Guys! A lot of people are stressin' out about me throwing away my artwork... That's enough! Frankly I'm starting to get annoyed. 1) I'm a professional artist. I create THOUSANDS of sketches, paintings and drawings EVERY YEAR. I document and take photographs of my paintings and put them on my blog or website - so they are saved digitally. Can you imagine if a restaurant/ bakery gave away every single thing that they didn't sell? It would severely dilute the value of their items. I'm a professional artist and I run a business. 2) Yes, I DO sell some of my paintings on ebay/ etsy, but it takes a long time, and not everything sells. This is a lot of work and time. Time is money. Although it may hurt some viewers, it was much easier to throw them away. 3) Yes - I can gesso over the canvas takes time, but it creates a bumpy surface that makes it harder to paint on. I have already done this many times. 4) When the artwork is durable, and comes with a frame - I do give it to Goodwill. But not every artwork is frame-ready! Throwing away the artwork is an art statement itself. Because I threw away the artwork - 400,000+ people have seen the artwork! In addition, this controversial action has generated a lot of discussion and debate - which is what ART IS SUPPOSED TO DO! The artwork has more exposure than it could have if I weren't to throw it away and lives eternally on the web! If you dying to some some more of my artwork - you can go to my website: www.chris-chien.com or www.legendbrush.com or www.chris-chien.blogspot.com I have WAY more artwork than I know what I do with. Life is not about your possessions. To me... Life is about learning and living joyously. C'mon - lets go!

ProjectLifecoach Well said. I'm trying to start myself of the minimalist journey. In today's society of more, more, more, now, now, now, it's hard for people to understand others wanting to live with less. But ultimately, living with less gives us so much more. Less stuff = more time for the important things.

ProjectLifecoach Thanks for the video and for your comments! I just started doing this method today with all my clothing and am taking a short, well-deserved break. I applaud you for throwing away your art that was no longer appealing to you and giving yourself a chance to try something new. You can make more art! I know I'm going to be faced with similar challenges when I sort all the quilts I've made. I also appreciate that you were willing to change rules when they didn't work for you because an intuitive process should allow for some leeway based on the individual.

I know this video is light hearted and helpful but it rang very true in a deeply emotional way for me. My father is a serious hoarder. It is very bad. When I used to live at home, I was not able to clean or purge b/c he would go through the garbage and bring things back into the house. It's a more drastic version of what your mum was doing in this video. (My mom also did this too, but I didn't see it as disruptive as my fathers condition). Now that I live on my own things are much better but i could still benefit by decluttering my apartment in this way.... You have inspired me!

My parents lived through rationing in 2nd WW, so we had to eat everything on our plate and throw away nothing - clothes, toys, books, anything! The guilt still affects me when I get rid of things. I hear my mother's voice " You wasteful spoilt little hussy, some one would be grateful to have that!" Phew! It's hard sometimes!

I just went through this process on about 8 boxes of sentimental items that I had stored with my mom... we also reduced her possessions by at least a half. You're right - it's exhausting. I loved this video and your thouths about the process. I still live with my parents and ever since I learned about the existence of the book and the konmari method, I see all the stuff in our home that we don't really use, all the clutter, especially in my dad's office room. he's an architect and he has all kinds of stationery stuff as well as gadgets lying around. he has a habit of keeping anything because it might be useful someday or you never know when you'll need it. I notice a slight hoarder tendency and I noticed it in myself too. I have a hard time letting go of things for the same reasons. I plan on doing a purge in my room after i'm done with my thesis paper because tidying exhausts me, both physically and emotionally. all the suff has been here before but it's like I can see clearer now and notice it more. Great video and i'm gald I discovered your channel :)

Your video was so encouraging and helpful! I am in the middle of my KonMari purging and organizing and yes, it is exhausting. I am a 59 year old mother of 3, grandmother of 8 and great grandmother of 1 so you can imagine how long and thoughtful this process will be for me. Yet, I am gaining strength, clarity, and welcome the new joy I will have in my surroundings once I finish this process, which I have given myself the month of January to complete (I may need more time to recover in-between I think). My initial inspiration was not want to leave all of this sorting for my daughters to have to deal with one day, but now I see that I will truly benefit too. Thank you!!!!

