When you said we keep things "just in case", that totally resonated with me. I'll find myself decluttering and come across a piece that I literally NEVER wear, and be like " Well...I better keep this just in case. I mean I might need it someday, if I ever go camping (yeah right)...and it rains...and I need to be warm...yet waterproof." What??? No, never gonna happen. Get rid of it! Lol

First: Loved your look today! Second: I go through my closet about every 2 months, and I still feel as though I have so much! The funny thing is, I have about 1/8th of what most of my other friends. Its honestly so sad how blessed I am and how aware I am of that, and how many other people I know who are oblivious to that. Sometimes I need to take a minute to remind myself and say a prayer thanking the lord for how fortunate I am, and not look at the fact my friends have more but I have plenty on my own.

here's a few suggestions on techniques to de clutter fast Allow yourself 5 minutes every day to de clutter Give away one item every day Fill up a trash bag today! Make a list of what to do this week. Buy four bags and sort everything into trash, give away, keep, or relocate. (I discovered these and the reasons they work on Nilah declutter tips website )

You have no idea how helpful this video is. I had already gone through my clothes and picked out the stuff I didn't want. But, after watching this video, off top, there were a few items that came to my mind and I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Also, I watched a video by Jesse and Jeana (BFvsGF) where instead of donating to thrift stores, they got a bunch of clothes and drove around looking for homeless people to give the clothes to. It was super inspirational, and since then I decided that from now on, that is what I am going to be doing with the clothes I no longer need. I encourage you guys to do the same. They need it more than anyone else and it just feels amazing knowing that you are helping someone in need.

Really enjoyed this. I am feeling strangled by "stuff" right now. I like a place for everything and right now I don't have it because I have too much. I can't feel the peace from a uncluttered house that I have felt in the past. I am going to buy this book and begin the path back to my happy place.

I think the idea of making sure all the clothes you have make you happy is key, and I agree with not spending money on stuff that look 100% stellar on you to overall, reduce your consumption of goods. However, I am not sure how I feel about the part about not "downgrading" stuff to lounge wear or gym wear. I feel it encourages general overconsumption. Like, don't bother using stuff that is still perfectly functional for a purpose (sleeping or training), just get rid of it and buy some more. I know it's still a valid option to donate thing, but usually, thing we re-purpose as lounge wear are items that are most probably worn off, so we don't really get to donate them. Anyway, I like the general idea, and these were just my thoughts. :) I really love all your videos Jessica, your channel is truly my favourite on youtube. Like somebody else said, yours just feels so real and honest. You do such good work

Part of the thing is she wants u to feel good in your clothes regardless of whether u are relaxing at home, going to work or taking a class at the gym. Yes, u can wear anything to work out in or sleep but when u dress better u feel better- just the way it is. This method does not mean u will need to run out and buy things as most of as have enough of what we love however o e thing I will be purchasing is 2 sets of summer pj's no more ratty shirts for me :)

Emma nuelle I agree too, downgrading your old stuff for lounging and working out is fine. Why would you get rid of a perfectly good old tee that you can sleep in. I know this decluttering book has a mind/soul component to it and it sounds really interesting. But to purchase more, ie: loungewear, is simple just continuing to consume more. I find it to be contradicting. Otherwise, great video, great advice. I always think, 'can someone else get more use from this'. And of course there are always the fat and skinny clothes....that drives me nuts!

+Emma nuelle I downgrade shirts sometimes, I'm in a shirt from a high school event that's too big right now lol, but I'm getting angry at how much I use my old shirts for work shirts that might get massage oil on them. I'm here like "I don't even want to wear these in public why won't I just throw them somewhere else and get work shirts uuuuugh"

I learned from another decluttering site was to take pictures of the item....I can have it still - in a flat picture or saved on a flash drive of items I loved - it is fun to look back at timeframes in life. One day, those will get deleted but it was a little less stressful to let it go. :)

HA!!!! I didn't realize that you were a KonMarie plan. I heard of her only a few days ago, but I've been following her ever since! I'm a REAL beginner, learning her methods, but she has really smart techniques! I was able to talk my daughter into giving up HALF her books, based on, "Does this still serve you? When you look at it, does it still spark joy? Or would you rather bless someone else with it now?" This girl is a hard-core gatherer, so for her to get rid of half her books was huge! Today is my turn. She gets to see me in action, and I'm really excited!

I watched this video right after it was posted and have since been tidying up all over my house. I started with books and DVD which I sold at Half Price Books and got $125, so that was awesome! I am now working on my clothes, shoes, and bedding. So far I have 5 big bags to donate to goodwill and am still going through everything. It feels great to purge what doesn't make actually me happy and I feel so much lighter! My next stops are the kitchen and then the craft room. Lastly is the garage, mainly because it is 108 degrees in TX right now so I'm waiting for it to not be hot enough to fry eggs on my garage floor before I start working in there. Thank you for the video and for bringing this book to my attention...I feel great and my house is looking great too!!!

