This is a quick beginners guide to creating a simple digital illustration from a sketch. I used a Wacom graphics pen and tablet and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 8.7.1 to create this speed painting tutorial.
In real-time, this illustration took approximately 25 minutes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The steps used in this tutorial are outlined below:
1. Scan or take a photograph of your hand drawn sketch.
2. Open Sketchbook Pro, and change the canvas size to around 3000 x 3000 pixels: IMAGE, CANVAS SIZE.
(My illustration works on a square canvas. If yours is a different shape, adjust canvas size accordingly.)
3. Check the resolution is correct: EDIT, PREFERENCES, CANVAS, RESOLUTION - 300DPI.
4. Add your sketch image: FILE, ADD IMAGE.
5. Stretch or shrink the image to fit the canvas.
6. To begin, add 2 layers on top of your sketch image layer. 1 layer for pencil lines (ink) and 1 layer for colour
7. Lower the opacity of the hand drawn sketch layer so the lines become faint. (Make sure you can see it just enough to be able to sketch over it.)
8. The brushes I have used for this illustration are as follows...
"ART PENCIL" for the outline (ink) of the drawing.
"CONCEPTUAL 2" for the colour wash.
"SMUDGE ROUND BRISTLE BRUSH" to blend colour.
"SOFT ERASER" to gently erase and touch up.
9. Beginning on the 'ink' layer, use "ART PENCIL" to start sketching around your image.
10. Zoom in on your canvas to work on fine details such as eyes.
11. Check your progress from time to time by zooming out and hiding the original sketch layer.
12. Once all of the basic sketch lines have been drawn, keep the original hand drawn sketch layer hidden. You will no longer need it.
13. On your 'colour' layer (below the ink layer), use "CONCEPTUAL BRUSH" to add colour to your sketch.
14. Use "SMUDGE ROUND BRISTLE BRUSH" to blend brush lines.
15. TECHNIQUES TO TRY:
Try duplicating the ink layer & colour layer to add strength and depth.
Another technique to try is changing a duplicated colour layer to a
'COLOUR BURN' effect layer. You can play around with the strength of the effect by changing opacity. Try adding a texture layer on top of your
illustration.
16. Lastly, zoom out and see if your illustration needs anything more. I added a few highlights on another paint layer.
16. Save your work as TIFF or JPEG (or whichever file type you require.)