Great job, Chris! As a holistic professional organizer, I love helping clients de-clutter and organize their homes and workspaces. I love the Marie Kondo method, although I agree with you, it's often better to do each stage in incremental steps instead of ALL at once, especially with my older clients who have decades worth of accumulation.

This is the best video on the method. I had to laugh when I saw your mom putting stuff back. Looks like my mom doing the same thing. You are amazing I watched so many konmari videos and a lot them are showing you their collections and not really showing the process of decision making. Are you going to do a follow up on how this changed environment effected you ?

+knitnpaint Nah - you have to do it again. I think Kon Mari is like "taking" a bath. You don't just take one "bath" in your lifetime. That would be disgusting. lol. but you get better at taking baths, and you become quicker and more efficient every time you do it. does that make sense?? :))

Great video! I have been having a hard time with the stopping and starting of this. The clothes part of this exercise is so easy for me. I am great at that. It's the rest of it I am not so great at. And really--when I finish purging everything, I am most concerned about keeping it that way. I am horrible at not letting it slide backwards. I really appreciated the honesty along the way about how hard it was, especially when your mom came in to go through your stuff. That is something I feel will be problematic with me, except not with my parents as much as with my husband. Excellent job, and I really liked seeing the sketch books. You do great work!

Great video, while it doesn't look like much of a difference on a superficial level, you now have bunch of empty dressers and draws. Well now you can throw away those dressers that are now empty. It frees up space in the house, so you can see more of the actual walls and it makes your place seem larger and more relaxed. I did this Kari method for my house and I was able to throw away old storage units. All my friends now love how much bigger my place seems, more welcoming and relaxed because you can see the actual walls. There's space around each piece of furniture, at least 36 in., instead of everything jammed in close together. But you have to fight your own instinct to buy more crap and fill up the now beautiful empty space.

Did you not find that this process puts a mirror to your self, causing you to see and be responsible for your own habits of accumulating STUFF! I've only done clothing and books and I feel much lighter! My husband saw all my books to discard and he wanted to take them to a resell store. I'm so thankful that I bid them a proper goodbye because I watched from a distance how they thumb through the 200 books, pull out 4 of them and gave us about $1.50 and literally threw the rest into a recycling bin!! If I hadn't been trained by the Konmarie Method, I would have had a heart attack! But I walked away thankful to their service to my life. I'm gearing myself up for Paperwork next!

This is the standard for these types of videos-in time-lapse with a narrative overview post-purge, touching on what you learned and what you can share that is helpful for others. Too many of these videos get bogged down with the participant verbally justifying to the viewer why they're keeping each item and going on about an item's history, which is not helpful in the least to the viewer. I liked how you talked about sorting the sentimental items-and being afraid of losing them. Operating from a place of fear is contradictory to the KonMari method but I understand why you were aware of feeling that way. Well done, Lifecoach!
@projectlifecoach75449 жыл бұрын
fontmaven haha nice thank you Fontmaven. Yeah - so people make a lot of excuses why they should keep their items? I can see that! Most of the people who comment on this video complain that I threw too much stuff away (mainly my artwork!) But for sure... throwing sentimental stuff away is difficult!

Great job there, congrats on completing the project! I also loved reading the KonMari method. I accomplished all my clothes and books in a few days, but did not complete the entire program. Still, I have noticed that a) what I did sort through and organized is still organized months later; and b) I have changed the way I obtain and keep things. Instead of putting things aside to "deal with it later", I force myself to make a decision right away - which greatly reduces clutter, stress and to-do lists. Thanks for sharing! The video is a bit long, but it definitely gives someone a tangible idea of what the method entails. Again, congrats!