When my dear mother passed away nearly 3 years ago, I was in charge of purging and selling 1 of their many homes. My parents were big collectors of GREAT things. But after having the "GREAT SALE" as I loving called it, of things I could not use or stuff into my home I learned a whole bunch! I swapped things from our home for their WONDERFUL things and now I really keep the purging going. (I was ALWAYS a purger!). When I go to a store I think LONG and HARD if I really want the item. When I buy new clothes now I ALWAYS purge the amount of items that I bring into my home. I will not live with clutter and STUFF just to have it. So bravo to you and your great purge. It's very freeing indeedy! Happy Newlywed to you!!!!!!!! Marriage really suits you!

It is sooo much easier to get dressed in the morning in an uncluttered closet. Quality over quantity. There's no sense in holding onto clothes just for the sake of having a bunch of clothes. I finally learned that lesson!

Honestly, thank you so much for this video! I'm starting college in the fall and moving into a dorm so lately i've been trying to really whittle down the immense amount of stuff I own to make it easier to pack what I really need. Dealing with clothes has been the hardest. Every time I try to tackle my collection I end up getting overwhelmed and giving up, but watching all your decluttering videos has helped so much. Changing your mindset really does make all the difference in the world

Thank you for this video, I really appreciated it!:) The thing about KonMari is that it really makes you think, about your life and you, as a person. What do you like, what don't you like. What represents YOU. I think it more as a mental process than anything else. It helps to accept the things that have happened in the past, then let go of them ; to stop living in the past. Also, to stop worrying about the future. Most of the things that we "hoard" are for the fear that might happen if we don't have a certain item when we need it someday. As Marie said in the book, it will be fine. Things we may or may not need once or twice during our lifetime no do need a permanent storage place in our homes. The final magic touch happens when we start living in the NOW. :)

it is such a great video! you are totally right, somehow it's hard to get rid of things because of some sensless emotional bond. When i was moving out from my parents i took so many things with me and still there's much more left. In this moment you realize how many things can "need" one person. The good side of it it's that actually when you're not living there and you haven't seen things in there for a while it's much easier to declutter. When I was a kid i didn't have any serious own money. my parents always said "whatever you need just ask for it" but the truth was, they buy things they like (ok mostly my mom) not stuff i actually wanted. Then when I had my very first own money I start storage lots of clothes and cosmetics, perfume, literally everything which I like because I CAN. I was so bonded with it that it took a while to understand that these things were, are and will be in store ALWAYS whenever i need it and that i don't have to own it all. I had more pulovers than winter has days. I feel much better after geting rid off all clothes i actually didnt like anymore, didnt wear. I'm pretty sure people who get these have now more use of it that i had.

I am so intrigued by the idea the writer of this book has created but also afraid of it as well. I bought this book and have put off reading it because I know it will force me to change, I know that sounds silly but change is scary for me and I get anxiety thinking about it lol. I have to try to muster up the courage and finally get myself to open up its pages and read and really take in the messages inside and embrace change, especially if it's so life changing and good for you! I am hopeful that I will try and so happy you have shown its hard but doable, thanks so much Jessica!

I read the book about 2 months ago. I think I had told you about how we lost everything in a house fire in March of 2014. We were so Blessed in the way our community helped us out and I had been holding onto the things that we were given out of fear of hurting others feelings. But when I finally realized that they would be okay about it, I was able to purge about 80%. I was able to start purchasing things in my own style again because I had space to store them now. Very freeing experience. Now trying to work through other categories. Keep sharing your insight!

2 things: I can't wait until you do a makeup declutter using this method. I think we all do the same thing when decluttering, which is keeping things because of the idea of them! It will be so cool to see the difference between previous makeup declutters and future ones using this method. The second thing is that I really want to do this before school starts! The only issue is bringing all of the stuff at my moms to my dads or vice versa! Lol, coparented teen struggles! Loved the video, Jess (as always)!

So inspirational. I love the book and have been working my way slowly through my house and office. You bring up a great point about buying multiples until you find "the one." Sometimes it's hard not to do that, I have been experiencing the same thing with makeup and nail polish. However, some advice I like is to go cheap on trendy clothes, but really spend and be SUPER CHOOSY about classic pieces. Thanks for the inspiration!!!!

I think I am going to go declutter my closet now. I am usually a person who loves to declutter and get rid of stuff I don't use, although, lately I have gotten into a pattern of thinking that I don't have very much stuff so I don't need to declutter. My clothing situation is at a point where I have to dig through my closet to find the few items that I like to wear and that make me happy (I would say 80% of what I own I do not like or fit into anymore). Thanks for making this video and I hope in the future we all can make smart purchases for things we will actually wear and love!

