In this video I walk through diagnosing the warm A/C in my Nissan Xterra. My issue ended up being the electric cooling fan but there are many components to the system and you should show caution working with pressurized systems.

If you lived as bit closer, i would mow your lawn, wash the dishes, clean the gutters - all to thank you for this vid - especially the electrical troubleshooting of the condenser fan connector. Took me all of 15-20 minutes to run the IPDM self-test, then ohm out the connector, and finally check for power during the IPDM self-test. Your advice/instruction was right on - and many, many thanks to you! FWIW - 2005 Frontier w/ 263,000 miles!...and still going strong!

Thank you a million. I did the auto test and the electric fan didn’t turn on nor did the AC clutch click. I have checked the fuses and relays related to the AC and all is good. My vehicle happens to be a 2006 Nissan pathfinder but it has a similar engine or perhaps the same engine from just reviewing your video. Must likely I am going to change AC compressor as well as replacing the electric fan myself. I say myself as I took the vehicle to a local auto technician to add R134a . I requested to have the AC line vacuum etc… The owner calls me after they did the work that my AC compressor is not working accordingly and that my AC condenser under the dash is contaminated and will need to be replaced. They gave me an estimate of what it will cost me to repair the AC. $2659.09. Mind you I still got charged for having the AC service. $242.00. I believe as professional technicians and using logic they should have verify if the AC needed refrigerant and check why the AC stop cooling after explaining to them the AC was working perfect and all of a sudden it stop blowing cold air. This is why I work on my own vehicle . Regardless lesson learned. But all is good I learned about the auto check.😊😊😊😊

If your a/c works fine at driving speed then there is nothing wrong with the a/c-- it shows it can function perfectly with natural air flow. Engine overheating at idle is the engine fan clutch. A sticking thermostat will stick under all conditions, not just at idle at a stop light. If the compressor was bad - they usually are seized when old-- you get no a/c. Condensor would function but without its fan, the a/c will run but not get cold. You do a really good video. I'm a former Class A tech but didn't specialize in a/c but I have learned that these Nissan fans (both kinds) have issues.

My A/C blew the high pressure discharge at the compressor. The O ring on the hose, but not the hose itself. Ordered an O ring from Nissan Parts, still waiting on it. How did I find the leak? Well , with H/L gauge set installed and the vacuum pump pulling, it wouldn't pull more than 15psi of vacuum. So, it's a BIG leak. That discharge was the ONLY place with any oil after checking every fitting. I had no idea about the test process though, that's BRILLIANT! I had to push 50psi or air into the A/C system and search for the leak using a squirt bottle filled with soapy water and hunt for bubbles. Not too bad, like any kid looking for a leak in a tube. Please don't hook anything that will push air into the A/C system. Air contains water vapor and that can damage the Compressor and Line Dryer. If you've done that then the system needs to be evacuated with a vacuum pump before it can be recharged.

My 2006 Xterra stopped blowing cold air and I jumped the gun (not doing the self test first) and replaced the fan. Welp... the fan still isn't turning. However, after running the self test, the fan did indeed turn on. My question is, does the fan turn on immediately after turning on the airconditioner? Because it is not turning on, but did during the self test. I hope you still follow up on these comments. Otherwise. Excellent... Excellent, well informed and thorough video. Cool Video, I swear they Hang the engine in the middle of a room and Build a truck around it. Those electric fans are great till they Fail, I had motorcoaches that had 11 of them on the AC condenser and when they would fail they caused all sorts of problems. Just remember with R134A to charge with the can Inverted or as a Liquid if the can says Upside down for Liquid. some of the ones from the auto store might charge Liquid right side up but I have always Used the 30 LB jugs of refrigerant. I am an HVAC guy, r134a is a Blend of different refrigerants and the blends will get off if you charge too much just using gas instead of Liquid. Have definitely enjoyed several of your videos. Thanks

A 4.0 Nissan engine can run the AC on without the electric motor running. The ECM controls the cooling fan corresponding to the vehicle speed, engine coolant temperature, refrigerant pressure, and air conditioner ON signal. If the AC refrigerant pressure is less than 230 PSI, and the vehicle engine temperature is less than 208F, the fan will not operate but you will still be getting AC air. The clutch fan even when not engaged to the engine speed draws a significant amount of air through the condenser

Very well organized and informative but at 12:51 instead of pulling off all the air intake parts wouldn’t it have just been easier to pull out the battery and run some extended leads from there to the aux fan? Obv that’s just for the direct test and clearly the way Ry did works but I figure it’s simpler to unscrew 2 terminals and run alligators or jumpers to the terminal bolts. I’ve had to do it for random unrelated things before. Ironically pulling the battery isn’t the 1st thing ppl consider although it takes up a lotta engine real estate. Even better thanks for the auto self test tip- in 6 years, many tear downs and more research than I care to admit, I never knew that’s a thing on these “older” models (still a tad younger than mine tho lol) thanks again dude!

