Good video. I started doing my own this year & I’ve found even at a simmer, if they’re left in too long, especially with oxyclean, the nasal bones separate or fall apart completely. I use an electric 1900 pressure washer I got at Home Depot for $95 & it’s perfect for skull cleaning. I wrap the antlers with syran wrap & electrical tape from just below the pedicles up to the G2s & it doesn’t mess them up if they get below the water line a bit.

Informative video. FYI - it is pedicle and not pedestal. Just my own little tip, instead of using boards to level out the skull, I put large rocks in the bottom of the pot to keep the nose up which helps keep the antlers level and out of the water. Does the same thing. Keep up the good work!

Thanks man. This was my first mount and Your video was very helpful. This might help some other people. I didn’t have a power washer so I used my air compressor to blow out all the cavities. After slow simmer all day the insides of skull came right out with the wire coat hanger and the compressor. With the air it does go everywhere too. So be careful and do it out side.

Great video and thanks for sharing. My best friend was a taxidermist for 23 years and he shared a few tips with me that I'll pass along. When you're simmering, add 1/2 cup to a cup of baking soda to your water while the meat is still attached. This will almost jelly the meat and membrane and allow for removal with a garden hose/ sprayer nozzle. When you add the skull back into the water, now add dawn dish soap and this will help to remove the grease from the skull and brain cavity. Thanks again and great video!

The current SDS for softswim clarifier is listed at 27.5%. Two things: 1. Are you sure that you have a bottle of 95% peroxide? 2. Are you still able to buy it? Their website seems to have a bottle that says “new updated formula”.

I had no idea it changed thanks for the intel. I just checked the bottle I have and it is 27.5% peroxide. I used it on the last euro I did in early November and it worked fine. So it is still plenty strong enough to get the job done.

Cool video I've done a few skulls myself it's a fun hobby. I think like a lot of things you have to watch different people using different techniques and come up with what works for you. Another cool thing to do is spray paint the skull copper then wipe on and wipe off a dark wood stain and the skull looks bronzed. Just a different look.

Jimmy, do you treat that fence post with anything or is it all just original? I have one but was worried about bringing bugs in. Also thought about sealing it to keep it all together.
@jimmyholbrook
@jimmyholbrook 4 жыл бұрын
That fence post was actually done by a professional. However I have since incorporated a couple of pieces of dead wood. I always get them during the cold of winter. Leave them in the yard a couple of weeks then move them to the garage for a couple of weeks. I am always watching for bugs during this waiting period. Then I blow them out with compressed air. I don't choose pieces with soft spots, rot, or wood that has a lot of wet dirt caked on them from being partially buried. So far no problems. I also don't seal any of it.

Maybe apply the clarifier with a disposable paint brush from a small dish or maybe a spray bottle??
@jimmyholbrook
@jimmyholbrook 5 жыл бұрын
Ive used the foam brushes before and it will work. But you have to keep applying it because it runs off the skull. If you take the time with the paper towels it keeps the chemical on the skull so it can soak in. I've found that this works better. I would not feel comfortable with the spray because of the over spray will bleach whatever it touches and you won't know until it changes color. I would love to make something I could just dip the entire skull in and leave it for an hour!

Do you find that the clarifier attacks the bone if you leave it on to long? Do you have an exact length of time of leaving the clarifier on? If the time you left the clarifier on didn’t create the whiteness you wanted can you reapply the clarifier with no ill affects? Great video though
@jimmyholbrook
@jimmyholbrook 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video! I have never experienced any damage to the bone and I have left it wrapped up with clarifier on it overnight before. I have reapplied the clarifier multiple times with no ill effects. When I first started using the product I would pour it on the skull and it would dry and I would continue to add more and let it dry. So if you have some spots that didn't cure well don't be afraid to dab some on with a foam brush. I don't have an exact time as each skull is different. If I skin a deer and start the cooking process within a day or two then I usually only need to leave the clarifier on for three or four hours.
@Trapshooter37
@Trapshooter37 5 жыл бұрын
@Jimmy: thanks for the reply and the confirmation on clarifier. Yeah I boiled one skull which was my test skull and will take your approach on the buck I did harvest this year. I think I boiled too much which as you know loosened some bone (nasal bones which I glued and it came out good but also the sutures on the top of the skull loosened, which I also glued.

That's totally up to you bro. Its a preference. If you like it the way it looks then that is all that matters. I like mine as white as I can get them so I put the chemical on. How did you mount your skulls to the tree
@jimmyholbrook
@jimmyholbrook 5 жыл бұрын
I just mounted one yesterday and I used picture hanging wire. I ran it through the small holes on the bottom/back of the skull and twisted the wire around a screw I attached to a piece of wood. For mounting on the post you can drill a pilot hole through the back of the skull just above the round hole leading into the brain cavity. Drill the pilot hole at an angle so the screw will actually exit the cavity hole and enter the post. Use a white screw if you can. Paint the head of the screw or use a white compound to cover it. If that does't make sense let me know and I will post a picture. Don't over tighten the screw or you could break your skull.

@@HendershotOutdoors The teeth do whiten some during the process I use. However the dark part in the middle of the teeth is dentin and is darker. It is used from the lower jaw bone to age the deer. I cover them with paper towels just like the rest so the chemical is working on them too. However I don't focus a lot on the teeth as I am satisfied with the way they turn out for me with this process. I suppose you could try to whiten them more I have just never tried it beyond what I teach in the video. Let me know if you give it a shot. I would love to see how it works for you!
