I squeezed the bar like it owed me money, and I imagined bending it like a horseshoe. That alone increased my deadlift by ~50 pounds and made it significantly more comfortable on my back. Your videos are super helpful; thanks for all the work you put into this channel!

Hi Brian, been watching for about two months. After 5 months of lifting steady and reliably, my squat kept improving, while strangely my deadlift came to a complete stop. I could squat 275x5 ass to grass, while my deadlift died and stopped improving around 230. I know, sounds fishy. Well a few days ago I sat down and really paid attention to this series of vids of yours. holy hell I was miles off where I needed to be. my setup was all wrong, my drive up was all wrong. I had a curled back, the weight was too far forward, I was pulling with my arms. all around lousy. I focused on your setup and starting position and the difference was immediate. In two sessions I improved from being dead in the water at 230 to powering out 315x5. technique made all the difference in the world. thanks for your knowledge, man.

This series helped make my deadlifts feel so much more solid and powerful. The bit about starting at the same position you're in when you lower the bar to the floor and also "pushing the world away" made a huge difference. I'd been starting with my hips too low and I think it was robbing me of leg drive. Thanks for the tips!

I always enjoy going back over basics and technique. have you ever seen someone who never had to revisit their technique once they initially learned it and was successful, I'd say no. it's a way to make sure you don't over look or not pay attention to small changes you might make that could eventually completely change your technique. some change it on purpose to try and invent a more efficient lift and are usually very seasoned lifters. anyway I enjoy it and can't wait for the next video

As someone in your weight category finishing my second year competing, hopefully hitting Canadians next year, it scares the crap out of me to think about maybe competing against you one day. Also, love how active you are with your viewers, we'll lose that as your channel grows, which it will, but awesome in the meantime. You inspired me to post my first video, and going to look at giving the KZbin thing a run myself, just working out what that will look like and creating a schedule to keep it regular.

It is definitely a ton of more work than I expected but it is really cool all the same! And i am going to try to keep up as much as I can with the viewers as it grows but it is definitely getting more and more challenging!

great cues Brian.'one never gets enough feedback on the deadlift.One thing Id like to ask you'as'part of assistance work for deads is, when you perform the suitcase deadlift with dumbbells, you really get to feel'the work on your quads, like it really tackles the spèed'of the ground portion of the movement, but you'miss the lats engagement as there is no bar to bend around your shins. in this case is necessary'to put your shoulders back and down or altogether just relax your arms and focus on the suitcase deadlift as predominantly'quads related?

I just happened upon your channel yesterday Brian .....and I agree with others on here ...you have great content, clear and informative instruction with excellent explanations on how and why. Yes most of your topics are not new, but you have some great insight into them never the less...and as long as your fundamentals are solid ( which yours are ) then you will have something to offer someone. Maybe its a little cue that might be getting over looked or simply just another take on a movement pattern that your style and manner of instruction has a better way of explaining to someone that they weren't quite able to understand from someone else. Also I like the humor you ad to the videos as well.. you seem like a cool guy and would be someone fun to throw some weight around with. You really deserve more views and subscriptions! Keep up the good videos and stay healthy!

Brian, I do have a question regarding the strongman competitions. I initially wanted to compete in a couple this summer. I am 41 5' 10" and I weigh between 215 - 225 As I looked around for some I found that there was not many in my area or any close to me (I live in Montana). So I instead started competing in PL and actual I've done pretty good setting state records in a couple federations. But I would really like to compete in the strongman. Do you know any that are close to where I live? Can a guy my size even be competitive? and what does it require to obtain your pro card?....thanks in advance for any help you can offer
@BrianAlsruheOfficial
@BrianAlsruheOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Well man, I would scour the Strongman corp and US strongman sites to look for comps. I believe starting strongman.com also shows where some are. And there are all kinds of weight divisions in Strongman. Not as many as powerlifting but there is a less than 200lb weight class and a under 231 pound weight class. and since you are over 41 you could also enter masters division in most contests. If you are breaking records, I am sure you could definitely be competitive. And to get your pro card in strongman there are only 2 classes. Above 231 and below 231. I would advise staying below. To win it, you need to win the national championships, the arnold classic or a platinum plus show for your weight class. It is pretty hard to get your card in Strongman but not impossible at all!

I love your videos (been a sub for about 3 months now) but I do have a question for you in regards to deadlifts.... I dead sumo rather than conventional. This changes a few things (recommended war ups?) and the only video I have seen that seems to really tackle the sumo style is the "Learn To Deadlift From A 11x World Champion (Ft. Stefi Cohen)" video. She is clearly one of the best to learn sumo from and the video is extremely informative, but I was wondering if there was anything additional you might be able to add to help.

