Josh you're the man! Lots of DMax KZbinrs out there but their channels are mostly about trying to entertain us with their day-to-day lives and pumping their merch. You create the perfect mix of entertainment, merchandise and REAL information and education about our trucks. I enjoy watching you work on your truck, showing us the do's and the dont's and the mistakes that you've made as well. I follow a handful of guys but you are #1 on my list buddy! 👍

By mistakes of course I mean the pitfalls and situations we can run into, and those things that you wish you had done differently sometimes. You keep it real world. Most of these guys on KZbin don't even work on their own trucks and when they do they edit everything out to be nice and smooth which is not reality in most cases. You rock brotha! Oh... also trying to keep the wife comments to a minimum so as not to be creepy Lol. But, WOW.... 😁

GM has a service bulletin out on this it’s commonly known as a “type writer tick” here’s a little tid-bit explaining that the noise is resonated from the crank journal bearings. Although injector ticking is an issue the issue you’re hearing is from your oiling system and engine vibrations/harmonics. “This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanical typewriter. This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when, in fact, it was masked by other noises in the past. Many manufacturers such as Isuzu, Hino, Mitsubishi, and Nissan report a similar condition in their diesel engines. Testing and engine teardowns with this condition reveal no condition that would affect reliability or durability of this engine.”

And certain brands of oil will make the tick louder and smow make is quiter, and it most of the time comes from the passenger side, according to dmax forms , just live with it

Mine developed the typing tick after my last oil change, so I went on my diesel truck forum and posed the question lots of answers but the one that was most common was "do nothing after about a thousand miles it will go away or quiet enough that you can't hear it". and that was the best advice because it came out to be true after about a thousand miles I didn't hear it anymore. So with my lastest oil change, its back, I guess I'll be annoyed for another thousand miles...
@ipotch15 жыл бұрын
Ive got an LBZ with the type writer tick. When I first got the truck I was running Rotella in it and the tick would stick around for about 1,500 miles after an oil change. I switched to amsoil 15W-40 Marine and Heavy Duty Diesel Oil. I rarely get the type writer tick anymore after oil changes and my amsoil dealer was explaining to me the Marine oil is cheaper and has better engine benefits because it doesn't have to comply with all road laws. Don't quote me on that, its what my amsoil dealer was trying to explain to me and it made since to me so I listened to him. Do your own research.

Josh, Im a big follower of your videos and I recalled this video from a few years back. I stumbled on a video from @CruisinWithKevin where he had the typewriter issue but solved it with Mobile oil. Context, Ive tried every expensive oil out there and even purchases a set of spare heads to rebuild at my leisure. I tried this out today, and after YEARS of going nuts… it unbelievably worked. Ive even tried Mobil Delvac 1 which is pricey but without luck. I drove 30 min on Mobile Turbo Diesel Truck oil today and it literally halved the typewriter noise. Crazy
@quinncoppernoll55114 жыл бұрын
This is pretty helpful and a huge relief, my lmm has recently started to tick but it was after I changed the oil today. It makes sense that that it is the oil and that there could be some air in that synthetic oil making that tick. The tick goes away in my truck after it has warmed up. Thanks again for the info definitely helped a lot

I got the tick immediately after switching to Amsoil. If you use it, don't expect your noise go away. I used Delo before and didn't have any noises ever. I'm going dump it and try Schaeffer's synshield. I know a guy who had this issue with a few Fords. Schaeffer's immediately stopped the ticking on both trucks. If that doesn't work, it's back to the big box of Delo at Costco.

It’s me agin Shannon the one swapping the lml. Well just put it all back together yesterday and driving about 200 miles today for work. Low and behold I got that exact sound now and I was thinking crap I just put this engine in. Well the little unplugging truck just confirmed I have a bad injector. Much better than a whole other engine. I was so pissed when I heard the noise today. I’m going to snag one of the old injectors off the old engine and replace the one that quit tapping when Unhooked.

Just FYI, all Duramax 6.6 engines have a tick or "typewriter" ticking noise. It comes from the crank journals, usually at lower to mid rpm. There are GM service bulletins that explain this. Changing oil brand and or viscosity can quiet this some, which may be what you are experiencing with the Hot Shots oil treatment. There is no "FIX" for the Duramax tick.
@johnduggan9292 Жыл бұрын
Nailed it. Oil is huge. I have had 2 duramaxs one lb7 and an lbz both click… harmless. The less u listen to the clicks the better. I have put 200000 miles on both trucks. When they stop fixem otherwise drive em. 😅

Quick tip from an Old Wrench for finding exhaust leaks: !!REMEMBER, SAFETY FIRST. USE YOUR BURN RESISTANT SHOP GLOVES!! Wet down several shop towels that have been rolled together and grab them with long nose or vise grip pliers. With the engine running, carefully press the wet towels against the area of the exhaust manifold or pipes that you think may be leaking. If your suspect area IS leaking, the towels will quiet it down until you pull them away. BE CAREFUL. This is a trick I used to find exhaust leaks, and yes, I burned hands and arms while doing it. If this manner of diagnosis is beyond your comfort zone then don't do it. Skin melts fast!

Try Enerburn. It's a fuel additive. 1 OZ for every 75 liters of fuel. It really works for eliminating any carbon deposits by making the fuel burn complete. It is formulated for engines with EGR systems, but having no carbon coming out of the valves reduces carbon knock. I've tested this for hundreds of thousands of miles. It really works. I've never had to force a burn.

Hey Josh. The timing of this video couldn't be better. My 08 GMC Sierra 3500HD Duramax Dually just started ticking today. I did an oil change 3 days ago. I added the hot shot's secret stiction eliminator the full 64oz bottle in place of 2 quarts of oil then added to the tank hot shot's secret diesel extreme and everyday diesel treatment. I wonder if all this additives I did contributed to the ticking. Meaning is the oil viscosity not thick enough now. Great videos as always. Thank you.

my 08 lmm has the tick after every oil change until I put about 500 miles on it and it goes away completely and I run Valvoline super blue 5w-40 with OEM filter

Good point that very well could be it but give it a few hundred miles it might go away

With a good quality oil duramax don’t need any kind of oil additive, the stiction eliminator is primarily for 6.0 power strokes given that they are a split shot HEUI fuel system. Meaning that they use high pressure oil to pressurize the injectors. In this case the hot shot secret stiction eliminator is of good use. A duramax is a common rail injection system, totally different ball game. Fuel treatments can be useful however their are a lot of them that do nothing at all. Check out opti lube XPD. That’s what I use in house on customers vehicles as well as my own. Hope this helps.

Just starting my build and need some advice. should I get one of those Launch CRP429's or is it better to have an Edge Products 84130 Insight Monitor? Also, can any of these do the EGR delete code for me? Love the channel!!

Can you make a video with your scanner how to get to that screen on the obd scanner to check the balance rates
@chachifeere5 жыл бұрын
its got to be ticking for a reasonIf you have a starting problem after it’s the flex plate where the trans and motor meet. Same this with my HD gasser. Fixed the problem not runs so quite sounds like electric truck, or the lifters

My problem is 2015 3500 had engine light on for injector #4 witch was +5 so I changed it ,light went away now have knock or tick . Checked rates now reading -6 with new oem injector. When I rev engine it goes away. Did the code change. I heard that doing a balance test will make it go away . Any ideas?

I had that same ticking noise all it was, was the injector barely loose and It was misfiring out of it pulled the injector out clean it put new copper washer and O-ring put it back in solving the problems if you look around the injector and see black that’s the signs of it misfiring out of it

I'm buying one from a person in Owasso the rockers are not to bad to replace. You could do yours. Just saying
