This video is intended to help diagnose and repair four-wheel-drive issues that are common to Chevy Blazer, S10 Pickup, GMC Jimmy, and other GM 4WD SUVs and trucks. While there are other possible reasons why a 4WD system would not engage such as the transfer case encoder motor and computer, the possible reasons I've pointed out in this video are quite common and easiest to diagnose. The 4wd vacuum actuator is one of the easiest ways to determine where the problem is on your vehicle.

On my 2002 blazer, I was able to remove the drivers headlight and look through a hole beneath the battery tray to see if the vac module was functioning with engine running and battery in. Headlight removes with no tools, just two L brackets to pull up.

How in the hell did this design ever get approved for production? Is this supposed to be better than the 4x4 lever of the old days? So sad!

@@PitPwnyas bad as those spider injectors can be, they can also run for a long time. I think if they’re used every day they will last longer. In my experience anyway.

I have a 2005 Jimmy and just spend a lot of money with a mechanic to fix my transfer case issues. Now we got 6 inches of snow and ice and I was stuck with my 4wd not engaging. I found your video, was actually able to see this was not engaging and although I was not able to repair it where I was, it allowed me to basically block it into place and get me going. 11 years after you posted this, THANK YOU!!

You know a genuine mechanic when they tell you the about the tools, and hazards, first. They explain how parts work before they explain the problem. As a guy that likes to fix his own vehicles, I sincerely appreciate these types of mechanics. Down to earth, save you money, mechanics.

Had a question is there a spring that returns it to 2wd position? Mine locks in ok but wont unlock for about 50 miles and i tried back and forth tricks

i'm gonna tear into the actuator & cable today, i'm pretty sure the cable is seized, and going to need to be replaced. i haven't started on it yet, still too dark out, just mentally prepping... any suggestions on detaching the cable from underneath? am i'm i gonna run into problems, or snags? are there any tricks?

could be your first problem, check the hose... after I replaced the hose my 4x4 still would not lock so next I moved to the actuator, I put the blazer in neutral, switched from 2hi to 4hi as I had my friend squeeze the actuators suction cup looking thing and the 4x4 went right into gear without problem... found out my actuator was sticking and not moving freely so that was my second problem. After replacing the actuator ($50 at oreillys) and fixing the hose, my blazers 4x4 doesnt miss a beat

Your video has helped me a lot but I still have the 4 wheel blinking light issue and no 4 wheel drive. Now when I squeeze the rubber diaphragm I can hear air coming out near the vacuum actuator solenoid. Is this normal or is it a leak and it needs to be replaced? Thanks, Chad

I'm just hoping it isn't a transfer case issue, because I've gotten it to make some nasty grinding sounds when messing around with it to try and get it into 2hi. The lever on the transfer case is now in the 2hi position, but it is stuck in 4hi. I figure even if the hubs were still locked, the transfer case wouldn't be engaging the front driveshaft, so it would be in 2hi. Alternatively, can you recommend a high explosive for destroying this truck? TIA

Just engage it put vise grips on it and the transfer case will still turn it on and off. I've had a bunch of these trucks from 92 through 01 every year probably every color. Almost all of them the boot is torn so no vacuum. Pull it till front diff engages lock vise grips on so diff stays locked in. It's limited slip so doesn't hurt it. When you hit button transfer case turns it on and off. Can get little vise grips for couple bucks, and never have to worry about the stupid boot again.

had problems with my 4x4 before. this time the button switch on my dash is not lit up anymore, cant even engage my 4x4 to see what the issues is. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had same problem with mine, 1999 GMC Jimmy. Pressing 4hi or 4lo and indicator lights would blink but never lock. I have the 4 button unit so the 4x4 vacuum solenoid is on the firewall and easily accessible. Rather then pulling the battery I just pulled the vac line from solenoid that goes down to axle actuator. No vac present when pressing 4Hi, next I pulled the vac source line on the solenoid, still no vac. Traced it back to the Tee fitting on driver side. Pulled the Vac feed line going to manifold at Tee, no vac. Turns out I had a 1" gaping crack in the vac source line! Easy 15 minute, $2 fix. As a bonus my idle is much smoother too! Thanks for the video!

