Thanks Jeff for all the info you take time to do for us home mechanics. The info is priceless for me!

I suspect my fuel pump on my exc is bad. Ive just changed the fuel filter and it was well overdue. Black fuel pissed out of it. I could have bought the fuel pump for under 50 but i bought a pressure tester for 17 first as at least then i have the tool, especially if its not the issue

Jeff i enjoy your videos i am testing my sherco sef-f pump and using this vid for reference , I get 49 psi (bike not started) but it doesn't hold the pressure for over a few seconds should i be checking for split fuel lines /bad check valves? there's very little sherco info out there . thanks.

Does your bike have an issue or are you checking the pressure for no reason?

@@slaverace1 Sorry i just noticed your reply , I was checking the Fuel Pressure because my bike wont start , the sherco seems to be getting fuel to the cyl and a fat spark it seems as if it could be flooding because it will sputter with a small amount of carb spray sprayed into the intake (injector power disconnected). I have properly checked so many things. Stator , Timing , flywheel woodruff key , wiring , tps , injector tried new batt, new spark plug etc.. I was told by a mechanic that the fuel pressure should be 3 bar and doesnt need to hold the pressure but im still not sure. I have a Leak down tester as i suspect possible valve leakage if that passes ill be baffled .

I took it a step farther and built one with a T and both fittings so I can run the gauge in line and with it running.

I've heard the stock plastic in tank fuel filter can crack causing a loss in pressure. Have you seen this? Also, how common do these pumps fail? I have a 2018 500 and hopefully don't want to have to worry about it. Thanks.
@slaverace15 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had a cracked filter on one of my bikes.

@@slaverace1 Thanks Jeff, I got a metal in-tank filter to replace the junk OEM one to prevent this issue. How often do these fuel pumps fail? Is it a common problem? Thanks

Is this a common issue with the TPI? If the pressure is low what is the symptom and what potential damage that can occur?
@slaverace15 жыл бұрын
If your bike starts hard or runs poorly, this is the first test you should do. Low pressure makes the fueling lean.

My fuel pressure jumped up to 50 during cranking but quickly dropped down close to 5-10 after I stopped cranking it. It didn't hold like it does in your video. Does this indicate a cracked in-tank fuel filter?
@slaverace12 жыл бұрын
It needs to maintain pressure. Dig deeper.
@jakemaas77802 жыл бұрын
Replaced the fuel filter, still wouldn't hold pressure. Replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it fixed the issue. The bike starts and runs like normal again.

Do you recommend periodically checking this?
@slaverace15 жыл бұрын
No. If your bike runs well, ride it.
@dazaladz5 жыл бұрын
How do you check if the oil pump is working before going for a ride? Is it just plugging the thing in to prime it?
@slaverace15 жыл бұрын
You can't easily check it. Chill and ride.
@dazaladz5 жыл бұрын
That’s what I’ve been doing. Would you recommend priming it before a ride tho?

No.

@@stacksmasher SS, the majority of the seizures I've seen have been from cold seizures and lean seizures. I have yet to see an oil pump issue.
Even before disconnecting the fuel line from the rail, it’s good to have glasses on and gloves so gas doesn’t get on your hands.
@mobgma5 жыл бұрын
lol did you run the fuel pump dry or was it pumping gas?
@slaverace15 жыл бұрын
The test is for FUEL pressure, not air pressure.

@@slaverace1 I figured I would have seen some gas drip out. Didnt see any so thought that is what you were doing.
