Ezequiel chokes (aka sleeve chokes) are totally legitimate attacks inside the guard. I've seen high level people put to sleep that way.

Thanks for showing the headlock, I got caught yesterday by a big guy lying in my guard and getting an Ezekiel choke on me and I was kicking myself afterward thinking of the options I could have done. I've been training for about 5 months and I always have trouble with top pressure from big guys but this video really helped. Going to drill these a lot so I never get caught like that again.

Haha, I'm a big guy who has done all of those...the difference is, I have never expected them to work (I know I can expect an armbar), and they never have. Also, I do them to bigger, stronger guys as well :) ! So why have I used them? Simple, really: you can't neither armbar me, nor take my back, without opening your legs (OK, the latter is possible, but most people still open them). I suck at opening the closed guard, I'm lazy, and I know that white belts like me are going to submitted a lot, so I don't mind risking another one...perfect combo ;)! Also, as I'm learning more about guard passing, I use those moves less and less. Big guys can learn, too!

lol if a guillotine is successful best thing to do sty calmif its a frontal position try taking you hand nd pus his elbow over your head, if that doesnt help the best thing to do is stay awake so breathing is the most important, opening your air way if hes choking you is important so try getting your chin down this will stop him coking youand allow you to stay calm and think of a way out as well as tiring him out.

it can be but if he gets a grip lock by grabbing his wrist or interlocking his fingers he can stay like that for awhile also if his legs are wrapped around the waist it can be very hard to get out of it, best bet is to be stronger than the other guy and less tired as well as calm

Im just curious as to why their is such a bad stamp on brute force submissions? I can get a knuckle choke on an unsuspeting opponent pretty much 90% of the time, but everytime I do it people get like frustrated... Completely ignoring brute force submissions is dangerous in my opinion. I knew a high level blue belt who, in a bar fight, ended up on bottom and got raped choked by a big bouncer. Bouncer was huge and just grabbed his neck with both hands and choked him out from inside the guard..... if it works.... then why hate on it
@PercyLeMat
@PercyLeMat 10 жыл бұрын
I can imagine a couple of reasons why. First, you simply can't teach someone to be big and strong. It isn't primarily a matter of instruction or technique, so there isn't much of a point in spending time on it. Second, winning by brute force often leads to sloppy technique, which can get you in trouble when and if you run into someone stronger or more skilled than you. My experience is that I often have a harder time gauging my own performance against smaller opponents. I can screw up in all kinds of ways but still "win" simply by weighing a smaller opponent down through sheer mass. In a related third point, BJJ is a sport. Brute force might be an asset when practicing, but it loses a bit of its edge as soon as weight classes become an issue.

Imo, belts are not that important.. Blue belts make up the most diverse amount of knowledge and usually separate responsibility of being purple. Should we ignore these techniques of brute strength? ? Of course not, but should a properly trained smaller weaker individual tap to them?.. This is where I believe this black belt is taking his stance on these type of techniques

I dare say the last think you're going to give a shit about if you're in a fight for your life is some honor of kosen... i mean gracie/brazilian jujitsu. This cult mentality has got to go. ps not realizing that brute force is an advantage if you have it, or trying to demonize it like this fool is doing here, is just as dumb as demonizing raw speed. Anyone that thinks that raw power doesn't play some factor at all levels is an idiot! power speed toughness etc all matter, and no colored belt (and what said colored belt really or supposedly means) changes factors of nature. As that one commentator said in the sakuraba vs rampage fight, when sakuraba had rampage in an armbar and rampage picked him up and slammed him 2x, 'technique is all well and good, but there come's a point where raw size and strength is all that matters'.
@kinneas
@kinneas 9 жыл бұрын
Whilst that's true. In a BJJ match the player with the best technique will always win. There's plenty of ripped white belts who can bench/squat/DL quite a good bit and get torn apart because their opponent is better technique-wise.

