As a teenager, I am a Victim/Veteran of the rubber cooler hose method of destructing a Turbo 400. Much like any other traumatic method of learning...You only do that once. At 68, I still have the car (1970 El Camino), 46 years and counting. Wish the internet and your videos were around back then, you would have saved me all that heartache. Thanks, and better late than never.

We did participate in Sick Week and did have problems with our th400 so in the quest to learn everything I can about them that’s how I stumbled on to your channel. I appreciate the simple explanation of how everything works and we’re going to fix it ourselves to be self reliant on these drag and drive events. Reassembling video’s to help get things right are very appreciated and yes we’re running mid 8’s in a 3700lb 3rd gen so you know what kind of power it takes to get there.

My brother had a 400 come apart big time yesterday. Doing a burnout in 3rd gear. It absolutely exploded. Incredible carnage. Beat the heck out of the car. Ripped the bellhousing clean off of it. Input shaft pointing up at an angle. Tailshaft busted off with what I believe is a clutch drum hanging out the back of it. Bent a gforce crossmember. Messed up the flywheel, ripped the oil filter off the engine and broke the block on his fresh $14000 Sbc. Torque converter was laying on the ground like you set it there and the remnants of the transmission was turned sideways laying on the ground. “1000hp” 400 from a local shop. Not sure what caused it so not pointing any blame but it sure is impressive.

15:20 Oh man , i just finished a cooler install and used AN fittings and hose for it all, i hate that clamp and go fuel line trash. This was a "kit" with an adapter, and a couple of hose barbs for 3/8 hose. The adapters were drilled for 1/8npt, and by eye the 1/8npt to -6 aluminum adapters i got had a horrendous restriction compared to the brass, and even that was marginal. I got some 1/4npt to -6 fittings and drilled and tapped the adapters for 1/4"npt. I got some flow back that i think would have been missing. Not a bad idea to check any kind of fluid flow circuit, and see if you can do a little "porting" so to speak. It couldnt be happier as im seeing average drops of 70 degrees and it even shifts nicer now. I wasnt gonna be that guy on the roadside with a piece of blown out rubber hose ✌️

Late 80s and a buddy got a 350$ 79 Impala wagon ,i think it had a 305/th350 if i recall. Anyways, one day we are rolling along about 45 on this back road that has that greasy tar all over it which is great for burnouts and leaving long stripes. He goes,watch this, and shifts it into neutral, blipped the gas and whacks reverse and boards the pedal😂 One spinning tire to stop your forward motion from 40-45mph takes 4-500 feet in case you were wondering 😂 Be sure to let it one wheel peel in reverse till it hooks ,and dump it in 1 and it leaves 5 feet of rubber 😂 We did that probably 5 times a day for most of the summer ,and the old girl got so tired it wouldn't rev to 3500 in neutral from floating the valves so much. Trans hung in like a champ.

Just completed assembly and conversion of a 4x to 2x th400. Problem, the output shaft is damn hard to turn counterclockwise, as you look at it from the rear. Won't turn clockwise.... Normal, or do I need to pull,it apart and double check clearances? All clutches are fully bottomed out and front pump seated. I Can turn the input shaft easy. Your videos have been a great tool for me.

Have a number of transmissions to identify that have been stored many years. I want to clean exteriors without removing any ID info. At least 5 should be th400 and 5 possibly th350. 3 Torqueflites and 2? 1 th400 done by Russell in NH 1th350 done by Pinard others were not bad but removed as I parted out vehicle they were in. Now they look pretty bad but am thinking correct cleaning agent will let me at least figure out which is which. And make more presentable.They should all be rebuildable. Several may be good to go after cleanup. Will paint with Aluthane most likely once cleaned an ID'd. Thanks Keith

When i was running a C4 when i did a burnout i would go from 1st to 3rd nearly as soon as the tires rotated(manual vb) so would that save second gear issues with a th400? With no load in the waterbox you start in second and shift to third then drive out to avoid damage. There is a load with minimal spin off the starting line. It is the No load free spin that hurts the transmission on a 1-2 shift.

This may sound anal but you appear to be part of the group that continues to call a roller clutch a SPRAG. A sprag was invented by Borg Warner and the name itself designates it as being with the "figure eight" elements. There is no such thing as a "ramp style sprag". A sprag is a sprag, and a roller clutch is a roller clutch. There is also a mechanical diode. They are all one way clutches.
@mountainsgarage
@mountainsgarage 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the word sprag was in the dictionary long before Borg Warner came along. Among the group is General Motors, who regardless of style referred to either as rollers or sprags depending on the manual page. They also refer to the ramps of the roller style, also calling them teeth. Fun Fun!

@@mountainsgarage Not going to argue with you about this but I am right. I have researched this many times. I didn't just pull it out of my arse. I also have many GM manuals and a quick check in one area they describe a transmission as having a "sprag(or in the case of older models, a roller clutch)". Exact wording. Here is a quote from a bearing design firm. "Ramp & roller clutches are used for applications with low-to-medium overrunning speeds and for indexing . Sprag clutches are the choice for applications with high overrunning speeds and for backstopping . When the outer race is the driving member, this is the resultant race activity." Many more examples available by Google search. If you have the ATSG Upgate Handbook for the 700R4, check the 1982 changes. Here is what it says. "Beginning on May 3, 1982, a new forward sprag clutch entered production, replacing the forward roller clutch on all THM 700-R4 transmissions." So I repeat - a sprag is a sprag and a roller clutch is a roller clutch.

Complete gibberish to me. Why won’t you put any of this in Laymans terms, not all of us know what you’re talking about and we’re trying to learn. This was extremely confusing are you telling us to never shut our engine off or allow it to turn off when the vehicle is moving at a high rate of speed? And if it does we’re probably going to die due to some uncontrolled explosion inside the transmission? Why can’t you do a burn out in first gear also what happens if you blow the tires off from the starting line? I’m not trying to be a dick but I really don’t understand what you’re talking about
