Decluttering is something that we often overthink, overanalyze and overcomplicate! It doesn't have to be hard or time consuming. Grab a box and a trash bag and just start. Pick a drawer, closet, cabinet or pile and pull something out. Do you like this? Would you buy this again? If the answer is no, it's got to go!
Hot Mess House airs in the US on Thursday, June 17th at 8:00pm ET on HGTV. Don't miss this season premiere, it's so inspiring!

I love that you tell people to get stuff that doesn't fit out of the closet, but that it doesn't have to be donated. For some of us, it's actually very practical to keep different sizes of clothing, and we are able to do it without shame and judgement. I like having pieces that I like available no matter what size I am without having to shop. Well worth the space of a bin put out of the way for me.

Your tips are great! I am decluttering at the moment and will definitely use them. My favourite question so far, based on the "silent to-do list" Dawn mentioned, is, "Do I want/need to spend time organizing this item ever again?" When you make the silent to-do list loud and imagine that every item is talking to you and giving you orders like "Clean me, Dust me, Eat me, Use me, Read me, Repair me!" etc. you see why you are overwhelmed. And you will answer "NO!" most of the time. :)

I was thinking the same thing. When I am in my worst flare-up (with chronic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome) I realise that I need to have systems and patterns already set up in my house to allow me to do what is needed then rest. When the flare-up is settling down there is so much to do to catch up with the simple things that I don't really get to enjoy the feeling of less pain/tiredness. I am overwhelmed with what I need to do. I'm starting with Decluttering before I try to do any real organising. I know the only way is one item at a time. I wish you good luck on your journey towards a house you enjoy and can rest and relax in. Blessings, Dot

When you said if it's not a hard yes, it's a hard no, I thought about two things: people that I've met via POF (some are a hard no right away and some are not a hard yes...) and how a friend was having a garage sale this afternoon for a charity and I had an hour to grab things to donate. I found dozens of things that were not a hard yes and became very easy to donate.

Omg I love that you are doing this new show oh um ok you already did it a year ago just realized! Lol but still great for you an adventure! I’m loving your ideas your planning your organizing is fabulous not too much to expect like some organizing “theories “ I like the touch it in its spot and decide then right then while you hold it and I’ve been doing that one spot at a time ! This is serendipity I love your style !

The advice you give in this video is wonderful! Areas in my house are in need of decluttering. This seems so easy! I get so overwhelmed with my craftroom when I try to clean it that I give up and take a nap! LOL
