What if your goal is to use it primarily as a lower back exercise for back day? Moving the bar a bit away from the body and leading more with the back than the glutes really works those lower back muscles well. Is it a problem?

Not something I would do. The inefficient bar path and increased stress on the lower back (spine) makes it too risky for my liking. I'd go with 45 degree back extensions and snatch-grip podium deadlifts (assuming you have the mobility and technique down) if you want to torch the spinal erectors safely.

@@NextLevelAthletics What about of you hugged a plate or dumbell or bar close to the body? In terms of movement what I'm describing seems very close to a standing version of a weighted back extension. My gym doesn't have a back extension unfortunately or I'd just do that.

It could work but loading will become hard past a certain point since you can't hold much weight in that position. Without a back extension, you could do snatch-grip podium deadlifts as your heavier lift as explained here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6bZoaaVeZ6kb68. Then Jefferson curls with lighter weights and higher reps for assistance. These two exercises will develop a strong set of spinal erectors.
