How to DISABLE SONY RECORDING LIMITS on most Sony Alpha Cameras

Unfortunately this isn't working anymore on certain Firmware Versions as well as newer cameras like the A7M3.

Recording limits are also a thing on modern Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras. In this video I show you how to disable the recording limits on all Sony Alpha cameras.
Please note that depending on your firmware this might not work anymore on certain camera models. I tried this in a Sony A7s2, A7II as well as Sony a6300 camera and it worked on all sony cameras without problem.
To disable the Sony camera recording limit we are going to install an app to the camera which overwrites the limit inside the camera's software. This step can be reversed and won't endanger your camera. If your camera overheated it would still shut down to prevent any damage from happening.

ATTENTION UPDATE AS OF 7.1.23 - I tried on a Sony A7sii with a PC using the Version 17 (PMCA-GUI v0.17).exe and it worked flawlessly - i would still recommend not running your camera longer than 6 hours as it may overheat and you could ruin internal components (the sony company put the 30 minute limit as a safety precaution) NOTE: The version 18 PMCA for Mac did NOT work for me - in fact i couldnt do anything on my mac with either the v18 or v17 so i switched to a PC and it worked first time with no problems. *shrug emoji* Again this was for a Sony A7sii and the date is 7.1.23 - dont give up if it doesnt work the first time! Try different operating systems and you will get it after a little while - good luck everyone! Time to go film past 30 minutes :)

As of 08/06/2023, this method proved effective on my Sony A7sii camera running firmware version 3. However, my attempts on an Apple MacBook Pro M1 were unsuccessful. I opted to purchase an affordable $300 Windows laptop from Best Buy, followed the provided steps at home, and the process proceeded without any issues. Evidently, this approach functions smoothly on Windows laptops or PCs, but appears incompatible with Apple computers. Since the MK3 can not run android apps anymore, no you can not do this. the only way would be by using a HDMI capture device.

You could re-install the app and check it. For my understanding the app is only used to sett this settings flag. After that the app won't be used anymore.

If you are recording in MP4, it cuts the recording when the file reaches 2GB. This does not happen in AVCHD of XAVCS.

gave error on install. And there is no application list on sony cameras. mine is A73. There is V18 of the link on internet. Intervalo meter or such remotes is the only option. You need to change settings video 2 -> Movie W/shutter to 'on' . So the shoot button starts recording

Hi GreenBox, I successfully followed the procedure of this tutorial. However, my RX100M3 still stops recording after 25 minutes. New formatted SD card (64GB). Firmware 2.00 loaded. I read an article external USB power also will prevent the camera to go to sleep (if this is the problem at all) so I took a powerbank and connected it to my Sony camera as well. Not succesfull too. What are other things to try? I need this camera for a wedding registration of a friend. Would be nice if I could record it this way.

Can you help. I have done this with my Sony a7 first gen , firmware 2.0 and it works great. Just got home from a job and the files are on the camera and can play back BUT when I put the camera via usb or removing the SD card the files do not show up. I have try’d unhiding files, nothing. This is a problem. They are not in the DCIM folder and I just recorded another test file and it too does not show up in the DCIM folder. Any help would be good as I know the files are right on that SD card and need to send them to the client.. thanks for you videos :)

Usually Sony has Thier video Files in the MP_ROOT folder. I would always recommend using Sony's sync Software or a third party one like 'Red Giants offload' to offload files.

Depending on your camera this might not be supported anymore. About 2018 was the last year with new cameras from Sony that still supported android apps.

I@greenbox, clear, and very simple video. Thank you. tried it on DSC-HX400V. The connection and that tweak showed up on camera settings. I can disable the recording limit. But the camera still records 22 minutes of video. In fact, it never ever recorded more than 22min despite using 64GB card. After tweak also, it is still 22 minutes. How to fix it? I don't know why my cam never ever reached 29min before tweak and why after tweak it does not allow lifting up the limit.

@@GreenBoxMedia I figured it out. In MP4 mode the limit is still around 17 minutes or so, does not even reach 29 min, with or without a hack. Perhaps hack is meant for AVCHD mode only. But if you set up the file format to AVCHD mode, then set it at 60i 17M settings, it can record up to about 4 hours on a 32GB card with the hack. Thanks for the wonderful video. Hmmm could be a File size limitation. Have you tried to use a lower resolution/frame rate just to test it?

Firmware can be a problem, but best is to just try it. If the firmware is incompatible, it will show it in the installer.

How to fix: Mac coming up with error message, not letting you open the downloaded file as "can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software." All you need to do here, is instead of double clicking on the downloaded file like normal, in your Finder, go to Locations, open the pica-gui-v0, then DRAG the file over to your Applications. Now open your list of applications and on the file, right click -> Open -> Open You may run into the error message again after your first 'Open' But I found doing it this way, on the second attempt it will finally allow you to open the app. Hope this helps people, as I was struggling for ages to figure out why it wasn't working for me. After this, the video steps are perfect and solved my problem! Thanks again. :)

Worked like a charm, but first make sure you have installed the Sony Camera Driver otherwise it will show connection denied. I tried a couple of times then installed the Sony driver and it worked in seconds. Also you can change a camera language to English 👍

Thanks for this dude! it really helps me with mine a7s2 now i have 2x a6000 and i did this i have a continue charger and card are emtpy but still it falling out after like 20 mins do you know how this is possible?

Possibly overheating due to the smaller body size.

Were you able to do this successfully for your a7s2? If so what firmware version is your camera currently at and did you use the mac.dmg? I'm having trouble getting it done

if we deleted the app after all, does it reset to the first limit setting or the limit will be gone forever?

If you delete the app the settings will stay.
