Everything about this instruction is great, but it doesn't account for plus size/extended size bodies. What if the waist line is longer than the bust line, where does that dart go? The side seam also slants outwards for plus size bodies. I really wish there was a video somewhere on KZbin that is clear and concise, like this one, but for larger sized bodies. It's so disheartening. However, you are fantastic Alisa!

Thank you so much for making these videos! I can only imagine how many hours of learning it yourself enough to explain, planning the video, making and editing it, and making the additional instruction sheets for channel members must have taken you! It’s sometimes a bit confusing to look up inch fractions for me, so additional cm amounts in brackets on the instruction sheet would be the only thing I’d wish for :) And btw your hand coordination to draw those super neat curved marker lines is extremely skilled as well! :D

Now if i dropd a straight line from the sholder to the bust to draw the arm whole the trouser becomes tight in the upper bust area. How to solve this? 😢

This is a very clear presentation! Unfortunately I got all the way to the very end and hit a snag. I need to remove 4 inches from my front armhole. I have a fairly large difference between my bust and waist and always end up adding around 2 inches in a full bust adjustment to regular patterns. Is there so.e other method of adding a bust dart that might work? I'm thinking similar to a Y adjustment where the shoulder area is widened?

really clearly explained thanks, although having measured and drawn this if you a small lady in height but you have large breasts I suspect the arm hole you draft following this will be much too low in my case by a good inch and half. (my nipples are way to the south). I have also therefore measured arm pit to waist and tweaked the bottom of the arm hole I drew because this way my arm holes where huge as my waist to apex measure is small owing to my body shape, also sadly the side bust dart swings into the arm hole when you have big breasts and does not work as shown.

Yes, it is going to be uploaded in a few minutes :) I haven't had a chance to respond to your recent comments but I saw the one about closing the darts and it was on my to-do list to get back to you. You can do what you suggested only in a few cases, when you don't have many curves on your body, in all other 90% you cannot do it. Since dart is created from a difference of two volumes, from bigger to smaller or vise versa. When you close a dart and do not direct that volume anywhere else, but simply eliminate it, you reduce the actual volume of your 3D pattern. That means - it won't fit. I just wanted to let you know before you proceed to eliminating darts. You can for sure eliminate them, but that volume has to go somewhere, you can't just cut it out.
@aliciaolivas797
@aliciaolivas797 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThoughtfulCreativity Thank you for your response, I can’t say I have worked with darts much but I think you misunderstood what I mean by closing the darts on a pattern. It is the same thing as when you close and sew darts on your fabric, creating a transition, not a straight line. Bianca from the Closet Historian does dart manipulation fairly often and that includes closing darts to make a garment smooth yet still contoured to your body. You might want to check out her video where she makes a kimono sleeve top and shows how she closes the darts on the pattern. My hips are 12” difference from my waist so needless to say I need darts to accommodate my curves and I appreciate any tips you give on your channel. :)
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 3 жыл бұрын
@@aliciaolivas797 hmmm...yes, I must say I am a bit confused by what you wrote - I work with kimono sleeves and grown on sleeves a lot and if you want to eliminate darts then you need to open them up into something, redirect the volume. I just looked up Bianca's kimono sleeve blouse and there she opens up the bust dart into a sleeve. That is a standard practice, you're not taking the volume away, but redirecting.

Oh, I just remembered :) I did a very quick video in the Members Only FB group on how to open the darts in the pencil skirt. Thank you so much for creating this video, it was super clear and easy to follow for a beginner like me. I have a question, my back armhole length is LONGER than my front armhole length by 1”. I’ve tried remeasuring myself twice but can’t get much of a difference. I also notice that my front shoulder slope is much steeper than my back shoulder slope. Is this just the way my figure/posture is? Or did I mess something up? And if my back arm hole is really longer than my front, do I need to add a dart to the back instead of the front bodice piece?
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 3 ай бұрын
Hello there it might be just how your body is. The best course of action before anything else is to actually check and make a test bodice block (use cheap materials, since you will probably will need to make a couple, which is totally normal). Once you make a test bodice block and put it on yourself - you will be able to see if the pattern draft accommodates your figure or if perhaps a step or something else was missed during the drafting process. It is like with a batter for cake, once it is all mixed together it is hard to tell if you added butter or forgot it, but once you bake the cake it becomes quite obvious.

Carmen, you will love once you have your block! Yes, this will work for all bust sizes since you are drafting according to YOUR measurements and not from a commercial made pattern. I have had people use it for all sorts of bust sizes, yes, some adjustments might be needed after your first mock up - but that is the case for almost anyone, regardless of bust size, as when we "translate" the flat pattern onto a body - we are translating 2D onto 3D. There are instruction sheets on the Google Drive as well as Members Extra regarding this tutorial - make sure to check out your Members Perks. :)

If my bust circ. and waist measurement are equal ( 5 babies have a lot of baby weight to lose) do I need a waist bust dart?
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Жыл бұрын
Great question - the dart is formed by the difference between two measurements (see my video explaining what is a dart and how to go about them) if there is no difference - then dart isn't needed for the waist. However - you will need a bust dart, unless you are drafting a dart less block, then you will need to account for the lack of dart around your bust and that volume will need to go somewhere.

