We use only the containers (red lids over clear bottoms from Hillshire Farms) that cold cuts come in. They are about the size of a sandwich and hold 2 or 3 servings. We put labels on them, with the food and date. Having only one size, they stack neatly in the frig and freezer. When we run low or the lids break, we have cold cuts for lunch. So the containers are free.

I think the container thing was the response to suddenly being inundated with plastic containers of food and trying to reuse/recycle them in some way. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and remember even reusing bread bags and jelly jars! We still have the Loony Toons jelly glasses from my childhood! I think it's from a generation that had very little or had to make things last. My grandparents all lived through the great depression.

I was born in 1953 and we saved EVERYTHING! Ha, ha! Rubber bands from the daily newspaper went in the drawer, newspapers were saved for the school paper drive, paper bags from the grocery store folded and kept in a spot, egg cartons used for crafts or donating to school for crafts, baggies that only had crumbs in them from sandwiches taken for school lunch (shake out and use again), brown lunch bags brought back home if not soiled and reuse, soda was in glass bottles as were most bottled items in grocery store. We did not drink soda but collected the bottles in the neighborhood to take to the minute market to trade in for money to buy penny candy (fireballs were 2 for a penny), you could get a bag full of candy for a quarter! And Icees were ten cents! And it goes on - back in the day appliances/TVs lasted and they could be repaired even the toaster (my dad was handy). Now, we live in the plastic age and everything gets thrown away. I still save a few things, like leftover screws and things left over from putting things together- just hate to throw it away (just might need it one day -😂). This mindset came from living through the depression. But I am still frugal and not wasteful. As a side note, I clean out leftovers and expired items each week the night before the garbage truck is coming. That way I don’t have science projects and a packed fridge. Also, have a “Must go” dinner once in a while (where everything must go!). Loving this series of 5 minute declutter!!❤❤

I remember…Way back in the day companies would place their items in useable glass containers [like a small drinking glass for mustard} it was the best way to keep the items after you use all the product. Now companies are helping the consumer to fill the landfill (plus their products come in advertising packaging) l wish there was a better way. Simple packaging (less colour) stand by your products, and pass the savings to the consumer. It’s time. Thank you ladies.

Classico spaghetti sauce still comes in glass jars that can be used for canning. These days if you don’t reuse, it is easier to recycle plastic than glass. Few recycle centers will take it due to weight and expense of recycling. There is a place for both. If you don’t reuse, recycle.

Just for grins, I’ve been keeping a running total. Day 17 and over 400 items have left the house. I’ve tried to stick to the rules but haven’t succeeded completely, I’ve run over on time on a couple of days where the area was so close to being done I couldn’t stop. On days 11-14 everything was stored in one cabinet, though not in individual spaces so I started at the top and did a couple shelves a day, finished on the correct day and the whole cabinet was done. On the plastics, rather than toss them in the trash, if they have a recycle number (type of plastic) that can be recycled locally, they are going into the recycle bin, not the trash.

It's especially important to get rid of any plastic containers that have been damaged by heating in the microwave. All plastic containers leach "forever chemicals" (PFAS) into foods when heated, and the damaged ones do so even more. This is why so many consumer protection and environmental groups are telling folks to NEVER microwave in plastic. No, we can't eliminate all PFAS in our lives, but we can seriously cut down on the amount we eat and drink!

I was born in 1958. My family always reused the big margarine tubs for leftovers. We called them poor man’s Tupperware. Tupperware was very expensive. There were no Rubbermaid type storage containers that you could buy in the store to store food. The only plastic food storage containers available in stores in our area were freezer containers in pint or quart size. They weren’t sold year round. They appeared around August with the canning jars at the beginning of the harvest season. We kept the actual margarine in a separate shelf from the leftovers. Margarine wasn’t a very common thing in our house. I grew up on a farm, and I made our own butter.

I already decluttered everything in the kitchen at the beginning of this year, because I went from a small standard kitchen to a small wheelchair adapted kitchen. This means that I only have 2 deep drawers for plates, bowls, pans, 3 upper cabinets but I can only reach the bottom shelves when sitting (the upper shelves are only used for items I use now and then) and a narrow pull out system for breakfast cerials, herbs, etc. So I have cabinet in the livingroom that I use for the kitchen towels, rice/pasta, storage containers, and cat food. But this cabinet is also in use for other things, so I have only 2 shelves for kitchen stuff available in there. When I decluttered the old kitchen I found out how much I had.

My mom at least labeled ours, but my grandparents did this and did not label! I loved visiting their house, but this always made snacking…interesting!

I grew up in the 70's and we also had random food containers in the fridge never Knowing what was really inside or how old it was. This was especially true at my Nana's home. She went through the depression and never through anything away.

