I can do these off ice. I haven't tried it yet on ice and probably won't until I get my back spin. But at least I'll know what it's supposed to feel like when I start doing them on ice.

I got some weird ankle injury trying off ice so I only practice on ice or in a foam pit now.

@Maybemintmochi I would do the rotations first. Start from 1/4 turns and work up to 1.5 rotations. Also getting that weight transfer I'm mid air is hard. I mess it up now and then. Off ice, waltz jump to backspin position. Make sure your legs cross at the 1/4 of the rotation mark. Then land backwards in the backspin position. I do these all the time. I also practice axel from a stand still. No step just jump off left leg and swing right leg through with arms. This is by far the hardest way to do it, but it helps build strength. I still struggle with the stand still. The key is to focus on going up more than out. There are a bazillion off ice axel guide, but those are the main exercises I use. On ice waltz jump to backspin and waltz jump loop jump combo are good exercises.

@Emma Mouland if I were 10 plus years younger I probably would. I'm hoping my coach will put me in the harness soon so I can give it a try.

Thank you for the side board explanation of H spring, turning kicking foot pigeon toed in, then tucking pigeon toed free leg behind spring leg (sort of like a forward inside 3-turn in air) for loop final rotation and landing on kicking leg. The way you explained it makes it logical from a physics standpoint and for transferring weight for landing. I have consistent cheated one foot landing but cannot get into the rotation position like my clean high lutz and flips, so this may be what I needed to apply. BTW, my lutz was non-existent until I watched your lutz video about a month ago. I literally landed the next day with arms overhead and never miss it--can easily land in combination now. Your detailed steps for body and mind-set are excellent.

Thanks for your video! I did figure skating from 7 to 17 and almost landed my double axel. I started skating again 2-3 years ago and I am stuck at my axel. I am almost 44 and let me say, our stupid brain knows that failing hurt! Lol I can't wait to try your tips and see if it can help me! Especially the shoulder part. I tend to start square. I think I will work on some exercises you showed as well. Fingers crossed!

When i did ice skating years ago I started out spinning and jumping the normal way (anti clockwise) then when trying to do back spina discovered i rotate better clock wise. But by then i felt comfortable taking off in the anti clockwise direction, especially for a waltz jump. So my coach felt it would be better to have a good take off in the direction i dont naturally rotate in, than a terrible take off in the direction I do rotate in. I never managed to do an axel, i think the closest i got at the time was what someone else called a 'bell'? Jump? Basically one revolution and the landing double foot and doing the last half revolution on two feet. Many many years later i am thinking of taking ice skating lessons again, and while it will be a looong time before i am even ready to attempt an axel, i was wondering whether anyone out there who skates and can do an axel has any opinions on whether when i get to that point, i should try an axel on the direction i learnt to waltz jump in which right now feels much more comfortable to me. Or whether i should instead maybe spend time learning to do a waltz jump in the direction I spin till i feel as comfortable doing a waltz jump that way, and then when/if (as a middle aged woman) i get to the point where i can try an axel again, I can take off in the direction I spin? The reason i ask this as watching videos which talk about doing a waltz jump and scratch spinning afterward. And i cant really do the scratch spin in the direction i would waltz jump right now. I used to be able to do one foot spins that direction as i started doing them that way in lessons, but i switched once I realised I actually spin clockwise So basically what do you think is most important? Good entry into the jump? Or doing the jump in the direction i naturally spin in and learning to take off in that direction? When i last skated my skating was a sort of mongrel combo of clockwise and anti clockwise, ie toe loops, waltz and I think flip jumps were anti clockwise and i think loops, lutz were clockwise, all my spins were clockwise and the axel was where neither way felt right... Not sure sure why i spin clockwise, if it is a left handed thing, I am right handed, lol

Anyway most of the tutorials and 'pre-axel' don't work for me because i spin the other way than what i waltz jump. I have tried to waltz jump the other way but it just feels so weird i cant even start it. But trying to make myself rotate 1.5 times the opposite way to what i spin, when i cant rotate 1.5 times the right way.... i always feel like the take off, like i can jump high (for me) , but i feel like i don't have any 'omph' in terms of rotating. Like i don't have the sort of natural gut feeling of being able to bring my arms in and rotate my body. Not sure how else to explain that except maybe someone who can do an axel try to do one the opposite direction. Years ago when i was ltwking ice skating lessons I remember discussing this with my coach anf i think from memory she got me to either do a waltz jump both ways or attempt an axel both ways and she said because i had a lot more speed and height from the anti clockwise rotation (when i spin clockwise) that she felt i had more chance of getting it that way than when i tried to do even a waltz jump clockwise and i dont think i coupe even hop, let alone jump,ie basically was just a 3turn with me almost falling over trying to make it a jump lol But now watching these exercises makes me wonder, if i decided to have lessons again and got to the point where i was able to try an axel. Maybe before that i should actually just spend a lot of time teaching myself to do a waltz in the clockwise direction first? Like maybe spending time learning to jump a waltz in that direction, in the long term would be better than trying to make myself rotate enough in the other direction? Or maybe not as i used to be able to spin anti clockwise. Does anyone have any links to the science behind what direction we spin in and why and how much of that is practice vs natural inclination? I know when i was taught they just assumed everyone was anti clockwise there was never even any mention of doing it clockwise (though i also don't think they actually said "spin in this direction it was more just the teacher and then all of us kids did...". so I would think there have been other ppl who learnt to skate and do their first spins and jumps anti clockwise, who later felt more natural spinning clockwise?

Another great video from Jasmin. I have a question on the leg and foot providing the jump power, I know you have to down the knee to provide unloading the power for any jump. What exercises can strengthen muscles for jumping And Landing. Thanks Jasmin. If no answer no issues, your very busy person. Cheers

They’re easy off ice… I have an amazing backspin I can do it in the harness without being lifted up. I landed all doubles off ice. On ice double Sal and double loop but I’m petrified of an axel. I’ve been working on it for a year I’m not scarred but I can’t hit the backspin and and on one foot it’s either or. Please help!