Thank you brother. I actually bought some Olympic weights for my home gym and have a hex bar due to be shipped any day. The weights came with an Olympic bar, so I thought I'd actually try a deadlift for the first time in my life at 57 years old. Would you consider doing a hex bar instructional video for squats and deadlifts? Thank you so much and Shine On 🙏🏼

Don't think anyone has commented on it, but whats your thoughts on using double overhand for building grip strength on multiple reps, then using alternate grip on the main set for only 1-2 reps. I used to always use alt grip on multiple reps, but now only use overhand due to possible imbalances on shoulder positioning, and that alt grip may not be building grip strength progressively. Hope that all makes sense, Thanks.
@BrianAlsruheOfficial
@BrianAlsruheOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Well, since I do so much grip training with a lot of the events with Strongman, I don't even worry about that and I have never missed a deadlift because of my grip. I think it is a good idea for guys who aren't training with implements though. and i switch my supinated hand every set to stop any imbalances

100k is almost guaranteed.. Quality content matters and this man SCREAMS quality.. Appreciate what you do big man... You just moved into my top 3 and along with Jeff and Elliot, have made/turned this couch potato into a bonafide gym rat.. I couldn't imagine lifting weights w/o KZbin in general and guys like you specifically.. #Salute

... and I'd add that there IS NOT a better feeling than working out with a couple of guys when you first start getting back to the gym and feeling bad that you can't keep up and having a feeling that they are giving you tips that deep down didn't make sense or looking back and knowing that it was flat out WRONG (One time for Bro Science) then break away for 3-4 month to do some research and work out on your own THEN go back to the group and RUN LAPS around them when benching, squats, pull-ups, and deadlifts ( what's A deadlift)... 😀😀😀😀

For me I don't think about the lats, it's more about the low-traps and pulling the scapulas down. That has helped my stability on a handful of lifts.
@BrianAlsruheOfficial
@BrianAlsruheOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
That IS locking your lats in man. Just a different cue for it. Some people say, “putting your scaps in your back pockets” but it’s the same thing

Interesting cue on checking the 'triangle' gap when engaging the lats. Think I've been guilty of twisting my hands into place so the elbows tuck in, but not really pulling back to engage the lats. Let's see if there's a new PB next week 👀 been stuck at 465lbs forever!

appreciate the speedy reply so as I haven't commented before I will say i'm a big fan man, and I'm thankful for the crazy and unique training ideas I've picked up from ya ( waiters walks :D ) I think the channel should have way more of an audience! that said much respect for it getting as far as it has come, I thought it would be easy to get a little following but I only have 38 subs lol

Dude i appreciate you saying that! It is ridiculously hard to build an audience and it takes time, just like lifting. i want 100k NOW...but much like my numbers in the gym, they will get there but not nearly as fast as I would like.

superb video. i am guilty of not video taping and i wish i had to day. Think I pulled something, but no pain. hmmm.... i have given the details to the best of my ability below and it may have been that my grip was too wide and my feet not close enough to the barbell. frustrated.

The "bending the bar like a horse shoe" cue is a new one for me. I'll have to try it out. I think keeping my lats tight when it gets heavy is my biggest problem

Nah man, i usually don't. I prefer to go barefoot but my left foot is broken and looks pretty gnarly, so since I knew there would be close-ups, I threw them on. Some people think they hurt, some people think they help. i think it is all personal preference as figuring out which way works best for you and your leverages. I hope that helps!

What's your opinion on deadlift grip? Will over/under lead to muscle imbalances? Love your channel. You'll have more subs soon.

I think it is possible and i have experienced it a little bit myself. That is why you see me switching my grip every set. I have never really given hook grip a fair shot because I have never had much problem with the alternated hand position as long as I switch them every set. I think hook grip is great, I just haven't spent much time with it personally

How do you work your breathing and bracing on high rep sets (10-15 reps)? Particularly when reps are moving a fast? Do you still exhale and inhale at the top? Keep this excellent content coming. I've been binge watching all your old stuff and I'm going to run out soon

Hahahah thanks for watching! i usually try to pull as many as possible in one breath. Then I pause at lockout and fill my belly back up, then I hit a few more until I get to the point where I am taking a breath at the top of every rep. Seems to work for me, i hope that helps!

I think it is going to vary from lifter to lifter because of lever lengths. Some people pull that way. Look at Constantine...Try different things and see what works, but pulling with high hips is not necessarily a bad thing!

Always good to go back to the basics! Part 2 already on my mind! How often per week do you recommend deadlifts - its my primary lower body exercise - and what variations?
@BrianAlsruheOfficial
@BrianAlsruheOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
I think that greatly depends on what your CNS can handle. My body can only have heavy deadlifts once every 2 week. But I usually do some form of deadlift 1-2 times a week...But like I said, they aren't extremely heavy. My favorite variations are banded deads, axle deads, farmer's handle or Car deads, Rack pulls and deficits

4:05 I know you mentioned at the beginning that this video is about what has worked for you. But I'm curious (I'm a big fan of Mark Rippetoe's work) and he advices the opposite of that when it comes to calluses tear prevention. What do you think about this?
@BrianAlsruheOfficial
@BrianAlsruheOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
I would have to see what he said before i say I agree or disagree, i definitely respect that guy. I just know that this is how the majority of top guys in Strongman do it for all of their deadlifts, Farmer's, etc...So that is what i know and what I shared. I love rippetoe. Some things of his I think are spot on, others haven't worked as well for me, but that doesn't mean they won't work you you. People are different, this is just hw I have gotten he best results. And i haven't really torn a callous in years but I think that has more to do with hand care than anything else.
