Would you like to learn how to design effective and engaging scenario-based eLearning experiences? 👉 Get the free Become an ID checklist: www.devlinpeck.com/become-an-...
In this video, we’ll dive into the full eLearning design and development process that I’ve used to secure high-value client projects. And I’ve helped people in the bootcamp use this process to land some of the most competitive instructional design opportunities.
Much of the eLearning that you may have seen is designed more like an information-dump than an engaging, story-driven experience. This process will help you design immersive learning experiences that capture people’s attention and help them perform better on-the-job.
In addition to helping your audience, you can use this process to create a portfolio project that will help you stand out in the market.
The step-by-step eLearning design process is:
1. Identify the Need: Determine if there is an opportunity for improvement
2. Create an Action Map: Map out the actions you want people to practice.
3. Write the Storyboard: Create the text-based blueprint for your eLearning experience.
4. Design Visual Mockups: Design the visual layout for your eLearning experience.
5. Develop a prototype: Develop a prototype for your project.
6. Develop the Final Product: Complete the final product.
I’ll also discuss how you can add moments of delight and help enhance transfer for your audience.
Throughout the video, we’ll explore portfolio projects where people have used this eLearning design process effectively.
To explore these portfolios and projects for yourself, visit the showcase: www.devlinpeck.com/showcase.

As always, this is well worth the time to watch. I'm so glad I ran into your content several months ago. I tried putting together a portfolio piece by building it directly in Storyline, but as you mentioned, I lost alot of time redoing and reiterating. How much easier it would have been if I had started with Adobe XD to build. Even better if I had started with a text based storyboard or a mind map to outline my thoughts. (In the process I learned alot about cool features of Storyline as I was trying to demonstrate my ability to use all of them in one project, but I'm not sure how coherent the finished piece was. I too would be interested in image packs.

We've all been there, Laura. It is tough to figure things out on your own (I even built some of my early client projects in Storyline directly...results in a lot of rework as change requests come in down the line). So yes, please learn from my mistakes, lol. This process irons out a lot of the inefficiencies and works really well for clients (I would seek approval on text-based storyboard, interactive prototype, and then final product). Finally, thanks for supporting the content. We're glad that you're here :)

Great question. I suggest using this process for one project (the flagship project), and you can have smaller deliverables to bolster this. The benefit of showing off this process and creating a deliverable like this is that it shows off the full scope of your ID skills (especially in-demand ones like solving real-world problems with ID and using Articulate Storyline).

Hi Devlin and all! I am a New Delhi-based curriculum developer. I specialize in elementary education and sociology of education and have been working with government organizations and NGOs for a couple of years. Now, I intend to switch to the profile of an instructional designer. I have been reading, watching videos and also intend to build a portfolio. However, I have three major queries. a) Should my portfolio samples be general or specific at this initial stage of the switch? In other words, should I restrict it to elementary education work samples or include samples that cater to the need of corporates, include other topics, etc.? b) Should I prepare for the role in terms of what industry needs or what I can offer? If both, how do I strike a balance between these two? c) Are South Asian people often viewed as ‘cheap labourers’, specifically in the freelance space? (I intend to work with people across the globe while residing in India.) I would highly appreciate it if you all could share your response to the above-given questions. Thanks in advance!

Hello, and good questions! I will do my best to answer: 1. You should try to cover a wider range. If all of your projects are related to elementary education, it may send the message that those are the types of roles you're aiming to work in. 2. Both! The process outlined in this video covers a lot of the bases that companies are looking for. 3. I am not sure about that. If you position yourself well and have a strong portfolio, then you will be able to demand premium rates.

I finally was able to get into this a bit. I've been enjoying it, and imagine I'll watch it a couple more times just for my sake. I'm curious, you said you were charging $25k USD for one of these 10-question scenarios, is that correct? What is your timeline/turnaround on something like that on average? I was shocked to hear you say $25k+ USD, to be honest. :P

@nosh-kami

 @Devlin Peck Interesting, so you spend a total of 40 hours, do you outsource some of the work, then? I'm curious, since you said "on your end", or do you mean there is other work on the part of the client? And, yes, I know you love project pricing, and I definitely see why! Although, the stuff you create brings incredible value. So, now that I say it, I'm not sure why I was "shocked!" It was more just hearing $25,000+ USD. I was like, my god that's half my salary in 2021, you know? LOL! (And yes I had to switch from my professional account to my personal. I had no clue!)
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 жыл бұрын
@@nosh-kami Yes, I typically outsource some development and illustration (runs around $1k-2k). And the project could get done in a couple of weeks but you have to rely on SME availability and client review cycles. And with how much work you do I thought you'd be making 3 times that!! Haha. But I know you are happy with your company :D

Would a scenario based eLearning experience come after an informational training so that the participant knows how to navigate the scenarios based on what they've learned?

With this approach, we bring people right into the action and let them "pull" information (instead of pushing it on them). That being said, many clients / teams do weave together a mix of info-based and scenario-based like you mentioned. Good question!
