Dude I recently subscribed to the Watts Atelier online program and your videos are more helpful on learning the Reilly head than theirs. Anyone thinking about joining Watts should be aware.

Greg Nouret I'm not saying don't try it, but seriously study and practice Galens video as well as Proko stuff beforehand. Especially practice sharpening a conte pencil their way and using it on smooth newsprint.

Why don't the useful videos blow up the way the useless videos do... Thank you for the videos. They were informative enough for me to understand the method.

knowing how to draw my faces, you know, so many years of just practicing by guessing till I get it like I want it, and then doing your tutorial is - wow - really going to cut a lot of time off of my (hard dammit lol) work. I thought I'd studied reilly, but I hadn't. When I did your tutorials and really focused on putting it all into my memory, I was stunned by the results. This is so helpful, so well explained, and so easy to follow. I do not recommend this to my competition. LOL. Thank you so much, Galen, for sharing this invaluable tool. I have a BFA in painting followed by years at the art students league in manhattan, art academy, etc etc, and, I hadn't had this so well taught to me ever. You have my everlasting gratitude

I know I'm a bit late here, but thank you! Your tutorials helped me a lot and there's something about your personality that makes you calming to watch- makes it a lot easier to watch art tutorials with ADHD lol. I've been getting super into technical art and realized the loomis method wasn't working for me. I have a visual perceptual processing deficit that makes it really important for me to have clear geometric guidelines and the Reilly method has helped a lot so far, but nobody else was as easy to learn from as you!

I have been learning the different angles of the reilly method only on your channel. It's the easiest to understand and follow. Surprised at how some of my portraits turned out because of your videos. Thank you!

My question right now in life is where has Reilly and Galen been all of my drawing life? Like, why on God's green majestic Earth had my art teacher whipped my back, back in the day with Loomis, HUH? It's helpful but this is on some Anatomy textbook level business. I did the front view last from his tutorial and it was a bit off, ONLY because I haven't drawn in years and this guy has been doing it for a while, therefore his will be smoother and more inline. But if I practice and keep following his tutorials I'll be soaring. I'm actually really pumped to start drawing again and Reilly and Galen is the reason. Not getting the eyes even are a thing of the past, youtube community!

Thanks for this one, too! I wonder why there aren't any Reilly Method books in print just now. It must all be in the public domain; Jeff Watts is working on remastering a couple of the George Bridgman books, I believe...

This is purely hearsay, because I haven't tried to verify anything, but I think it's primarily because when Frank Reilly died, he hadn't yet produced any sort of books or official instruction on the method. What we have today is supposed to be purely thanks to his students sharing what they learned from him.

Hey Galen, fantastic videos on the Reilly method, really appreciate what you are doing. I notice in the demonstration you've placed the front of the face slightly away from the initial circle - was that intentional? I've been drawing the Loomis method/Reilly with the line coming straight off of the circle. I often find my side views are a little squished - could this be why?
@ArtbyGalen
@ArtbyGalen 7 жыл бұрын
Andy King it's possible, but I'd have to see it to give a solid answer. But you could give it a shot and see if that helps things. In my case yes it was deliberate, but it's not something I do every time. I change it up depending on the face and head structure.

Art by Galen Awesome thanks, I've drawn a few side head sketches today and they do look much better starting a little out in front. I'm definitly going to continue with that as my starting point. thanks!

Great videos. Confused on one detail. If you look at page 43 of Drawing The Head & Hands, Loomis uses the eye line to mark the center of the eyes. Does the Reilly Method use it to mark the bottom of the eyes or is this just a personal preference of yours?

@ArtbyGalen
@ArtbyGalen 7 жыл бұрын
Faith, I'd really have to see it to see what's happening with your drawing. But with that said, I do sometimes draw this method with that front face line on the edge of the circle, and sometimes with it off of it. All I can say without seeing it is to make slight adjustments to "un-squish" it. Another method is to take a copy of a face that you're happy with, and reverse engineer these guidelines based on that, then compare it to your current ones and see what the differences are. Best of luck, and please feel free to comment if you have any more questions or frustrations. I'll do what I can to help it make sense.

So I noticed from many different artists that when using the Reilly Method some place the mouth and nose further up in the circle so that the top lip sits right above the circle and some place the lips under the circle. Why is this? Does anyone know /
@ArtbyGalen
@ArtbyGalen 6 жыл бұрын
I think it honestly boils down to preference. Either would work. Human faces vary so much in shape, size and proportion, there is a LOT that can be changed about them and they'd still technically be accurate. Just use the method you think looks/works best for you :) Thanks for your comment!
