Thank you Dave, it’s going to be great to paint this monkey on pateron . My Daddy loved taking me to the zoos to see these incredible creatures . We could spend hours watching the gorillas! Whenever I see them I know he’s close by .. I just wish I could understand your free hand method.. I still use projectors. Ugh!

I love apes, they are magnificent animals and great to draw and paint. Wonderful memories of your father. I should worry about the outline too much, it is surprising how many top artist use projectors... I just love the freedom that freehand gives. It did take me a lot of years of practise. 😊🙏

How do you scale from your reference photo by eye and pencil to your scaled up drawing.? Thank you

Hi Dave I came here from one of your other video's to learn more about the outline (I think it is the more recent terrier). Right now i am tracing and I would like to get more confident in my freehand using your quadrant method. You talk about making "imaginary angles" in other videos but I am not certain what that is in reference to the outline and didn't see it mentioned here. I do see you using your pencil as a reference tool to align the vertical and horizontal axis, is this what is meant by imaginary angles ? Also I am confused how the pencil is accurate when the length of the line is different in the reference verses the drawing (something tells me I should have paid better attention in geometry class lol). I have been thinking of using a proportion divider with your method instead of a pencil to feel a little more confident but I am wondering if I am missing something in regards to the imaginary angles.

Hi there... say I want the check the location of the corner of the eye... I image the angle from that location point, say corner of the mouth to the former... and image a line that would meet each point... If I placed a protractor on the line I would have the angle... but I just image it or sense what it the angle is and then just draw each area in. hard to explain... maybe you might see me visually in one of these video in my freehand playlist. I have to say your finish work is amazing BUT! your transfer of lines & drawing to paper leaves me stunned on the amount of rubber used, perhaps you may consider using a projector like a lot of other artists IMO.
@DavePortersArt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much George! I do enjoy using the rubber to sculpture the likeness. My personal feelings about projectors are that if we use one we really can't say that we have created it, we become a colouring in artist. So for that reason I persevere with the way I do the outline.

@@DavePortersArt I applaud your perseverance & honesty in showing how your create your drawing . Unlike a lot of artists on YT who magically have a drawing appear identical to the original photo & without making a single mistake. As a portrait artist my self I would never use a projector. I look forward to watching more of your videos. TY for your time & best regards.

I started doing this method but with a sketchbook then I use a tracing sheet to keep the original canvas clean per say and then I always have a permanent copy of the drawing !