He's saying it all tongue in cheek. The fact is, in Brazilian jiu jitsu, the guard is a dominant position (if you bring strikes in, things change, but if you notice all the techniques in this video are counters to submission attempts). If an opponent of any size attempts a submission while in your guard, there are easy techniques that can be applied. I'm 5'8", 70kg and have applied the above techniques against guys who are almost double my size. They work, so this "size matters" comment, while true, is only applicable in certain specific positions. It's possible for a huge guy to bench press me off side control, but they're helpless when you have their back (it's actually harder for them to escape the back because they lack the flexibility). That's one example of when size does and doesn't matter. In an armbar attempt against a larger opponent, there are techniques (underhooking the leg), which negate the possibility of a slam.
@TheTuneAce
@TheTuneAce Жыл бұрын
The problem with these is that it's never a cross collar choke. It's an Ezekiel or a punch choke where they're on their feet stacked all the way into your head with their head down. No chance you can make space for an armbar. And if you start trying to work for a back take, they just abandon, reset, and do it again lol

to be fair though, collar chokes from inside guard can be a good faint if you're on top of a guy with a really tight closed guard. I'd never go for one with the intent of choking them out, but it can be a way of causing a distraction so the guy on bottom doesn't get the freedom to work his guard game uninterrupted.

4:18 Why not just insert butterfly hooks and sweep him instead of doing all that work? You're already on your side and you have the means to do so since he is driving his weight forward which would mean that his base would be weak therefore making him easy to sweep regardless of weight difference. I'm 145 lbs (I cut down to 125 lbs when I compete) soaking wet on a good day and I hit that sweep on BIG dudes EASY all the time, gi and no gi.

No that kimora defence is not right. 'shoulder lock' bringing it closer to your hip means giving them more leverage. This is not a sustainable defence. Sorry but not buying it. No one will let that wrist control go that easy just because you turned your hips.

Well, top "control" from inside guard is problematic because that's what "guard" is all about, control from the bottom. Once you pass guard to at least half then you've got something. When you say "decent" guard passes, I'd say that the basic ones are the best and if you just keep working them, they work the best. Be very aware of the moment that the guard changes from open to closed or from one form to another, these you need to exploit because that's when your opponent is weakest.

thats is true to an extent. If all you drill americanas from inside the guard chances are you will catch a lot of inexperienced grapplers with it but anybody that knows what they are doing and even occasionally drills arm bars will recognize the crossing your arm over situation and immediately go for the armbar. You have to remember that the person whose guard you are in is in the dominant position so you should try to escape their guard and move to a more dominant position before attacking.

Cool story bro. In judo if there is no signifigant action for 3 seconds the ref will stand you back up. I have been practicing judo for about 12 years and I have won most of my matches on the ground. If you want to keep the action on the ground and uke wants to stall a leg drag is too slow. Judo is fast and dynamic, BJJ is technical and methodic. Choking someone in their guard works. There is video evidence of this, and I am telling you it is popular and effective even if you are not bigger.

I think ezekiel choke is a bit better from the guard. There was one ex-judo guy who did it to me once. I assumed that it would be easy to defend, because I was on the bottom guard. But it was on so fast that the superior leverage provided by my legs was of little use. It was quite suprising, because you don´t expect to be choked from there. Then again, I was white belt, so defence might actually be easier than I thought.

I wish I saw this last week! I have been training for 4 months now and I was sparring this guy who was in his first month. He did the headlock thing from guard. Now I assumed it was gonna be like a stall move or he was gonna eventually move on to something else or something so i figured I'd try and wait it out, wrong! He just stayed there pressing his shoulder into my face. I eventually pushed his arm up and put him in the arm triangle position from bottom and worked for his back.

A-sometimes you need to be faster or not get into bad position B- the game is keeping the distance with your legs and body while he got the first hand in the collar C- you can still take the armlock - depends on your level,position and ability to roll on your stomach D- its always hard to catch big and strong guys on armlocks - chocks are better! good luck

And let's be clear, the reason not to use strength in training is so that when you come up against that rare guy, bigger stronger and faster than you, you still have the same chance. If you're in a real fight for something genuinely important, use your strength, just don't use it to your own detriment.