I have a very odd issue in my 98 s10 pick up. I disconnected it because it gets stuck in 4 wheel drive. The second I reconnect the hose it automatically switches it to 4 wheel drive. The buttons do not switch it back to 2 wheel drive. I already swapped the button mech and no change has happened. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have a 2002 Jimmy, and my problem is the 4x4 won't switch back into 2wd. I replaced that little 4x4 transfer case vacuum switch because it was siezed, thinking that was it, but then someone told me it was just for the lights on the dash switch..but i replaced it anyways. Next i looked around some more and found my cable to the front diff. case that goes from the vacuum actuator to be siezed, i tried to free it up but then it just ended up breaking, so i replaced it, but that still did not solve my problem. Any ideas on where to look or what to replace next? Some are saying the encoder motor on the transfer case, and also found some are saying the TCCM, Should I replace those?

what year is this model cause i had problems with mine i have a 90 silverado where my shifter was completly stuck so went to see my mechanic &he fixed it he said the shifter was full of rust it was seized &2 mine doesn't have that vacuum i took out my battery tray looking for it but don't have it . so anyway all it costed me was 20.bucks man was i glad...

Hello, I got a 2001 zr2 and the front axles wont engage. Transfer is going in and front drive shaft is turning but nothing to front wheels. I have replaced the vacuum lines, new diphram and new cable from diphram to front axle. I disconnected the cable end from front axle and had someone put it in 4wd and the cable pulls. Any ideas what my problem could be? Thanks

awesome! few hours ago was on my way to go bowling while there is about 6 inches of fresh snow in the road, make it outta the driveway in 2wd go to pop it in 4wd think its engaged.. no no. end up gettin stuck. gotta go diagnose this tomorrow morning and this video helped a ton because i had no idea how it worked or what could go wrong Thanks!

Hi Mark,I took the vacuum pull out from under the battery on my 1998 S10. I pulled the cable out and clamped it with vise grips. Front axle still won't engage. Could it be a bad motor that engages the front axle? This would be the part that rotates the rod sticking out of the front axle housing. Also, can I take this motor assembly off, and rotate the rod by hand?Thanks sincerely,Barry

NIce vid, grabbed an 2000 jimmy gmc, got the 4x4 to engage. but she wont go into 3rd sticking in 1st and 2nd manual gears. also seems only the front tires are spinning no 4x4 lights. so yeahh shes a project. also cant seem to get it out of sed ghost 4x4.

Maybe you can help me out... I replaced the cable and the actuator does work but when I press 4x4 I hear a click which is the cable pulling to lock the diff but my actuator does sink in all the way like yours does and I can't pull the wire out anymore... Basically it seems like the wire isn't long enough or something.. Wondering what you think about that?

Hi mark 96blazer wen i put it on four wheel (it works) it seem like when u put ur emergency brake on and try to move it . It go but somthing is holdin it from moving freely. Only hapen on four wheel

Great video! I just wanted to thank you, for all the info. I usually deal with Ford's with locking hubs. My 2000 blazer was trying to engage into 4 wheel drive while operating at highway speed. I replaced the vacuum switch and solved all problems. Thanks again!

01 gmc blazer 4.3 5 speed 4x4 .my four wheel drive will only stay disengaged if I unplug the bottom vacuum line on the firewall.

hi my 2002 s10 zr2 is not engaging in 4x4. when i put it in 4low i know the rear diff is engaging but the front is not. also When i turn on my heat to a high setting it makes a screaching noise. im guessing this is happening because i have a vacuum leak. I havent done this with the battery out yet. any input or ideas?

I have a 88 blazer and when put into 4wd, it pops out back to 2wd. Perhaps, I am doing something wrong? :9 Also, the floor 4wd diagram light stays illuminated on the 4wd low.. Even though the shifter is on 2wd. Please help.

Mark, just reviewed your video on diagnose and repair chevy blazer 4x4 issues, great video. My problem seems to be electrical though. When I start the vehicle, 5 seconds later the ATC fuse blows. I've replaced the push button assemble and replaced the TCCM module since it showed corrosion on the pins. But it still blows the fuse. Any idea of what is going on or where I should search for a bad wire? Thanks in advance

Mark, Is it possible to put too much oil in my 2000 Blazer 4WD? I did will it come out of a overflow or will I have to drain the oil out and start over? Will it hurt the engine?

