In today's episode I tackle the most frequently asked question I get on the channel. How to choose the perfect timepiece when buying a watch and how to choose between various models you like. I then take a look at a selection of Breitling and Sinn deals on eBay that caught my eye over the previous week from the $1000 to $4000 price range. I share a selection of luxury watches including stunning vintage venus based chronographs, a classic Navitimer, a Montbrillant and a Colt GMT from Breitling. From Sinn, I take a look at a 7750 Valjoux based 903, also Lemania based 903, also a 656 and it's more affordable version the 556, and lastly the new "red seconds" 556 version too.

Great vid TGV and what a beautiful watch to end it on. It's making me think about my next watch being a vintage. No idea yet since I'm still in the honeymoon phase with a couple of watches. As I'm watching this vid, I kinda thought that it'd be cool if you provided a service to help eBay challenged individuals purchase vintage watches. As part of this service, you could also review the vintage pieces for an episode if the piece is of interest.

Maybe just me but vintage Breitlings seem so much more desirable than their current incarnations. In fact if you're ever stuck for a theme, I'd be tempted to ask which brands have modern watches more desirable than their vintage offerings and vice versa. Thanks for the video TGV, good to see you're looking happy & healthy, take care.

As probably previously said, The Ebay 656 is not the same watch you saw on Watch buys which is a 556. The 656 was discontinued a few years ago, so it may be why its appreciating in value. Differences; Case: 556 satinised, 656 bead-blasted, both non-tegimented Back: 556 see-through sapphire, 656 s/steel Anti-Mag: 656 extra protection Weight: 656 is 2g heavier than 556 Thickness: 556 11mm (due to the crystal back , 656 10mm

Isaac Curry - save a bit more and then look at a used Omega Speedmaster. Occasionally TradeMe has some quite good deals. Careful with eBay- customs will sting you if they pick it up. They have an online calculator to get an idea of duty/tax though.

Isaac Curry if you really want a Navitimer you should save and get that. Don't settle for something if it isnt what you want. My first 'luxury' Swiss watch was an IWC Spitfire Pilot Chronograph! It took me 3 years of solid saving to get it (and a wife that took pity on me!) and every time I look at it it makes me smile! It was well worth the time it took to get! I think TGV has a video somewhere about settling for an interim or not....your call but spending on an omega will only hold you back getting the Navitimer!

It's interesting because personally i don't really care about what sort of mechanical movement I have in my watch I base it purely on looks and feel. If anything I am often pleased when a watch has an eta over and inhouse because it means the price will be a little less and to me ETA is more than good enough

So if your new looking for your first watch keep an open to things that aren't the most obvious. Personally for my collection its always the quirky one off version of something that I like the most. Also create parameters for yourself. For example, I stay away from buying watches above 40mm. If you have large wrists maybe only 41 - 45mm it all depends. Parameters are good and thats how to keepers are formed. Like TGV said just keep narrowing it down. With learning and experience you'll know whats your cup of tea and whats not.

TGV could you recommend any good horology books please. I hear you guys talking about different movements and such and haven't a clue what it means. I understand I can get loads of information online. However I am not sure what the correct information is. Somewhat of a minefield. Also I really like looking at illustrations of the different parts of different watches. I am New to the hobby.

robert atcheson it takes time... don't expect a couple books to give you all the information under that dial! I went to college in Geneva to be a horological expert. Trust me, it takes hands on experience to really know what you're talking about. Good luck and happy hunting!!

I finally researched that song "Bad Habits" by The Last Shadow Puppets and am loving these guys. As usual I'm behind the times in music, but I just downloaded all their stuff from Apple Music. Their rather bizarre musical complexity really tickles my brain. Oh yeah, I liked the watch stuff too. 👍

Haha, thank you Chris, they wear gold day-date in case you were wondering. I am rather new to them too. It cant be all Bach and Wagner all the time. I found out about them via Peaky Blinders. Great show btw if you are not hooked already ;-) Best regards, TGV

Once Again, Great Video TGV! Interesting why an Ebayer would advertise a watch for a small fraction less than the original Price brand new!!? Of course you would be from new! However if you found the right deal, on a bargain piece, then EBay would be the way to go.... Great Content! BMJ ENGLAND.

TGV. I've been told the best place to buy watches online is chrono24 yet you only seem to mention Ebay, at least as far as I've heard in your videos. Have you used chrono24 before? Is there a particular negative or positive with the site or is one site pretty much the same as any other?

I would like to know how to tell a good Chinese movement from a bad one. Have there been proven ones, which brands use them, what are the reference numbers and what does a buyer have to look out for etc. Guess that could make an interesting video ;) I have heard that some of them use very good architecture from now unprotected Swiss patents and thus can easily compete with the Swiss watch industry and its quality for the average watch enthusiast.

I spend absolute aons to select a watch because I tend to take into consideration both the ticking of boxes and my liking of the watch..that's probably the best way to avoid buyer's remorse, but maaan it does give me a lot of work!! Definately all the knowledge I got - and keep getting everyday - from your channel and the community helped a lot, so that's the most precious advice IMO. Cheers my friend!!

Panos Lioulias - There are plenty of "Knock-Off vs Real-Thing" reviews. When they say they purchased the knock-off to do a comparison, I suspect it wasn't intended till after the fact. Everything looked alright at a glance but as you compared the two together then the little details started to surface. So I'm weary of eBay & Amazon and USPS for anything I can't afford lose. I had recently tracked a package being sent to USPS and as I watched it travel from city to city, back and forth for distances many times further from A to B. I tried to inform them when it was back in my city, but of corse, only an email could be sent to CS in which I never received a response. Two more trips to Fresno and back it finally made it with worn packaging and no indication of the cross country trips it had traveled. Downsize government until we live "in a perfect world."