I definitely reused empty plastic containers when I was growing up and still do to this day. Recycling as much as I can. Then when it gets stained or anything like that I just toss it out with no worries. Although, I regularly go through the containers to make sure I have the same amount of bottoms and lids.

Plastic lids are usually flimsier and break before the containers, so I use containers with no lids as bins to hold things in my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I actually put a label on the bottom of the container that says "HAS NO LID" if I'm not ready to use a lidless container right away. It's a great money saver and greener than buying new plastic bins. Today I did find a lid to toss but that was it, all my lidless containers are being used and I tried for five minutes but truly couldn't find more than one item to toss.

SO do you freeze food in glass containers?
@mbounds396Ай бұрын
@@jgrudt hi, no. We rarely have leftovers. My husband eats a lot. It’s just the two of us. We cook enough for two or three days at a time.

It actually feels good to know that some drawers and corners of the house are in good condition and it’s because I’ve watched Cas for some years already. Today I feel pretty good cause my glass containers are in order. And yes I grew up with those plastic containers but once I saw the Tupperware containers I got them. Now I switched to glass containers. I even convinced my mom to get glass containers for leftovers. Thank you Cas, love your videos

I remember when the companies made the margarine containers were made pretty so you would keep them.
@MsFoxy-bo4uc2 ай бұрын
I keep four and recycle or throw away the rest depending on if I can. I saved 1 lunch meat one for my clothes pins to put in. That’s it. The rest leaves. This is amazing though. I’m really enjoying this series. 😊

Yes, I grew up in a house just like that. Nowadays I am doing much better, but it is still a struggle to make myself get rid of those old food containers!

Hi Cas! I thought I was the only one who grew up in a house where cottage cheese and butter containers were used for food storage! 😂 Thank goodness I discontinued this unofficial family tradition years ago when I saw that the Dollar Tree store had 4-5 clear plastic containers for $1.00, now $1.25…. You still can’t beat that and they look a heck of a lot nicer too! … I LOVE this decluttering challenge! Any chance of you doing it every month? Your friend from Oregon! 😃👋🏼

😂I grew up like that and did that for YEARS I DISCOVERED BALL JARS AMS PLASTIC LIDS FOR THEM IN 2019 Game changer for me! I did get a lot of nice glass Tupperware with plastic lids and the lids get ruined! I decided to keep the glass and get PRESS AND SEAL for the random lid-less glass Tupperware for now 😆

I switched to glass with lids. (Pyrex is strong enough to go in the freezer.) I keep 1 quart yogurt containers (without the lids) to use when my dog comes in with muddy paws. (I dip each paw in warm water to wash off the dirt.) I don't use the sink because I don't want my drain clogged with mud. I dump the water outside and toss the container.

Thank you. Thank you! I used to freak at being overwhelmed on starting! Your chart has helped! Where I had stuff, I now have empty space! We aren't ones to buy a lot, we just don't have a lot of storage space! It's nice not to have spaces packed with unused stuff! I just wish I took photos!!! Thank you!❤

Ih my gosh...us too growing up with the dang butter dishes filled with leftovers!! I think shortly after I found you online Cas a few years ago and decided to begin my decluttering journey, my leftover container cabinet was the first thing. I literally filled an entire garbage bag or two even with all the mismatch dishes and missing parts dishes and got rid of all those butter tubs!!! Now I only use clear leftover container because my husband is notorious..if he can't see it, it doesn't exist !!! I also realized that I didn't use that many leftover containers, I had way too many. I used to keep 2 bins in my kitchen now, and I only keep one. I do keep some overflow because I always give some away at family holiday dinners when we host.

Thank you very much for these 30 days. each one is making a difference in my home as well as in my mind. Hurrah! I'm seeing progress where before I was seeing piles of "stuff." I'm not at a point where I can do the all day declutering. I hope that one day I'll be there. Thanks again!!!!! 😃
🐝 Cass, you’re the best. 😭 I have been watching you for years. I would start declutterring and then stop. The piles would start back up. I’ve have been declutterring consistently since November 2023. I look around and it feels so good not to see stuff everywhere! I’m not where I want to be, but closer than ever. I have a busy schedule and unpredictable most of the time. But, This challenge has helped push me to get more out!💖

I'm a Boomer baby and my mother never bought a food container...ever! I abandoned that habit years ago. There is one exception. I'm the only one who eats cottage cheese. I always have a couple cartons in my fridge. Well, one of those cottage cheese containers is my hiding place for Pillsbury Chocolate Chip edible cookie dough. I haven't been found out yet.

I now keep only a very few such containers, mainly bc I do share food with some elderly neighbors. They don’t have to remember to get a container back to me. Otherwise, I use glass containers with tight snap lids & vacuum seal bags for the freezer now.
