We had a rule if you injured your foot on the ice during a game. Never take the skate off...As soon as you take it off, the swelling kicks in and you'll never get it back on. If you had to skate the next day, you would show up a few hours early, get your lower half on, but this time, you tied that skate a little bit tighter then normal and then squirt some water on the boot. The tighter laces will cut off some of the circulation to numb up your foot and the water will allow the skate to soften in the right places while the cold of the ice would penetrate the boot easier, allowing for your foot to stay cold and again, numb up your foot. Many reasons why Canadians never wore socks when they skate.

We had a rule back in the day when i skated too, If you still had your front teeth your coach would knock them out so you wouldn't miss them later, lol sorry couldn't resist

It's the same thing in the military, man. If you're on a road march or an op and you sprain your ankle, just tie the boot up tighter. If you take your boot off to check it, it'll swell up like a grapefruit and you'll never get it back on.

It's not meant to be therapeutic, its meant to hurt and be uncomfortable so the player laces up without complaining about a broken toe. If the player had complained about the broken toe, the coach would make the player do this "treatment" again; which is why the player claimed his treatment was a miracle, despite limping away.

Steve H it's because I highly doubt that actually works and seeing as they make Eddie shore the villain in this movie, the villain is gonna have some sick interests, maybe he did it as a scare tactic because he knew they players feared him and he knew if he made them do that they would try not to let on how bad it is, so then they play with no excuses and if they go back saying "it hurts I can't play" shore would have them do it again more likely.