Hello. I have a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer Vortec 4.3l V6 4WD with the 4-Button Switch... The 2HI, the 4HI and the AUTO 4WD works fine, but only the 4LO is still flashing and won't engage. I am in NEUTRAL or PARK to activate it. There is no click to hear. What is the problem?? Thank you very much! ;-)

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy and the 4wd tries to engage when I hit highway speeds or when traveling up a steep incline. I will hear a loud winding sound coming from the front right side. I already replaced the dashboard switch and it did not solve the issue. Any idea?

i have a bad chatter noise problem on my 97 blazer LT, front right. i changed out the wheel bearing, CV axle, upper&lower balls, sway link, and steering link, so everything is new, but still have the noise. sounds like speed bumps, kicks in and out, i was concerned about the inner spline so i did did a quick video showing it, and did a sound byte video. hoping you might be able to help diagnose my problem? here is the shaft vid; kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6nYaHabZpKmhLM here is the noise vid; kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXeoeXevh7OhgcU

awsome! thanks, Yea last summer i was mudding, got out of the woods and was stuck in 4wd for 2 months before it finally released one morning. i pulled the battery box and found a mini set of vise grips clamped onto the cable. i pulled them off, and the cable was stiff moving. cant remember it it was still engaged on the dash, but it had lots of vacuum. this morning as a desperate measure i hit the 4 hi, and the noise went away, but now i'm stuck in 4wd again, lol. this video is pretty straight forward, I'll go through the steps, and let you know how it goes, Thanks.

I got a 2000 gmc jimmy SLT 4 door 4x4, and my service 4wd light has been on the past year and a half. It starts turnin on randomly then off then finally stayed on. My 4wd buttons don't work or light up do you know what it could be? Relay,actuator, or that 15$ vacuum part?

We had a bad vac unit and fixed it but the neutral switch wouldn"t start in park but would in nneutral but now wont. New neutral switch worked but now wont allow ti start.??? WTF? Dandahermit

I replaced 4 of those vacuum switches in 4 years. I finally diagnosed the root cause on friends hoist. We traced the 3 vacuum lines, one was a vent that went up near right headlight. The factory sliced the hose installing the battery tray and the slice allowed contamination to get to the switch and it ceased up. I cut the hose below the slice and put the filter end back on. No issues for the next 15 years.

Hey Mark, great how to. I've been through mine and still having issue. Replaced dashboard switch, replaced cable and actuator. For a while it was working. However then I started getting back pressure and trans fluid pushing out my vacume lines and back into the actuator which degraded the rubber and popped two of them. As near as I could tell vacume switch failed and allowed trans fluid to somehow be moved past. Replaced Switch now, but dash has yellow 2wd light on, and no motor click no 4wd?

Make sure the gold coiled clip is secure in the groove of the pin at the actuator.

I have the 99 gmc jimmy 4x4 with 2hi, 4hi, 4lo, and auto 4wd. When I press any button it just blinks. I have a service 4wd light on dash. Can someone tell me what the correct procedure is for switching to 4wd.

had it working for about 1.5 months. Now the lights on dash go out in 2-3 seconds. Try replacing the switch

when going from 2 hi to 4 hi, cannot hear the motor. From 4 low to 4 hi, I hear it , but I think it is just going straight to 2 hi, the 4 hi light flashes and the the 2 hi lights up.

This helped me fix my 1997 4dr 4x4 blazer. It was a sticking cable going from the vacuum actuator under the battery to the front gearbox.. dripped some lube into the end of the cable and worked it a few times, then the vacuum actuator could pull the cable out again. 4x4 is working now...yahooo... thanks

Im looking into purchasing a 96 blazer with 180k and the guy thats sellin it told me it isnt goin into 4 low. He said the issue has started recently. He's asking for 2200 for it. By any chance could you give me some more info on this?

Hi Mark, maybe you can help me. I have a 1993 GMC Jimmy, about a week ago I was riding down the road and it started jerking really bad at stop lights when taking off then within about 30 minutes began jerking no matter the speed. It shut down and would start back up for about ten seconds, I have replaced the fuel pump, two relays, the fuel filter, and the O2 sensor. We have got it to the point where it will start and run until it gets heated up. We park it and go back out to crank it while it is still warm and either it won't start or it will start but will jerk. Do you have any idea what could be causing this? We were thinking maybe the distributor, but we're not sure at this point. Any help would be immensely appreciated.