I think my favorite thing about the KonMari method is that it encourages you to let go of things with love. When you're getting rid of old artwork, you're not saying "ugh, this was crap", you're saying "thank you for what you taught me". It takes away the bitterness of getting rid of old things and makes it easier to let go of things you don't hate, but don't love either.

Hi Chris, I enjoyed watching the full time lapse of you clean your room with the KonMarie method. It was inspiring to me. One thing that touch my heart was the beautiful artwork that you discarded. I like that you think the artwork, & I think one of the things that will be added to by people who want to expand on this wonderful method, is that there might be a place that people can go to to donate those beautiful things that possibly other people may like to have. In fact I heard a video recently where in New York a very nice hotel that in the lobby once a week or maybe more often than that people are able to go down and just trade. They just have a place where people can leave thing that they are willing to discard or give away, and other people will come and take those things that sparks joy that someone else had. This concept, because just like your mother wanting to go through your black plastic bags, it would be fun to have a place where these items could be donated. as they say one man's junk is another mans treasure. So one thing that has served a wonderful purpose in my life, for instance now has the freedom to spark joy in someone else's life.... Even if it is some of your original artwork, or sketches. It might be kind of fun to just wonder where those will end up, sparking joy in someone else's life. Just the thought, & I certainly enjoy your video that I watched today! Thank you so much for sharing.

this is great! thank you! I am a fine art photographer who works in film and having a hard time getting rid of old photos, film and my darkroom is overflowing. I will apply your methods to the whole house, garage etc...and we do not have garbage...so we recycle a lot. I am not sure I would discard all your sketches though...

I have a question for you....What if I AM the Mom who can not let go of anything ? I love my house but I realize I am slowly becoming a hoarder. I have so much stuff. I try to get organized, but become physically incapable of throwing or giving away anything. It is so hard that I give up. The best I could do is tidy up. My usual reasoning is I may need it someday or it is sentimental, or it is still in good condition why waste the money I spent to get it. How do I cure this bad habit ?????????
@Londonfogey9 жыл бұрын
+Enza Caputo We live in an age where material objects are cheaper than ever and available at the touch of a button, and information on anything is available also. Anyone under 20 years old in the west will never have known otherwise. It wasn't always like that and may not be in the future, so I don't see anything wrong with keeping objects which may come in useful. The key for me though is organisation and making sure if I keep things, I know what they are and where they are.
@Whoareyoupeople9009 жыл бұрын
I know i'm late on this but when it comes to the "what if" items. Think about the situation where you'll need this item, will that situation really ever come up or are you just making an impracticable excuse just so you can keep it? Also, think about how long you've kept the item, more then likely you aren't going to need it if it's been a long time. As for the money guilt items, you don't need to throw them all away. Anything in good condition can be donated or even gifted if it's like brand new. It wont be wasted if someone else is using and loving it. (:

For me what really helped was first getting into the habit of no longer buying new things I didn't need. I spent several years winding down my purchasing so I wasn't always bringing more new stuff into my house. I realized I was fine if I only went shopping when my clothes wore out and needed to be replaced, not every month (or more) just because. I quit buying extraneous seasonal decorations I knew I would have to try to store later. I live in a small apartment in NYC and I was already frustrated with not having enough places to put everything so I spent time putting the brakes on buying and becoming used to that. From there, I started to use up some of the things that were still in good condition and would've been wasteful to throw away, because I wasn't constantly backfilling with newer items (especially stockpiled bathroom stuff!) NOW I am at a point to get rid of all the extra junk I still have because not buying much at all has made it clear to me that I don't need as much as I originally thought. Having a taste of the peace brought on when the quantity of your belongings stays the same or slowly decreases instead of constantly, insidiously increasing is very motivating. Just something to think about and what helped start getting me into the right mindset.

