Next time you watch or go to a motogp race listen to the bikes when they approach a turn coming off a long straight away. You will hear the shift and at the same time you will hear them roll on the throttle a little to match the RPM. Great video man. A true rider who knows advanced techniques. Remember to ride to your ability. If you can do this then slow down with a combination of braking and down shifting.

blipping the throttle matches the speed of the two gears that are trying to engage when you change gear. Think of two gears trying to engage, one spinning really fast and the other not so much, it will clunk and be more brutal. Blipping cancels this out if you do it right and will make your downshift smoother, avoiding locking up the rear tyre if you're braking hard. Hope this helps, it's a bit hard to understand but it makes sense if you think about it.

Yes, shifting up withoud a clutch is quite easy..just briefly roll of the throttle, it takes the power off the drivetrain, and allows you to shift up, you could also put your foot on the shifter, and wait for the rev-limiter to kick in..that closes the throttle for you.. same thing applies for downshifting. just "blip"the throttle to match the revs you woud have in the lower gear..., only braking and downshifting at the same time is quite hard...
@EeeScape11 жыл бұрын
While downshifting and rev matching, you don't want to press the brakes since you are just concentrating on how to slow the bike down using the engine, but at the same time keep it as smooth as possible. Breaking is something you do after you've slowed the bike down already. He did briefly talk about trail breaking and corners (different topic). This doesn't mean you never use your breaks. Just not as the same time as the engine breaking. Do that at the tail end once the bike is settled.
@1sickkidd910 жыл бұрын
I'm still having trouble doing it, there's times when I do it so smoothly, and times when I do it wrong. Its pretty frustrating.

I'd like to know how did you downshift using your feet and clutch at the same time.
@natelee412 жыл бұрын
Well it depends. It would cause a problem if you still gave it gas while braking. But all your trying to do is match the engine speed to the transmission speed for a smoother downshift. The braking is only used for stopping or to slow down. For example, just before a apex, i will downshift 2-3 times depending on how sharp the turn is. All while holding in the brake to slow my speed and then lean into the turn while trail braking, then accelerate out since im already in 3rd gear. Hope that helps

Pretty much at the same time. I pull in the clutch, Kick the shifter down, Blip the Throttle and then release the clutch. But it does take time and practice.
@cooler200012 жыл бұрын
So after you blip the thottle do you completely release it? Like when your upshifting you usually release the clutch and give it throttle at the same time.

Nice video. I've been seeing alot of ppl not rev matching because of their slipper clutches and felt I was being a tool doing it. My bike doesn't have slipper clutch. I found that it depends on the rev range your in 2. Works best @ mid to hi revs but when my revs are low, the blip would surge the revs too hi for a single gear drop. It was more practical for me to let clutch out slower for this one, after the blip because I was so use to doing it. Am I in the correct mindset and use of this?

Thanks for the vid dude, im trying

Pull the clutch first, then you can downshift and blip at the same time. With time and practice, you'll get to a point where you do these steps almost at the same time.. but pulling the clutch first is the priority.

@FOREVERghen Hi, this took me a while, I also use to jerk the bike and over rev. It's basically estimating what the RPM's will be when you downshift. You don't have to do it perfectly, but as long as it is around RPM range it should be a smooth gear change. It just takes a lot of practice and getting to know the bike, it varies depending on what gear and how fast you are traveling at. Just keep on practicing brother!

Actually, what I'm doing is pulling in the clutch and giving it a bit more gas to match the engine rpm to where it will be when I downshift, for a smoother downshift, I don't let off the throttle. Then I downshift and release the clutch all the way, now at this point I either crack that sucker open wide and take off, or engage the clutch and let the bike engine brake just before a apex of a twisty road. Hope that helps!!! Ride Safe ^_^

How do you recommend practicing this ? I'm a new rider (1100km + driving school). Can something bad happen like blocking tires or wheelies (Yamaha MT07 only 75hp) ? Should i start doing it in higher gears and move to the lower gears later because making a mistake there is more dangerous ?
@Jossy4092111 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can go from first to neutral or second through sixth gear to neutral just like in a car. Simply pull in the clutch then gear down into neutral and glide to a stop at the light using your brakes. Of course why would you that when it sounds so much sexier to downshift? :p
@GOBlackKnights9111 жыл бұрын
it doesnt matter which. all you have to do is hold the clutch when ure in first otherwise you will stall. its usually better to be in first so you can quickly get out of dangerous situations

do you downshift while the clutch is in or while you hold the clutch in and blip at the same time?
@civix1611 жыл бұрын
Downshifting is more effective because if you go all the way down to neutral as your slowing down and the traffic light turns green you might have a difficult time finding the right gear to take off in while your rolling. not a good thing when you have cagers behind you not paying attention.

How do you know how much to blip it? Everytime I try blipping the throttle I feel like I rev it too much, sometimes when I try downshifting and rev matching I just jerk forward like I'm about to take off so I'm obviously doing it wrong any pointers on my situation?
@EeeScape11 жыл бұрын
Also, you might do it differently in real world riding vs practice. For example, if you are in 4th gear, are you at the start, middle or top end of the RPM for that gear? And what speed are you going to practice rev matching? The reason it lurching forward is because the speed you are going in the 4th compared to the speed you are going in the 3rd is slower than it should be. I mean, I can go 60mph in 4rd or be in 4th at 40mph, then down shift. The results will be different.
@roksonable11 жыл бұрын
if you dont over rev it (put it in too low gear at speed) it wont effect the engine, acctually its better for clutch to downshift this way than just releasing it ..

Say for example you're in 4th gear and need to come to a stop very quickly can you just hold the clutch in and rev match until you reach 1st gear or do you need to release the clutch every time you downshift once until you reach 1st?
@krayzieegg72949 жыл бұрын
My reflex does that when i need to slow down fast. But someone told me that you cant downshift from 4 to 1 without releasing the clutch even if your rev matching. I dont really know how much is that is true. But im assuming it might be true because i was observing the motogp guys how they downshift and they actually do release the clutch every time they go down a gear but they do it really fast kinda like this guy. Im actually practicing it every time i ride but when the time comes to slow down fast my mind says that i need to slow down as fast as i can so muscle memory comes to play and always keep forgetting to release the clutch.
@krayzieegg72949 жыл бұрын
I guess its all about breaking the habit to preserve whatever you are breaking every time you downshift wrong
@korewest9 жыл бұрын
+Damian Messenger There would be no point in "Rev Matching" if you don't release your clutch to engage the rear tire with the engine speed you just revved to. Meaning, if you continue to hold in your clutch and attempt to rev match from 4th to 1st, you will just be free-spinning the engine without applying the actual effect of it to the wheels.