Your video is very helpful but i need more help. Ac was fine until last year around may 2023 got it recharged, worked fine until end of march 2024 it was getting warm again and i got it recharged again. I thought it was odd as never had to recharge a vehicle again that soon. When i took it to get recharged they walked me through the process, told me they have a machine they hook it up to and removes the refrigerant, then tests the lines to make sure there's no leaks and if there are it notifies them, if not then it fills it up recharging it. When the process was done they said I'm good to go. Was nice and cold until a few days go. Now it blowing hot air. Its only been about 3 months. Found your video. When the car is running and i turn on max ac the fan doesn't run. I checked when i got home after driving around so it was heated up plus its been in 80s every day. I did the test you showed and the fan comes on during the test but not when vehicle is running. However i don't hear the clicks for the magnetic AC clutch. Checked the fuses, all look good. I did start hearing a rattling noise thenlast few months and am thinking that has something to do with it. What does it mean that i dont hear the clicks for the magnetic ac clutch? What do i do next or what else could it be? Do you have other videos you could link me to that could help 😅 😬🙏🏻🤞🏻. I'm a Single mom on a budget and im trying to do it myself and save some money. Amazing Video!! Thank you!!! I have a '07 Xterra that I had tested and charged almost a year ago. No leaks and blew cold until it was stored over winter. (It's a rear wheel model bought in CA and I moved to a wintery climate so I don't drive it in the Winter and use my AWD car instead) when I got it out this month I noticed the AC wasn't blowing cool. just warm recycled air. I haven't done the fan test yet or looked at the regulators, fuses etc. but I now know how to do it all saving my hundreds from a mechanic....WOULD the coolant leak or dissipate from sitting for 6months roughly? I did go out and keep the car charged battery-wise and ran it for several minutes once every few days during winter but never turned on the AC.......could it have leaked from sitting or dissipated etc? TY!!!! What a precise and well filmed, lit and greatly explained video. you're great at this and this is my new guide for the issue I'm having.......thoughtS?

My 06 xterra a/c only blows cold air on the first fan setting. Blows hot air on the rest. Mech. told me he thinks it's the control module. Before I replaced it I replaced the resistor under the glove box as one vid maker on here had the same issue as me and said that fixed it. No luck here. I got a used control module and installed it. Still no fix. Mech. says all he knows to do is track all the wiring and check for issues. Have you encountered this before? Thanks.

Troubleshoot and replaced the fan with the instructions of this video, the most difficult part is remove the bottom part of the shroud because it have some clips and is difficult to remove it without breaking it, also the connector of the fan has 3 tie wraps that is very difficult to remove them because there is no good leverage. Also the shroud is holding some hoses that need to be disconnected from the bottom

Just replaced compressor on my 06 pathfinder at dealership, got home noticed they put a Valeo compressor on it , freaked me out cause they charged me for a Nissan one. I looked again and saw the Nissan item # under valeo, so I guess valeo makes Nissan compressors.

Hi Ry I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra off road and the A/C has stopped working. I watched your video and i started the truck with the A/C high. The large fan was working, whereas the electric fan was not. So i had performed the test that you recommended. The test was fine and the electric fan did work. So now i don't know what could be wrong. The fan doesn't work with A/C on but does with the test. Have you any thoughts on this topic 🤔 Once again thank you for your expertise.

No point doing a recharge at the dealer unless it’s new & covered under maintenance/ warranty. Go to ur local shop or you can even do it yourself for under $50 via amazon. So long as it’s only just a simple recharge just about anyone can manage but make sure to follow the instructions to the letter w/ glasses & gloves and just go slow and deliberately. However the real issue is likely deeper than recharging esp if under 5-7 years old. Re-read, do research and be curious, good luck.
