I have used this video twice this last year, and had success both times. I have went to many stylists over the years, and have cried many times because of the bad results. I saw your hair, and lo and behold, it's the exact haircut I ask for, beg for and never receive. Now I can just do it myself, thanks to you. I'm a single mama of two girls, so the money I am able to save for my girls by cutting our hair is substantial! You are a lifesaver, thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!!!!!!!!

Yes, you have very thick hair! One section of your hair is like my whole head of hair. I hate going to the salon because the girl cutting my hair always says, "You have such thin hair!" I feel embarrassed. It's like a woman who just had chemo, but without the chemo! Here's the great news, I cut my hair per your instructions, and it was the first time my hair looked fantastic! Today, I'm going to cut my hair for the second time and viewed your tutorial to refresh my memory. Thanks a ton!!

DanceLessonsOrlando its better then the stylist saying your hair is like a lion. I have been told that several times by different hair stylist. The end result of each hair cut was terrible because they had no experience with thick curly Irish hair.

DanceLessonsOrlando I know what you mean. The last time I got my hair cut by a professional I was told the entire time about how my hair is so thin etc etc.. My hair falls out because I have PCOS, and I don't want to be reminded of it when I'm getting a simple trim. I felt so horrible that I haven't gotten my hair trimmed in two years. Guess I will have to do it myself!

This is a testament to how awesome this tutorial (and the lady who posted it) is. I followed this tutorial a couple of months ago, and when I was finished I thought it looked pretty good. This being my first time, I did get a bit nervous as the day went on, and decided to go ahead and see a hairdresser for an opinion. Being too shy to admit I did my own haircut, I told the hairdresser a friend of mine did it. Wouldn't you know, the hairdresser said my friend did a good job, and that there's nothing to fix : ) Kudos to this video! Kudos to an honest hairdresser as well who didn't try to swindle me out of a few extra bucks in an attempt to fix something that didn't need fixing. She said my haircut looked good : ) I am going ahead and redoing this haircut again today, and thank you. I enjoy this mostly because my hair is quite long and the last time I got it cut, the hairdresser cut off too much even though I specified not to. I would rather save money and do the cut myself, not being as upset if I mess something up. My hair is the length that this cut works perfect and isn't too fussy. Thank you again!!!

I use this tutorial every time I cut my own hair! Usually if I'm getting a dramatic cut then I will go to the salon, but if I just want a trim / to get rid of my split ends, this works AMAZING! A lot of times it turns out even better than a salon cut, and it's super simple. Great job!!

Hairhowto, I've spent part of this afternoon previewing video's on layering your own hair......although I haven't cut my hair yet ....that will be in a few minutes unless delayed by a grandchild's needs.... but I do want to say, that although yours required a few more steps, and a bit more time, your final result was excellent...exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate the side by side, before and after fotos you supplied also. One thing I would suggest though, is....when you're done with your cut, if you could lightly lift up the layers from the crown area, so we are able to see the length of the final layers. They are so well blended, that they aren't detectable...such a beautiful cut, and the tapered shaping....just beautiful. Worth the extra time....just a professional looking cut. I'll let you know how mine turns out. Thanks for sharing your expertise,....good will come back to you many times over. Cyn

Can I just let you know that because of you and this easy how-to tutorial you've put out here for all of us to learn from is exactly one half of THE reason I now feel confident cutting my own hair (the other half credit goes to ElleBangs :))! When people tell me my hair looks great and are astounded to hear I did it MYSELF is saying something. Your talent for hair and describing the steps is outstanding and I truly appreciate you sharing this with your viewers. Little secret.... I combined what I learned from this video and what I learned from a video ElleBangs posted on self cutting (another KZbin stylist, I'm sure you know of her) and your two techniques combined are the perfect methods for my hair needs and how I am now so gratefully able to cut it! Thank you for this free and useful knowledge! I'm off to subscribe to your channel now! :)

I tried cutting my own hair after watching this, and I'm soooo happy I did! My hair was almost to my butt, and it needed a trim so bad after a year of not cutting it. I tried layering it as well, but it didn't turn out exactly perfect, which is fine to me! It still looks and feels so much better :) I can't wait to regularly trim my hair now without paying out for someone to mess it up! Thanks so much for posting this :)