***** I'm not sure. My friend is bringing a computer home to try and diagnose the problem. I am hoping that it will be a cheap fix being that I have already put $300 worth of parts in this week. I haven't heard any rattling, but my friend said that it could be a vacuum leak. Could that cause the truck to start and run fine for about 45 minutes ? But when we go out to try and crank it while the temperature is still at 210 it either won't start, or it will start and not even make it out of the driveway, then it idles down and cuts off.

I had a 94 that did this. Mine would run until it got to normal operating temp and shut down. After it cooled completely it would start again and run until it got hot. I tried many things before finding that there is a wound coil inside the distributor that goes bad, and it did not show up on any of the computer tests. The good news is the part is relatively cheap. The bad news is you have to pull the distributor to change it. This part is called a pick up coil. It is small and fits under the ignition module. You have to remove the module to even see it. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Great video..thanks for the info..I have an 03 s10 zr2.. I found that removing the passenger headlight .I was able to see the actuator and test it..without removing the battery or tray at all..I also had the transfer case seal fail also. It wasn't bad pulling out t case and replacing seals..After re doing my vaccum lines I lost track of the order that the 3 connect to the transfer case vacuum switch..The only diagram I see online is very easy to misinterprete I found that the vacuum supply and the exhaust lines were back words ..if I followed diagram..thank fully the vacuum fitting that goes on t case vacuum switch has a bigger fitting for exaust line than for the actuator line or the supply line.. when all diagrams and forums fail..Use your brain..thanks for the info

thanks alot for this video, the dealer wanted $400+ to fix it and your 7 min video and a half inch socket fixed it, I also disconnected the computer for a few min but either way the thing under the battery needed switched so thanks again bud it was very much appreciated

Thanks for the video. My blazer 4wd would only work on occasion, and it was very slow shifting between 2 and 4. I took the actuator out and it was full of transmission fluid. Turns out a shaft seal was leaking ATF from the trans to the transfer case, overfilling the transfer case. The vacuum would than suck up the ATF into the actuator. Quick fix was to change fluid on transfer case, permanent fix was to pull the transfer case, and replace the seals between the transmission and the transfer case.

Hey Mark, So i finally got around to fixing the 4x4 it was the valve, it was stuck. Now my 4x4 wont stop blowing fuses... every time i drive around for 5-10mins the lights go out on the 4x4 and the fuse is blown... everything engages fine at first and the actuator is working good! Any thoughts on whats going on ?

Thanks for the video i have a 2003 blazer that the 4x4 quit working once i removed the battery and the plate i saw the actuator was bad replaced and ready to go.Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I have a 2005 s-10 Blazer and I have been having problems with my 4x. It will shift into 4lo, but 4hi very seldom. When I hit 4hi it just blinks then changes back to 2wd.

followed vacuum line to switch on firewall, vaccum switch where line had broken. 2 minute fix, never mentioned here. :(

hello it's Danny Reynolds hear from Bedford Indiana I am curious about my 2001 Chevy Blazer 4 door 4 wheel drive I am going to check with your video has taught me on it tomorrow mother than that what is the original size tires that go on this vehicle and also all of my dash lights are on I guess is going crazy and also the fuel gauge is jumping back and forth I guess it needs a new float any ideas what I should go about doing to get this fixed and what do you think in ballpark it would cost to fix it

Danny Reynolds I used to have a similar problem in my 2000 Jimmy but it hasn't done it for a while though when it rains heavy or when it take it to the carwash the dash gauge needles go crazy and it shows empty on the gas gauge and the low fuel light comes on but in reality I'm not actually out of gas that's only happens when it gets wet.

Thank you so much for your video on the blazer and gmc 4 wheel drive trouble shooting, I have a 98 Jimmy and the vacuum hose got next to the exhaust manifold and burned in half. Sorry to ramble but god bless you are the man. If you don't already you should have your own shop.peace and have an awesome day.

