/cousin? the sedge stitch . just as squishy but replaces that unsightly gap from the dc-I am sooo tempted to frog the pocket shawl I'm working on in sedge stitch but already 4 skeins down. maybe I'll go half& half because you just make everything so easy and fun to try. this one's no exception and just in time for holiday gifts.

Can this be made with foundation single crochets, instead of the chain? I'm working on another blanket that i started with foundation stitches (i think it was your bubble puff stitch-blanket) and it looks so much better! 😅 I'll never be going back to chains, if i can avoid it