I have curly fine hair but a lot of hair, and this turned out beautiful! You don't need stick straight hair for this to work :) so happy. At first I didn't take enough of the mohawk section in the back and it was too heavy in the back, but the next day I pulled more hair into the mohawk from behind the ear line and got perfect layers in the back as well. Thanks so much. This is the best and easiest to follow video I've found so far.

this is my third time using this video to cut my hair. after following a different tutorial on youtube over a year ago, i was left with the left side of my hair way shorter than the rest. i found this and used it to trim my hair twice until that side part grew out to a length i was comfortable with. well it finally did, and used this video again to cut about 5 inches off my hair to even it with the side that was messed up. i felt really confident i wasn't going to mess up, because this tutorial is super easy to follow, section, and understand why you are cutting what. at the end, my hair looks great and finally one length again! thank u!!!

Love it! You're so right about the misconception that hair stylists get their hair done whenever they want! I usually just comb forward all of my hair to mimic the "ponytail" cutting technique without actually putting it up in a ponytail. However, I love your layers, I'm thinking I'll give this a try next time I'm cutting my hair.

Ten years later and I am still using this video to cut my hair several times a year. I have long hair and the first time I tried it, I was bound to cut my hair shorter than usual. I was afraid, but it came out great! This is the hair cut I had always tried to get stylist to do on my long straight hair, but they would only trim the bottom. I love the layers. I freaking love You Tube! I just successfully trimmed my own hair and saved $30 not going to the salon! I feel a little guilty to my stylist but I am a single mom on a fixed income, son just started Senior year of high school, daughter is Junior. It's extremely expensive, and I am always looking for ways to cut costs but not do without. .....I believe God wants us to have things and feel good about ourselves! That's $30 to put away towards a mission trip! And the kicker is that I have been growing it out from a $9.99 hack job Walmart cut 2 months ago! It looks and feels and lays so much better! Yay :-) Now, if you could teach me how to hombre my hair, I would be so grateful! !!!!!! Thanks and God bless!

I followed your video step by step pausing along the way to give myself enough time. I have always cut my own hair as I have found that every professional I've gone to, has messed up my hair. I've only had a couple hack jobs myself but nothing too major to I able to work with. I'd never tried doing it the way you did in this video and I only had ever done free layers or with razored layers. I have fairly long hair (mid back), so I was a bit nervous this tutorial wouldn't work for me. However, I went for it and I must say I am extremely pleased with how my hair turned out! It looks stupendous! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with KZbinrs like myself! Have a blessed day! Let's see some more videos!

@@betsyciao Yes we are! I just cut my hair using this technique about a month ago and I love love love it! In fact it's the best hair cut I have ever had, well for a hair stylist that is super picky. I mean its still hard to get the very middle of my back section just right by myself, but this way is better than any other way I have tried! I hope all is well and covid-19 didn't set you back with your business too much. I have been in prayer for all the hair stylist and nail techs. Excellent. My first own haircut - and it looks good!!! As a single mother and student at the university, I haven't been able to afford a haircut since May. Now I tried - and I am just as satisfied with the result, as I were after the last visit at a professional hairdresser. I don't have long, but middle hair (to the shoulders), but your advices worked fine to me. It was a bit difficult to cut in the beginning, since I had to look in the mirror all the time, and it was hard to control the scissor. But suddenly I got used to it, and I have been playing with the hair since until I was satisfied with my look. Thank you!

I just cut my hair this morning, and tried using your video to do my layers, but I have SO much hair that it's hard keeping the sections together :( But I love how your layers turned out, so I'm going to try again tonight! I just want the top layers, and to lighten up the bluntness of the initial cut.

My most favorite stylist ever moved several hours away about a year ago. I only get to see her about 2 times a year and I don't trust anyone else with my hair. I tried going that long between cuts but the split ends were terrible. I had an idea of how to cut my hair, I just didn't know how to get the V shape in the back. It was already cut that way but I was afraid I would lose it. I just used your technique.....it came out beautifully!! Thank you so much for making this video!

