How to disinfect your BCD

For those looking for Steramine, that is a brand name for Quaternary sanitizers. In the US you can buy them at local restaurant supply stores under a variety of brand names, just ask where their sanitizers are and look at the labels. Typically about $10 for a pack of 100 to 150 tablets. In food service are supposed to use strips to test the concentration after the tablets are dissolved, that is why they don't have a wait time.

In the continental United States zebra muscles are an invasive species and a serious problem in freshwater. The larvae are microscope, about 10 times larger than a red blood cell, so the water that gets into a bladder can infect new bodies of water with normal fluid exchanges when you vent air from your BC in a dive if not sterilized between dive trips. I don’t want to be responsible for spreading them. I use Steramine (a fairly inexpensive food-safe product that you showed, also recommended by my BC manufacturer) to kill not only bacteria and fungus inside the wing, but also to eliminate any other beasties that may be in there. The exterior surfaces can also be treated in a dunk tank, but a good drying also suffices to kill ZM larvae. Keep up the good work on your vids! Solid advice!!

I tried breathing from the LPI this week after watching this. It’s doable and kind of a fun exercise (thanks for the suggestion) but I learned to be careful to keep the inhales short. The 10 bar / 140 psi coming out of that LPI into your lungs is PLENTY sufficient pressure to overinflate and injure your lungs if held too long.

I use steramine on my regs, pee valve, and BC once my regs are done. I also use it for sterilizing wetsuits, brushes, and regs at an aquarium I work at.

Thanks for that video. Never considered the availability of the inflator as an air source. As far as how long the disinfectant should be in the BCD, the companies won't list a time because the contact time required depends on how much contaminate is present.

steramine should not be rinsed, as it disinfect while drying. It should be in contact a minute with the surface to be disinfected. The fact that is doesn't need to be rinsed is great when your tap water is not drinkable!