Hello there :) I usually use muslin, but here I think I was using Swedish Tracing Paper. It does not really matter, as long as it is convenient for you. But for continuously working with a bodice block and making adjustments I would suggest to go with muslin, since Swedish tracing paper is stiffer and less durable.

Alisa you’re a great teacher! Thank you for these instruction 🙏👌but Q? You didn’t mention exclusively to add any amount of ease when plotting the front shoulder slope for front bodice. Ease was added to back shoulder slope when it was plotted.....please if you could clarify that part it would be helpful....many thanks!

I'm trying to understand why my bodice doesn't look the same, but I'm following your instructions, and I can't get it. I always get stuck at the bust line. I'm super confused about how the bust apex to waist can be 9 inches on the mannequin when mine is 4.5 inches. Because my bust line ends up really low on my pattern, the arm hole looks really large.
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Ай бұрын
Each bodice will look differently. Your bust apex might be lower than mine. If the armhole is too low then just simply bring up the underarm section and that's it :)
@MadameFonz
@MadameFonz Ай бұрын
@ThoughtfulCreativity Well, I'm not sure how to do that since the underarm section is connected to the bust line. I did give everything a once over again, and my original measurements were all different. I did it again and they were different again. My pattern looks a little better now, but with my measurements changing constantly, I think this will take a few days to get right.

Love your videos! It is nice to be able to listen to a person that talks clearly, but I do find you speak tooooo fast which is common with young people today. Could you slow it down a little for us old folks? I am going to subscribe. Also I was wondering if these bodice slopers need to have adjustments like a rounded back and sway back?🪡🧵🧓🏻

Hello Alisa, Please can you tell me how you calculated how far to drop the bust dart? You mention that for yourself you would drop it approx 1/2 inch but for the model 1.1/2 inches. I have a large bust. I am a 44DD. I have seen some videos where a "bust circle is mentioned" with calculations for sizing size A to F. My bust circle is 4" diameter. Should I drop the bust dart by 2 inches? I would like to add that I've drafted a pattern block for knit fabrics using your method and that worked out really well, so thank you very much for that. It was very simple to follow and your instructions are clear and concise. I'm completely stuck at the moment, so I'm hoping you can help as I've tried many other tutorials but none as helpful as yours. Thank you kindly, Una

Thank you so much for a very informative tutorial. I have pattern making books which advised the measurements taken should go under the elastic where it ends. Looking at this wonderful tutorial it looks like you measuring right on top of elastic. Please advise. TY .

I absolutely loved this tutorial you were very detailed and precise, the arm hole area and bust line area were the most challenging to construct due to me being plus sized but besides that it was very fun and educational following your instructions, thank you so much I really appreciate you taking time to share this video. Absolutely love this video and will finally try to make a bodice block. I have tons of books and they are intimidating and confusing. One question I have is about the back armhole dart. Is it possible to move it into the waist dart? I originally thought yes but the angle it goes to isn’t the same as the waist dart, so I’m not sure it is the same as moving the dart volume around on the bodice front. Also, my first self drafted pattern was the cami pattern you did recently. I must say never have I had any tank top/ cami ever fit me so well. Amazing video thank you. That video is why I decided to become a member, especially when I pay more for cup if coffee then the cost of your membership. So much content and value for such a small price. Thank you so much.

Tygress, hello hello! Thank you for joining and welcome and I am SO SO glad that you're enjoying and having great results! About the darts - great question, the rule of thumb is - you can combine darts (like moving the bust darts into the waist dart completely) if these darts originate from the same point, like bust dart and waist dart originate from the bust apex, therefore you can combine one with another. Thhe back shoulder armhole drat you can move around, but I would not try to transfer it into the waist dart, as shoulder dart goes from the curve of the back armscye towards the shoulder blade. Here's a little secret - you can transfer it into the neckline, and as most of the times you will be cutting the neckline much wider than your bodice neckline, then with cutting away the neckline you will also cut away dart volume, not all of it, but what will be left will be so insignificant that you won't need to worry about it all. Same with leaving that dart unsewn in the armhole, if you add a sleeve, most of the time for me that volume is absorbed by the sleeve and the fit is great, and if doing sleeveless - you will be cutting away some part of the armhole, therefore the dart will go away. 3rd option is to let out this dart into various places - like I did in the "how to get rid of the dart" video - take a look at that - it will help you! :) whew, I hope all of this makes sense, I know it is a long one :) and thank You again!

Thank you for such a quick response. You are on it. Another question for you. I have to make a 4inch bust dart on mine and that make the arm hole really wonky. Would you recommend doing a smaller bust dart to start with and pinch more out in the mock up stage or take the full 4inch and just eyeball truing up the armse?
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 2 жыл бұрын
@@tygress12 I would do the first one - and definitely do the mock up :) after you pinch the excess and adjust the armscye (if needed just do it right on your body with a pencil) - it will be a smooth sailing.