I'm not very mechanically inclined but maybe you can help me. I have a 98 blazer 4x4. When I'm driving it, it does ok for a couple miles but then starts making this awful high pitched whining when I take my foot off the gas and slow down. the pitch of the sound decreases as I slow down but still very loud. It almost sounds like a siren. From what I can tell it sounds like it's coming from about mid ways of the vehicle underneath

Hello Mark, I have a 2000 jimmy and I'm having some problems. I believe my jimmy is trying to engage or disengage from and too 4x4 while I'm driving but not all the time. i found your video very helpful and have noticed that my diaphram is stuck in and it has no play at all. I took a video while I switch from 2x2 to 4x4 I can hear a noise trying to switch but there is no movement of the diaphragm and cable. I think it could be the valve?

***** Thanks for the reply.. Yes I believe you are right the 4x4 fuse is now blown so it hasn't been doing it all the time now. There is no vacuum at the actuator nor is there play in the line I believe my truck is actually stuck in 4x4 even though the light would say 2x2.. unfortunately nothing is open in my area today so I will have to do some more trouble shooting tomorrow. I figured I will buy a new valve anyways to see.

I have a 2000 gmc jimmy.When I engage the 4hi button it makes a rapid continuos clunking or shuttering noise.KInda sounds like gears just aren't quite meshing or coming together.Can anyone tell me what this might be?

I've just sort of reverse inherited a 2000 Jimmy, from my son, and have high hopes for my future relationship with the vehicle. When looking for gas sending unit replacement info, your videos were the 1st I found. Great video work! Excellent camera angles. I'm pleased to find that there is so much info about this vehicle available online. Seems to speak to what a great vehicle they are. Thanks for all your input!

When you do that cable kit to override switch can you still go into 4 low

Not only can you go 4wd low, but because you can manually disengage the front differential, you can go 2wd low.

I'm helping my wife's cousins work on his 1999 blazer 4wd his is stuck in 4 high, when 2 high button his pressed you can here the systems under the blazer making the normal sounds but staying in 4high.will not disengage...any help will be greatly appreciated...

Just replaced the 1 on my 02’ ZR2. My transfer case was engaging but front end not locking up. Quick fix, sux that the actuators are around $60 at Parts House but they come wit lifetime warranty.

I have a 1992 S10 pickup and I replaced my actuator today and now none of the 4x4 lights turn on and when the lever is in 2wd the truck grinds and pops like it’s trying to engage but it never does. I put the lever in 4 hi and it stops making noise but only the rear tires spin. No matter what I select (2 hi, 4hi, or 4 low) only the rear tires spin. I have no clue what to do. Can anyone help?

I've got a 99 GMC Envoy with the same setup I was want to know how is it ran basically on the second connector to the for the starter because my blazer does not have that my GMC Envoy been messed with by somebody else my second wire is not hooked up but my first wire is I was wondering if that's really important to hook up cuz I'm having grounding issues also

I have replaced the vacuum switch on top of the transfer case which was locked shut. My actuator pulls cable as far as it could go. I checked the 4wd indicator switch on front axle and it has power. I hear transfer case working still no wheel spin. When switching into 4wd low and hi light stays on whichever i choose. What could i do next?

i work in sears auto, we lifted the car off all four. The transfer is engaging on. The front shaft is spinning. The actuator has proper vacuum to pull cable. Removed cable end from front diff just a little. didnt completely remove. and when putt in 4wd it is engaging the rod to fork in diff. So im assuming the gear actually completely chewed off and need replacing. everything leads to that gear.

please search dorman part #600-561. Will this kit fix the gear that goes out? the washers with weird fork ends are the ones that confuss me. I dont see those in any diagrams that ive searched

Your videos are very helpful. I have a 2000 Chevy S10 4x4, and one day the passenger front tire started making a noise that sounded like hard plastic rubbing the tire tread. I got out and looked but nothing. I had a mechanic look at it and he said it was the actuator and control gone bad and it was letting the 4 wheel drive slightly wanting to engage. Another mechanic said there was nothing wrong with it and that is must be something else. It does engage into 4 hi and 4 lo. this noise also will come and go. it did it for 100 miles trying to get home, but the next morning it didn't make any noise at all. Please, can you help me? Thanks.

That vacuum switch on your transfer case it stuck and blow up my transfer case on my blazer thank god my front diff actuators wasn’t engaged

$15 where? its arounf $75 here in canada haha , so even if i hear the click when i press 4 hi and 4 lo, can there still be a problem with the vacuum switch or would it be a seized cable? it clicks at the transfer case but no suction and no movement but the cable has about a half inch of play. thanks