I'm currently doing the KonMari Method. I wasn't even done reading the book, but I felt so inspired to discard things. I knew I wasn't doing the method right though because I was going out of order (doing clothes->miscellaneous ->books) and I definitely wasn't doing everything in one go either. So what I decided to do was go at my own pace until I finished the book. Just discard things I could see in my cluttered room and junk drawers that didn't spark. Just doing that my room got a LOT cleaner. You could see the floor again. I actually WANTED to make my bed and fold my laundry (and laundry was my absolute least favorite chore) because I wanted my room to stay neat. It made me happy which is what the KonMari method is all about. Now that I've finished the book I'm doing this method properly and I'm really enjoying it. This was an awesome video because I could really relate to a lot of the things your were saying.

Taking things to the trash is a waste really . Better to donate to refugees , sell and give the money to a reputable charity , or give to other parts of society that need them . Maybe shelters and orphanages .

I could see that you really put your time, energy and emotion into this - you referenced the book wonderfully, while also showing your own input and initiative. The concept is so simple, but it makes perfect sense to let it go if it's not making you happy and enriching your life. In making some initial reorganising tasks, without putting the entire method into practice, I was surprised by how much I held on to as almost a kind of 'punishment' - cards, letters, pictures that reminded me of heartbreak, sadness or bad choices. And it's liberating to get rid of them! Thanks so much for sharing your journey with it!

+ColliCub Omg! i totally relate to holding on to things as almost a kind of 'punishment' - cards, letters, pictures that reminded of heartbreak, sadness or bad choices. It certainly IS it's liberating to get rid of them. It's almost silly that we kept those things, now that I look back! haha. :) great job!!

This is a great video! I've listened to Marie Kondo's book as an audiobook and was happy to see someone go through the process. I wanted to see how others do it in hopes it would give me motivation. I really valued your honest commentaries, for example the part about the tennis racket and your sentimental cleaning. It helps to show some of the things we will face, like you said. I also really appreciated the time lapse. It is truly mind-boggling when you realize how much stuff we all have, and I really want to minimize that because the idea of having so much stuff stresses me out--all the money and space wasted, all the "bad" decisions or lack of a decision I've made. Great job in making this video. I'm sure it was a long and exhausting process.

thanks glad you liked the video! I'm sure you will learn about yourself during this process. I'm actually doing konmari for a second time right now. :)

You tired ME out just watching!! I did something similar a few months ago with clothes, but I like how you sorted other belongings as well. I have not read the book, but I see some value. I know some people don't have the luxury of discarding a lot, as they don't have much, but it really is good to keep pieces/things that make one happy. It will show in one's spirit. Thanks for doing this. You are the first male perspective I have seen thus far.

Thanks for doing this, man. I read Marie Kondo's book and had started tidying my own stuff. My husband has shown significant interest. He's very much into the idea that emotional attachment and sparking joy can be a valid reason for keeping something. He is also an artist and I'm going to be sharing this video with him, as I think he'll grok the method better from the way you present it.

Noël Figart oh for sure! I think most of the youtube videos are made by women - i think men will be more open to the method if a guy is doing it. hope he tries it out!

This was an excellent review of the Konmari method. I don't think I've seen one so interesting. I also loved the part where your mom came in and was so emotional... letting go can be hard not just for the person who feels they need the change, but also the people around them. Great job! Subscribed!

Your mom,though! too funny. I come from 2 generations of hoarders and they'd interrupt my cleaning process without fail to protest.In feng shui it's recommended to keep books anywhere but behind you as it's representive/symbolic of people talking behind your back. At the foot of a bed, closet or living room shelf is ok.Oh and you did great-may everything you own spark joy!

Decluttering is exhausting, especially as you mentioned the emotional/sentimental items. I just finished our entire house. I'm definitely already thinking about what to bring into the home now, purchasing less and really thinking about what I want/need. I plan to go through areas like the kitchen and my daughter's playroom once every month to make sure more accumulation hasn't crept in, and to continually rotate items out!
