Nice simple diagnosis EZ. I can’t wait to see what you do. Since this is a duramax diesel it would be an interesting rebuild. But all decisions come down to cost and what makes the most sense.

Dealer shops (doesn't matter if it is Ford, Chev or Dodge) have "Technicians" not Mechanics. They are not problem solvers nor does the shop pay them to be. If they can't plug it into a computer to be told what the problem is and what needs to be replaced forget it. That is why once my vehicle is off warranty I will go to a private shop where you find "Mechanics" who like yourself can problem solve. Love your channel and thank you for your time and effort that you put into every episode. Happy New Year and all the best for 2022.

Your troubleshooting techniques were spot on. Always do the easy things first like you did. With glow plugs cylinder compression is simple unlike my dodge with the grid heater, and then just change the oil which doesnt hurt anything. I dont know if the dealer would even do that to determine internal engine damage. Good video and smart advice, your gonna run out of things to fix.
@mikeshultz10072 жыл бұрын
I have worked on thousands of duramax engines when I worked for Gm as a master tech. 300 psi is the minimum compression for a lly duramax. The cheapest way to get that truck back on the road is to find a core engine that had a relatively minor failure, I bought a lbz a few months back that spun a rod bearing for $800 as a complete engine with turbo and injectors and it had 140k miles on it. I was trying to get a truck back on the road as cheaply as possible so I bought a used crankshaft and one connecting rod and I had the crank polished. I went ahead and did a 99 cent rebuild on the engine by dingle ball honing the cylinders and slapped new rings on the pistons. I was in a similar situation as yourself with that truck and I thought it would be better to start with a lower mile engine.

nice truck i hope you decide to fix it,dealers can be bandits and i have a saying if the shop/garage is not busy dont use them as they tend to create jobs that dont want doing just to keep going,last time i heard a tapping like that it was a dropped valve on no1 cylinder on a 4.0l straight six rolls engine.

It's all a matter of 'how much time' will he have to invest. If he's doing this his Pete and/or Mack will not be moving making him money. Although, with the price of used pickups the way they are, he might, and I mean might, make a profit. So, a long block, might be the way to go. Best wishes from the far North.

Well Ezera here we go again, no start light on Duramax, there is a squidgy line, when that goes out start the engine, there will be a pause as the computer checks everything out. I highly recommend a lift pump, Air Dog or Fast both are pretty much the same, we have a 2008 GMC Duramax and run a Air Dog, also whatever you decide on the driver's side fuel rail at the very back there is a plug with a spring on it, pull that sucker out and then just block the fuel rail off with a plug, long story not enough room here to explain, except it's a long trip towing a RV trailer from Bosie Idaho to Oregon at 35 miles a hour.

Enjoyed the video. GM shops are a disgrace sometimes, not like they used to be for sure. I think there are some really good mechanics too but GM and the dealerships themselves don’t want them to find out the root causes, especially if it’s going to take a little work. I think it’s all about numbers sometimes. Anyway, good diagnosis Ezrider. Take care and be safe on the road!
@Ezrider3592 жыл бұрын
My point was it wouldn't have taken them much work to determine if he was looking at a major or minor mechanical issue so a guy can make a more informed decision. But seems how it wasn't as simple as plugging in there scan tool they didn't want to do it. That's pretty disracefull if you ask me.

Good luck on that duramax. I had a 2003 and i owned it from new for 8 months it spent more time at the dealership for pouring doesel.imto the crankcase from day one. The dealer couldnt figure it put amd they gave me the option to get another Duramax powered dually or a 6.0 gas amd i told them i wanted oit and they put me in a equally optioned gas powered 1 ton. I got very lucky because i had already bought 3 trucks from that dealer amd they wanted to keep me coming back. Will not ever own another one. I had a work truck with a duramax in it and it was junk too. Great power for a diesel but they just dont hold up

380k miles of commercial service before a major mechanical issue with the engine is pretty good in my book for a light duty diesel. iv had a few in the past without any major issues, all trucks of every brand have there own sets of problems. but i wouldn't say these "suck" its more pick your poison cause anything mechanical can and will eventually break.

