Hi! I’m a beginner artist and I’m attempting to draw my German shepherd with soft pastels. I’m wondering how you keep the top layers from blending into the bottom when you’re layering (like when drawing the fur over the base layer, or the details on the nose over the base layer, or eyes)? I’m having trouble keeping the vibrancy of the top layer without it getting muted to the bottom layer. I’m using soft pastels (soft), soft pastels (hard), and soft pastels (colored pencils). Thanks in advance!

Hi there, soft pastels are easily bendable so you have to take this into account when creating your base layers, the 2 layers are likely to mix. When you say colored pencils, do you mean pastel pencils or colour pencils? I think it would help to make sure your base layers are light enough so that it doesn’t mix too mix with any details going on top. Don’t put too much pigment down for the base layer, a little goes a long way and you should be then able to put much more vibrant and opaque marks on top with pastel pencils 😊

Thank you! No i don’t use any fixative as it ruins the colours. I tell the clients to frame it asap to avoid any smudging / damage to the pastel 😁

Looks almost exactly the same as Zara's portrait of an Alsatian a year earlier; same head position, eyes the same, open mouth and toungue out. You just forgot the dark spots on the tongue.
