In this video, MeatEater's Director of Conservation Ryan Callaghan demonstrates how to find, and cut, a tomahawk steak on a whitetail deer. The tomahawk steak, or chop, is just another way to cut a combination of rib and loin meat. This is a simple technique that can be used to "fancy things up" when you want to impress your friends, family, and maybe even that special someone. #fueledbynature #benchmadepartner
We worked with the Benchmade Knife Company to make the perfect knife for turning a deer carcass into pretty packages of meat in the freezer. It’s called The Meatcrafter Knife--Steven Rinella Edition and you should check it out. Available for purchase at your local Scheels store, or online here: bit.ly/2P3zdmo

Great how to. I like that me and cal are wearing the same shirt today. Question about the knife. I am thinking about buying one but I was curious about the profits. Does any of the profit go towards conservation or access? Huge selling point for me if so.

What does he mean when he says "cut away the trauma" ? Is that where the cow was killed or something? Is any discoloration on meat indicative of inedible qualities? Sometimes when I look at my store bought steaks there will be a cloudy shaped bit of semi-dark discoloration, should I be chucking those out or should I just cut away the discoloration? just thought this was the perfect place to ask.

Your tomahawks are flimsy because you cut the backstrap off the vertebrae. It would have been nice to see each steak not only attached to the rib but also half of the vertebra.

I feel like with all the animals you guys kill, you could have either waited until you had one without damage to the backstrap, or chosen a different cut to showcase in a video, unless you wanted to develop the trimming of the wrecked meat into some kind of a talking point, which you also didn't do. Not that I'm some professional content creator, but that's my honest feedback, and I mean it with all due respect of course.

I feel like every one of these videos you guys have made in this series shows trauma to the loin. Who is shooting these deer? Tell him/her to aim a little lower or re-sight in their rifle. It's painful to watch.

Sorry, but the editing was piss poor on this video. I seldom give negative feedback, but jumping around with the different camera angles gave me a headache. Otherwise it was informative