I've read a lot of comments on here bashing dealerships and trashing people we don't even know. It would be interesting to me to find out exactly what the dealership told your friend. I feel, if they said that the bill would be $5k for them to open the engine and fix 'whatever', that is them giving him an estimate for a 'ballpark' price. They work on these things every day and get a feel for what the 'average' bill would be. Our society has, in my opinion, become quick to judge others and place blame where it may not be warrantied. I think a more disrespectful repair place, would know you friend is on the road, away from home, trying to make a living, so them 'jumping in', opening up his engine, running up a massive bill he was not expecting and disabling his truck in Idaho would be worse. Then he would be stuck paying hundreds of dollars to even get his truck back, making his decision much more difficult. Yes, your diagnosis found some seemingly 'terminal' evidence that there is an internal issue relatively quickly and you should be proud of yourself but, as you pointed out, it would not have changed your friends situation or the outcome.
@cullenmiller81702 жыл бұрын
Well, the first mistake he made was go to the dealership. Depending where in Idaho, but in the Boise area there is Smith Detroit. They are good people and honest. A friend of mine uses them and he owns a trucking business. They have saved him thousands of dollars multiple times. I don't know if you can get the oil pan out to look at the bottom end to help figuring out how bad the engine is?
@ncut55472 жыл бұрын
The driers side is easier to get the cover off than the passenger side I've worked on them a little bit and they are not the best but the engines are pretty good on the most part ...with that low compression I would think valve train or maybe rings but it dint smoke much so be interesting to see watt u find ..

Will be a very nice truck when it's fixed EZ. What kind of work do u think a 250000 used motor might need? A rebuild will give u a little more peace of mind with the finish product. Good Luck EZ!

G'day good to see you I can't believe the the temperatures that you get I've never experienced that cold ever and to see the way it effects engines and fuel ect unbelievable. What a bloody rip off of the Chev Co I couldn't get over that it used to happen down here but the bought in tougher laws for the consumer and it has stop the real bastards in the motor industry. That is one of my favourite trucks you can't buy them here and that's got a pretty good body on it, anyway it will be interesting to see what your going to do but with all that metal floating around, it looks like a rebuild. The LLY is a good engine and worth the rebuild, but it is not a cheap rebuild. I just did one a year ago. Good luck finding a low mileage used engine. Since it is pre-DEF so I would rebuild it. Keep in mind the lower end of the LLY is a little weak imo and you may want to look into beefing it up (the kits are there). Thank you for the video and the diagnosis. Where did you get the filter opener?
@rickydavis5541 Жыл бұрын
I take the LLY over 6.0 ford diesel that need a rebuild all the time the Duramax parts go forever and aftermarket one are better built.
@TheRoadhammer3792 жыл бұрын
Ezra, I don't believe the duramax has a wait to start light. I think just the little curly pigtail indicator, for glow plug, and it's only a momentary light.
@robkittle18992 жыл бұрын
I can tell you from experience that you are going to be well over 10K for a reputable reman. Because of the hardening on Duramax Cranks, if it is scored, it is trash, no field servicing. They are great trucks, but just not cheap! I had a work truck with an LB7 that we had to put a motor in 4 or 5 years ago. Almost 12K just for the long block, plus labor and misc. That was 1 day after getting it out of the shop for a 7500 head job, which was 2 weeks after a 5k injector job. Long story short Duramax fans, if your injectors start hazing, don't drive it another 10k miles!
@Davidlabar42 жыл бұрын
A good running relatively rust free cat eye duramax will bring 20-25k with 200-300k if the miles are less they bring even more. With what has already been done plus a new motor that dually will bring over $30k+
@Ezrider3592 жыл бұрын
I don't see them sell for quite that much here miles are enough to scare a lot of people off. But repaired I'd guess it's worth 15 or so but I plan to keep it and replace my f350 with it

I'd say one way or another, you're pulling the motor. yank it out, crack it open and then decide what your going to do. It's not like you need it on the road tomorrow. You know as well as I do, that you'll end up rebuilding it, only 'cause you'll want to do it right.

That’s how shops rob us truckers. The $5,000 was basically an F off deal. There loss. My guess u can probably rebuild that truck put a new turbo on it radiator intercooler and oil cooler on it for under $10,000. And flip it for $25,000-$30,000
