With the O2 sensor, it is recommened to remove it and also refit it once the header is removed from the engine. Just loosen the O2 sensor nut and then turn the header, instead of twisting the sensor cable. Dealer mechanic recommended that, as the sensor cable can get damaged. I also fitted self sticking heat shield inside each of the 3 heat shields and had the headers ceramic coated inside and out. Exhaust is a lot cooler now and the exhaust is always shiny and clean! Good video! 👍

Nice work. Hoping to pick up a newer version so I don't have to do this, but good info anyway. I wonder if some thermal header wrap would fit on the pipes under those heat shields or if it would be too tight. This way you wouldn't block the vents on the heat shields and would still cut down on heat.

Follow up: I bought a 2022 1200 XC over the weekend, and it's got a slip-on already. There's definitely no CAT on the pipes leading up to the slip joint, it's just pipes, so I can confirm putting on a slip-on exhaust 2022 and newer will also De Cat your bike, shed weight, increase noise/fun, and reduce heat. :D

Well, that was a heck of a job. I'll probably do it a bit easier on my Scrambler, with almost the same result. After I remove the tailpipe, I'll take a long drill and drill through the converter as best I can. Then I'll start the engine to blow the dust and obstructions out of the housing so they don't get stuck in the tailpipe. After that, I'll put the tailpipes back on. That will be less work as opening the housing and welding to remove the converter.

An excelent video which has me thinking of heading off to my garage with the metal cutting blade and the welding kit. Removing the cat seems to have made quite a difference to the performance of your bike so happy days. I am lucky enough to have several bikes purchased on the second hand market. When I contact my insurance company to add them on to my policy they ask me if the bike has been modified in any way. I always say that the bike looks to be original but as this is a second hand bike I have no knowledge of things that might have been done that are not obvious. As you have posted on You Tube I assume you will be on the blower ASAP to cough your sins so it would be interesting to hear if this has any implications to your premium! On a more mundane note when I have these bits apart I always have the cpooer anti seize at the ready for re-assembly.

As a few people have left a similar comment it is worth explaining why I did not insert a baffle plate into the exhaust. Firstly, an engine does not need back pressure to function efficiently. That is a misunderstanding. You just need to look at the exhausts on drag bikes and drag cars to see that. Secondly, the decated Scrambler exhaust does still have back pressure, due to the silencer baffles. The purpose of a baffle plate would be to tune that backpressure to use it positively. The back pressure creates a reverse pulse wave at the exhaust manifold that can increase pressure differential and thereby improve scavenging. However, as this is a dynamic system (pulse frequency changes with revs) the exhaust can only be tuned to benefit power at a certain rev range. Improved scavenging is the product of careful matching of inflow through the injectors, valve timing and overlap and exhaust tuning. This means that if I were to fit a baffle, the benefit, if any, would be unknown without testing and tuning on a Dyno. I assume that the manufacturers of replacement header pipes do this, but again the benefits of installing an aftermarket header with an X pipe are uncertain if you are not also improving the inflow and remapping the fuelling. The whole point of my video was a free and simple solution to the heat problem. It was not intended as a bid to increase power. Because I also fitted a high-flow air filter and removed the airbox snorkel, this has unquestionably increase the engine power. Any further modification, such as welding in a baffle plate is pointless without looking at all these other factors and testing on a Dyno.

I don’t want to bother you with any similar questions & if it is apologies, just want to know is there anything else I would need to do for bike apart from just what you did in video, as I read all comments and your response on no need to instal any baffles, but any adjustments I would need, any need for air intake filter change? Would appreciate your suggestions, Thanks

I made this change to reduce the heat on my leg, not to improve performance. However, I did also fit a high-flow air filter. But again, that was for convenience rather than performance. I would suggest that it is worth doing and it is not expensive. I fitted a DNA air filter.

So it's a metal substrate? I remember reading a (Haynes or Bentley?) VW shop manual from back in the 1970s they recommended using a heavy prybar to smash out the ceramic substrate and shake it out. I think that was recommended if you were taking a Rabbit/Golf from the US to a country where only leaded gas was available. So you wouldn't clog the converter with lead oxides. In that case the substrate was ceramic, and it was brittle, so you could just break it apart and shake out the parts without cutting/welding the case.

I've been toying with this idea for a little while, even picked up a spare set of headers. @roughrider9831

In the days of carbs, maybe this would have leaned the fuel air ratio so much that melted pistons would have been an issue. However with modern fuel injection, my understanding is the bikes ECU uses the O2 sensor to monitor the fuel /air ratio post combustion. It then adjusts the ratio at the injector accordingly. Therefore no worries about the bike running too lean.

@@SongsFromTheSaddle Great thank you for your detailed response and explanation. I am no where near as knowledgable as you hence why I asked the question. I just know what TecBikeParts mentioned in their de-cat video. Probably because they offered to weld plate in there for extra cost if you shipped it to them. It is great to know that not only did it reduce the heat but the added benefit was a little increase in power. I plan to do same as yours as any added power is bonus but not the main point of the de-cat as getting the heat lowered. Thanks again!

@@scottkelley3263 I don’t think you need to weld anything, it slips right off. Depending on the year I guess, the 2022+ model years I believe it’s in the back, so a slip on exhaust decats your bike, the older model years I think you can buy an H pipe and that will decat your bike. If you don’t want to do either of those, you can cut it out, there’s a very simple video I seen of someone doing it. It’s stainless steel like the rest of the exhaust, you cut it open and pull the grey insert(cat) out and then MIG/TIG weld it back together. Looked really easy if you can do a simple weld, definitely will save you 300-400 bucks depending on the model year.
