I use a hammer drill, but I operate it in drill/driver mode. Don't use hammer mode, you'll likely cause the tile to crack with all the vibration of the hammer action

I buy the flexible plastics flanges that can be inserted over the pipe first before you install the valve, or you can install the flange after the valve is on, by breaking the plastic seam, designed to separate, then you twist the plastic piece onto the pipe.

Shame you didn’t waterproof the wall since grout is not waterproof.

this wall it outside the shower, we typically do not have waterproofing outside the shower. sometimes I have put waterproof panels up when i am full gutting the bathroom walls, or if I plan to tile half way up the wall outside the shower.