I've been working on decluttering to. I have read a few books just to keep me going as I declutter other areas of my life. Clothes was the easiest since I have always been one to go through them each season. Books and Makeup was a lot harder! I am getting better with the makeup since I have joined dotfully. I can list what I don't want and the other person pays for shipping and the website emails a shipping label. So now I at least feel like I am giving it a better home since none of my friends use makeup. The books were hard at first but then I realized I could just give them to my library. I probably wasn't going to read them again and if I wanted to I could just get them there or online through the ebook library system. I still kept some but I got rid of a good portion and will probably get rid of more. Thanks for posting this video! I might check out this book it seems like a good method of thinking. I hope you keep on posting more decluttering videos!

I read the book and I was amazed by the efficiency of this method. Your video is quite good and gives a little push to actually do it. So far, I managed to fold my things in the drawers as she says, it is so much more convenient. I am of course decluttering too but it is very overwhelming because I have a happy memory with every single piece, so I really need to be reasonable and at least throw what is so damaged that I would be ashamed to wear publicly. And I am so into Feng Shui! :-) A very complicated situation for me, but I progress seriously. This book is definitely a must have, you're right.

I just did this Sunday... My closet was so packed that I hated to even go in it, trying to find something to wear... I can relate to everything you were saying... It was kind of emotional though, because about 40% of my clothing still had tags on it, never worn, forgotten in all the mess... But I am proud to say that I did very well, gave about 75% to my daughter...Now I know what I have and love, so it just makes life easier and more organized... Thanks for sharing xo

Thank you for the motivation! Today I'm going through all my clothes as well I have so much stuff from years ago that I don't wear that I was always afraid to get rid of but I'm finally doing it and it feels so good!

It really is amazing just now much easier it is to get rid of things when you change your mindset from 'what do I want to get rid of?' to 'what do I want to keep?' I had to split my clothes into various categories when I was going through them using the KonMari method because I felt it was too much to do everything in one day. I still feel like I have too much but at the same time I struggle to find anything else to get rid of so I am focusing for now on working with a capsule wardrobe and getting rid of things as they get worn out and not purchasing anything new for a while.

You definitely got my brain started. I looked at my closet and my dresser and then I thought back to that big bag of clothes I threw away on accident that I meant to give away and I said no I need my stuff. It might be time to get that book.

Liking something used to be a good enough reason to buy something. That is why i had SO much stuff. When i finally came to the belief that i don't have to own everything i like and that my worth is not attached to possessions i was able to own much less. It is SO freeing. It gives so much more clarity & focus towards real goals & life purpose.

I just did this with my makeup and clothing. I am so much happier getting ready for the day and doing laundry! I had about as much as you did. I am also now a much pickier shopper. I used to go out and just buy what looked nice and when I brought it home, it would only match a few things or maybe just one thing! Now I have several questions I ask shopping and buy quality now too. I did the downgrading too and it never, ever worked. It was sad to see how much money I wasted, but the mind change that happens with this helps us realize how material crazy we really are in this world. I really enjoyed giving all my good clothes that I didn't want to keep to the church thrift store where it will give SOMEONE else some JOY! =) With makeup, I took out so much that I now only have a small gift box full of makeup and it is wonderful. I am also a minimal makeup wearer ;)

You're just like me! I did the Konmari method with my clothes yesterday. I feel a little bit stressed from time to time that i got rid of like 2/3 of all my clothes because my mom can't get rid of stuff and somehow teached me to live like that too. Until i started reading the book. I'm living in the Netherlands. I'm so excited to see more of your Konmari decluttering videos! Bye!

WOW! Thanks for this video, Jessica. I've heard many reviews of this book but I've not seen any videos with someone actually giving an explanation of her method and then follow it up with a video showing you actually put her method into action as you declutter your clothes. I have to admit, it was hard to watch you do this and see your "Get rid of" pile getting higher and higher. Ha! This is something I have been wanting to do in my own life, after giving birth to my son, but have been putting it off with the typical excuse of, "I will lose the weight and fit into this again" My son is almost two.... it's time!!! Thanks again... for this little kick in the butt. I would love to see an after video of your closet and see how it's been organized, etc... AND would love to see other declutter vidoes you are implementing with the book... like, utensils,etc..

You did a great job! Even though you got rid of a smaller percentage than you expected to, what matters is that you're happy with what you have. Minimalism is a process, I found that I felt the same about still having a lot of things, but now, I only have about 60 pieces across (including all categories). I'm sure you will find yourself continuing to purge your wardrobe and other belongings!

This video is really inspirational for decluttering in general. I'm trying to lose a lot of weight (30 or so pounds) so I'm not willing to go through my closet just yet (literally 75% of my clothing is from when I was at least ten pounds lighter). But this has inspired me to go through my CD collection, my entire bookshelf that is stuffed, and even the places in my room where I keep random chotchkies that I bought because I thought they were clever. I hope it won't be so difficult!

Your video really resonated with me - especially when you talked about downgrading to loungewear and what if I need this in the future. I am definitely going to have to see about getting this book! I've been working on going through and organizing lately, and my next step, once I get everything categorized, is to declutter to get myself ready to move out for the first time in about six months, and the process you described from the book seems much more effective than the process I was planning on using.
