Cut the bottom (or top) off a glass bottle using only nail polish remover/acetone, string, matches/a lighter, and a sink filled with cold water. =D Takes only a few minutes!

If you use a single strand of String rather than 5-6wraps of Yarn you will have much better results. Possibly why others had trouble, I would also suggest to Not trap the hot air and instead just stand it up, trapping the air heats the entire bottle and you want to limit the heat to a tiny area. Wet string has a much smaller/denser surface area and that creates great heat in a small spot. We also use rubbing alcohol instead of acetone, but im sure they both burn just as hot. Try it!?

Use a bucket of cold water in the garden… much safer 👍

Have you tried this technique with other types of bottles/jars? I want to remove the bottom of some old glass, lab jars (about 3"X5"), but they are completely round, and therefore more open on their tops compared to a beer bottle. I just hope/wonder that they will "hold in the heat"... 🤔 Thanks for the video! :-)

Hmmm, nice idea but it didn't seem to be a straight edge. I agree with the comment below, 1 strand should be better.

GENIUS! I've been wanting to do this to cobalt blue Riesling wine bottles and the new Bud Lite Platinum bottles to make a stained glass window...the kind they used to have at Steak & Ale restaurants (which have been out of business for like 30 years). Thank you! Thank you!

@dc2010ist It was just regular yarn. Cotton burns longer, but it seems that synthetic burns hotter, so maybe try wrapping it lots of times?

@1soyyoyya2 Hmm, I don't know for sure... Shoelaces are a lot thicker than yarn, so maybe that's preventing the glass from becoming hot enough? Let me know if you figure it out!

@toadlikecofee It took me a couple of tries as well. I don't know what's wrong in your case, but is the water very cold? I put a few ice cubes in mine. Did you wrap the string several times/is it cotton string? It might make a difference regarding how hot it gets... Are you letting it burn long enough or too long? I guess just keep trying, or try another tutorial and see if it works better for you!

@TrashPeaches The string made the dent in the bottle. And I used all of the same materials you used. Same polish remover and everything. And it turned until it went out and almost just went out and plunged into freezing ice water. I'll just have to keep trying I guess. It was supposed to be for Christmas.

If you score the glass creating a burr on the glass, you will get a far more precise break. And, a bit of steel wire that is heated just prior to putting it on will do the same thing.

this is a much better way to do it. My old high schools science teacher showed us to use a shoe string, to loop the bottle stem, and pull back and foruth until it heats up, and then we submerged it into an ice bath. Problem is that it always came out somewhat imperfect

@1soyyoyya2 Just do this. Take nice medium thin string not yarn, and dip it in rubbing Alcohol. Tie it around the bottle and have someone with clean hands light it for 30 seconds while its standing up. While its still on fire dip it in cool water and give it a little tap if if it doesnt snap. Good luck.

@TrashPeaches You over did it on the heat. All you need to do is use an ordinary glass cutting tool to make a score mark where you wan't the glass to break and then pour hot water over it slowly to heat it up and then dip it in the cold water. The less intense the temperature change is the more controlled the break will be. I have gotten bottles to break away so cleanly that you can hold the top on the bottle and put water in it and it won't leak through the cut.

@a2zhandi all good guy, I don't need to cut any but have in the past. if ya only have to do one and ya want a good edge, use a TOOL. not acetone dork. I mean sure if you have to knock out a few and ya don't need them to look perfect.. fine.. have fun. bur for precision, time and skill are needed. your finished product is a reflection of the detail you put IN to the work and reflects EVERY shortcut you use. if you want your name on a short cut, its your rep

@TrashPeaches ok just wondering. is there a name for this instrument of yours? a glass cutter is like 4$. so if ya get one and lay it flat on a pile of books at the proper height, then hold the bottle against it and rotate, bingo. might have trouble getting it to scratch all the way around in one go but just keep turning till your happy. though that was over a year ago so you prob have no need any more. did you post the instrument ya made?