*continued* You are much better off with standing up, opening the guard, passing with a leg drag or leg weave, maybe spin to the back if they go to their knees. But trying to sub someone in their guard that is good, will just result in you annoying and maybe hurting them in the processes, them getting angry and choking you extra hard. *Insert True Story meme here*

yeah see unfortunately you are not a master LOL. My fellow grappler, you can understand why the little black belt in the video shows his frustration towards big guys like you, because while you go for these moves with strength, it hurts us, and on someone who is good/legit it won't work, but just hurt us or "give us colliflower ear".

An ezekiel choke or amasso pao are not "ideal", but they make the person on bottom react and move. I wish I was a master like you so I only needed to use moves when they are ideal. I like the move, and I am rarely bigger or significantly stronger than the people use it on. It makes the person on bottom work and open up, so I can pass.

A lot of BJJ teachers do use the Japanese names. It is just easier for English speaking people to understand when they make their own English version of the technique.. When it is said in Japanese, everyone will have a hard time remembering what it is since they don't know what any Japanese word actually means. We can break X-Choke down easily since we speak the language...

submissions CAN be done from inside someone's guard. common, no, but possible and not always bad technique. there's a bjj vs judo video on youtube where a judo black belt chokes a bjj black belt unconscious in a tournament with an ezekial from inside the bjj guy's guard.

Right, which is the absolute best way to do it. But depending on the position of the person attempting a submission, "X-Choke" can mean something else, if you were on the back vs a choke from the guard. It's the MMA type people IMO.. not BJJ people. But they both are guilty to an extent.

not effective at a high level of BJJ, maybe in judo but not in jiu jitsu. its effective at getting you countered same as the kata-gatame position; good in judo, no so in Jiu jitsu and mma

I caught a "big guy" with a can opener submission the other day at training. i think this is more of a novice issue than a "big guy" issue to be fair.. Great techniques though.

I'm 6'3' 300 lbs and dont feel like I was built for jiu-jitsu but have done it for 4 years now and developed my own style. Being big doesnt mean you have to be looked at as a bully.

like your vids but this kid is making a huge mistake thinking he is just gone slide out from under a bigger guy especially thinking he can arm bar him that's hilarious I could give him my arm straight and he wouldn't be able to hold it much less straighten it on his own

As a 5'5" guy with 7 months in, I get these a lot from brand new white belts. I rarely tap to them, but I rarely get out, either. I need to use my legs more I think.

lol that video is the worst example of a BJJ black belt. I have hit this as well, but it's only when a white belt is gassed and not paying attention.

You just need strong hands. If your just starting in judo you are going to need strong hands for everything. Work on that grip strength and stick with it!

Get a higher mount? Pull his arm off..push your forearm into his throat until he lets go..I dunno. It's weird when people attack from being mounted..lol

I've seen a Brazilian BJJ black belt get submitted by the collar choke from inside his own guard by a BJJ white belt/Judo guy. It can happen.

then again though, if the guy is just too heavy and knows how to use his weight eg a 140kg purple belt, then these attacks are ideal ;)

Not everyones a black belt in BJJ, so to ridicule people and get mad is a touch obnoxious. Its a good video but i see why some disliked it.

For the second one, if you don't get your head out and the guy on top controls your arm, it can easily turn into a pass to kesa gatame.

1:15 how much difference in bodies can be in order to apply this. because he has a strong opinion and martial art is to be humble. he cannot take Stefan.. that was a presentation and we never have the oponent make a move.. he can do with a dummy doll

Lol. A white belt tried the gi choke inside my guard so I just scissor swept him and let him tire himself out. Dumb and damgerous

He's talking about countering 'dumb' big guy moves, which you're probably not going to be seeing at the black belt level.

Thats bullshit. If a big guy sinks in an american you're not gunna be able to weasel your little ass arm out of it.

This is more like white belt attacks, not big guy attacks. It's not like big purple belts resort to bad techniques.

I thought the same untill i saw the video, the guy in white seems a touch obnoxious. Stephan would never act that way.
