@@klauszwegert6382 I picked it up maybe 3 or 4 months ago. I drew as a kid and over time I did get better watching anime and what not. I have a graphic design background from high school which was some 7-8 years ago. I have always felt that my art was ok: I could draw decent characters but no knowledge of backgrounds or lighting or anything. I could just draw anime characters lol. So because of quarantine I had a ton of time to kill and I stumbled on his art school program. Honestly, I can tell the improvement because the foundation Marc provides is really helpful for beginners and anyone of any level. Great exercises too to do. If you can afford it, I would do it! Also make use of the beginners Cubebrush deals and codes to get a percentage off because I was able to toss some more tutorials into the cart and got at least $100 more in tutorials for the price of the art school. I would definitely sit on it for a week researching other products to get so you can maximize the price point. Also, not sponsored! Im just glad Marc's art school got me back into drawing.

I think it's harder for me to not simply make long, smooth lines but to actually connect them together nicely. I was always scribbling fast, messy sketches on papers and now getting rid of this habit seems almost impossible. Not to mention, focusing on this tiny circle on a screen is pretty tiring :p But I guess I was never paying enough attention to my lines quality. This tutorial comes just about time!
@ononono70164 жыл бұрын
It depends on your art style. You can keep your messy lines if you want. If not, I would recommend that you do messy sketches in the beginning and then concentrate on slowly and deliberately drawing clean line-art over the sketch. It helps if you take a moment to close your eyes and imagine how you want your sketch to look like and focus on where the lines are in particular. Messy line-art is often a mix of not exactly knowing what you want and having a restless hand and brain

I think another good tip is to have a cleaner sketch overall. It really helped me a lot in transitioning between sketch to lineart by getting my sketch a lot more cleaner. This is something that I notice many other artists do, they have a relatively clean sketch, or start really roughly and then refine that sketch. I guess by having a cleaner sketch you wouldn't be confused about where you should place your lineart if the sketch was rougher and has guidelines everywhere it would be relatively harder to draw your lineart because you can confuse the lines in your sketch. Also, my tablet is actually pretty small so I'm not really able to do the elbow movement as efficient, and I'm not really the type to rotate my canvas, so I would definitely try to improve in that aspect!

I feel like I learned some things but I will not remember well enough. 1. line confidence- (don't do the short hairy lines) ctrl Z until the line is right. 2. Line Thickness- use thinner lines to show detail and distance, thicker lines for outline and shadowed area 3. Line color- use lighter lines for background 3 line suggestion- use lines to show volume & texture, hint at shading with lines. I am not educated in art at all. The only things I have learned how to draw is knives and some design sketches for blacksmithing. I have wanted to learn how to sketch for years now. Even before trying any digital art I would do a rough outline with lots of erasing, then trace a new piece of paper to do a final outline, then trace again to do some basic shading. It is pretty cool how with digital we can do this with full control. I appreciate the tips, have to lean muscle memory first.

Hi Marc. You're one of my favorite art teachers on KZbin and I always get excited whenever you cover new topics! Can you please also make a video on *shadows* and *cast shadows?* It's difficult for me to understand *how shadows & cast shadows are supposed to look.* What’s even more confusing is that *shadows & cast shadows are subject to change according to the type of lighting in the environment.* I don't know how and when to depict those changes. In addition to this, it’s not easy to figure out how to distort *a cast shadow that belongs to a complex physical form.* There’s a lot to consider when working to portray *shadows that make sense in their environment* and that also *accurately portray complex forms.* I'd really love to see a tutorial on this someday!

One thing I'd be curious to hear you talk about (maybe a video suggestion?) is when or how you decide to show your lines versus when you have more painterly or colored edges. Is that just subjective or is there more to it? Do you struggle with which to do? Is it a bit of both? I feel like I've seen you use both in different images (and perhaps in the same image?) and I was just wondering how you go about making those decisions. I've always loved the art you put out and so these videos are great to watch and see. Thanks!

a tip I really recommend is to not focus on PERFECT lines. What I mean is that a lot of people focus on having a perfectly clean line without a single wobble. But you might come to find that little wobbles or imperfect lines can actually give a bit of character to your piece. I even use brushes that jitter in size to give it a more human feel. Lineart is important but it's not your only tool to make a nice piece of art. If you have a good sketch to work off, a good composition etc. it really doesn't matter a lot how clean and perfect every line is. Follow the tips in this video of course but don't beat yourself up over little imperfections.

Thank you for these videos, Marc. I'd love to see a video on your sketch process, since it seems like you hardly make a sketch at all and can practically jump into details almost right away. Probably your years of experience and maybe having a very sharp image of you want in your "mind's eye"? Anyways I struggle a ton with sketching so if you have any suggestions on that I'd love to hear them.

I'm not super far into the video, just around the 3:30 mark. But I wanted to say that I've recently been trying to use my arm more and oh my god. It's uncomfy, but... I'm starting to work on it. I catch myself slipping and using my wrist too much and it's caused that weird super sensitive thing to happen to my hand and up most of my arm twice. Atleast, it helped cause that! But now my lineart's been getting better. Not too much better, but there's a noteable difference and I'm glad for that! Hopefully others can start to do this too if they're too nervous to try or if they stopped since it was too uncomfy at the start!

More tips! (Digital art) If you usually have messy sketches like me, then make another layer and try to make a cleaner sketch over that one. A messy sketch will confuse you, lineart would be much harder. Another tip for beginners with digital art that have only done traditional art before: since you most likely use a pencil. So, in digital art use a softer brush? Or a pencil like brush if that makes sense. once you have more practice since digital art is harder if you’ve done traditional your whole life, THEN you switch to a hard brush with harder edges.

I have instictively used these, but it is so clearer now to track mistakes in them when I now, thanks to this video, have a clearer undetstanding of what I was doing Particularly line suggestion: when transitioning from lineart where everything looked fine for me to coloring and shading, I was alwas disappointed at some level to the loss of expression in the image. After watching this I realize it was because I, for some reason, removed line suggestions in favor of shading and coloring, and only kept the stronger outlines Hopefully I can easily fix this in future Thanks for keep making videos I never realized I needed!

i like to watch and listen more to this channel than those other channels loaded with irrelevant roasting and dissing of artists. This channel goes straight to the topic with sincerity.

Thank you soooo much oml 🥺💖 I’ve gone through so many lineart videos looking for explanations for each of these tips, especially the sort of whisk lines that add volume- and I was kinda losing hope in YT tutorials until I found this! You explained everything I needed to know in a very simple, yet informative way and omg I can’t wait to snatch that brushfkfkg ✨👄✨