Great video! I've cut my hair once before a few years ago (without really knowing how to divide the hair, or to point cut) but tonight I cut my hair following this method and it turned out great! I have curly hair, so instead I cut my hair while damp, and it worked wonderfully. Thanks for sharing, this helped a ton!

I know this video is from a few years ago, but I just used it today to take 3" off my very long hair and build the layers back into it which had all grown out. Your directions worked much better than another video I tried last year. Thanks for your great contribution, I looked at a lot of videos and yours is the best. I really needed a haircut and didn't have the time or money to go the salon and I don't have anyone I really trust to cut my hair right now. Thanks so much!

This was a really fantastic tutorial, and I'm going to be using it for a LONG time to come. My hair looks great, it turned out very even and clean looking, PLUS the layers really added a lot of dimension. Thank goodness my split ends are finally gone and I didn't have to pay through the nose! I'm always so afraid to go to a hair dresser after so many bad cuts, so I figured I'd try this and if it didn't work I'd just go anyway. LUCKY FOR MY WALLET! Thanks so much for posting!

Thank you!! Tried this for the first time and I am impressed! My hair was uneven from a previous hairstylist and this defiantly helped get the length even! I am so excited to actually be able to wear a pony tail again without it being all flat and boring, this cut gave my hair some lift! I didn't get it perfect, but it is soo much better than what it was! I'll defiantly be doing it again. :)

I have EXTREMELY long, EXTREMELY thick hair. I hate going to salons because it's pretty much a guarantee I WILL NOT get what I ask for (this happens to me at every single solitary salon I've ever been to beginning with my first salon experience when I was 6 and was left to flaunt a beautifully layered mullet bowl). So it goes without saying, when it comes to getting my hair cut, I am VERY VERY apprehensive (like VERY VERY;) Anyways, I scoured the internet, read millions of websites, watched billions of videos, in hopes of discovering the best, easiest, and most stylish way to cut (yes cut, not butcher or filet) my own hair. After watching sooo many videos, and reading sooo many posts, I noticed I kept returning to this one, so I thought "yeah.. let's do this" Long story.. ummm longer.. I did exactly what this video told me to do, it only took me about an hour from begining to end, which I think is GREAT timing for my first ever coupe de cheveux (french for haircut, yeah I went there;), and it came out INCREDIBLE!! I have gotten sooo many compliments (side note: can "wow your hair looks amazing, the ends arent all dried up and dead anymore" really be considered a compliment?) and I LOVE the way it looks... Listen to & follow exactly what this woman says & does and you will end up with one of your top most favorite hair cuts of all time (just like I did)!!!!!

Hello betsyciao, thanks for posting this video - I found it very clear to follow and you've easily saved me £25! I've never cut my hair before (only tidied up the front) but I've cut the hair (the whole haircut) for my boyfriends for the last 10+ years. But no-one - boyfriends or friends - has been brave enough to cut my hair for me. I have lots of mid-back length fine blonde hair and I dislike how hairdressers have a) used razor/feather cutting so it goes fluffy and b) cut it straight across so it looks like a curtain. Even though I ask them to cut it blunt and in a V. Your tutorial resulted in me getting exactly the cut I want - a natural-looking layered V-shaped mane. For free! I watched the whole video, then rewatched it in sections, going into the bathroom to do each bit in turn, to make sure I missed nothing out. There's only one thing I didn't understand - after doing your fringe/bangs, you then go over the layers again - from 7'10" in the video - but I'm not sure what I should be doing here. On the first section, you cut along straight then point-cut, but the other section you seem to leave at an angle. These are 'head-shaped layers', because you're pulling them out perpendicular to the head - is that right? Could you explain a little more about what I should be doing here? And what the effect would be if we miss out that stage? Thanks again betsyciao and just think of all that money you're saving your viewers! I'm very grateful for you sharing your skill like this and I'll recommend your video to my friends. xx

Hi Suzanne :)) Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I am happy that I could help. Yes at 7:10, I am and cutting the layers at an angle, I look for the bottom piece that is my guide & I use that to follow and connect my layers. you want to keep them at an angle so that they lay nicely. Thanks Again for watching :))
