Yet again, you've tapped into the zeitgeist of my childhood. I was there for the medieval revival in the early 1970s. I was a tween at that time, yearning to look like a teen, begging my mother for a velvet dress with pointy bell sleeves and a tapestry bodice that laced up the front. It was sold by Sears in their Junior department, which had the awesome name "The Lemon Frog Shop". I loved that dress! Pearl jewelry is very medieval revival, especially large half-round pearls in the center of a pendant or brooch. Strings of crystals in emerald, sapphire, ruby, or topaz fit the look, too. I made a few unbleached muslin peasant blouses with elastic puffy sleeves and an elastic scoop neck, then proceeded to ruin them with my childishly imperfect embroidery. We embroidered everything in 1969.

Those little skull cap head thingys always do the trick to make an outfit look medieval. Especially if its lace. Nice job bringing a obscure style into the light :)

As a person who likes more gothic style, i often struggle put together a decent fit. This style would go together soooo beautifuly with gothic elements. Gotta be the medieval queen of darkness at my workplace and scare all the children (i am a teacher) 😂❤

@CatAunt202 oh i couldn't agree more, whimsygoth can easily be nudged in a medieval direction!

@somaudlinАй бұрын
@UltimateDorito heck yeah! i'm basing my looks off of the one that happened in the late 60s but there's one happening now in the 2020s and one that happened in the 1920s too!

ohh this is a wealth of information!! ty!! this is giving me so many ideas, even as someone with a more whimsigoth/goth lean something i think could also work for a simple alternation is adding golden trim to a velvet dress, especially thicker ornate trim, ropeish trims. it could be fabric glued and then add some handstitches for durability for someone without a machine. also etsy has a ton of cheap brass stampings. i was looking at sun and moon ones yesterday, as well as some cool nouveau and medieval gargoyle ones. i might try to find a glue that will work with metal and glue a pin back on. i really want to get into brooches myself
@somaudlinАй бұрын
@Faith-wz7hu yesssss!!! you get it! the trim is an especially good idea cause you can find curtain and upholstery trim on ebay for cheap! love the stamp idea too!

For once youtube has recommended me something interesting to watch. I think a lot of things for this style could be crochet or knitted! As you said the caps/hats can easily be knitted/crochet but also the sleeves! I've found many crochet/knitting patterns in charity shops from the 60's/70's that have patterns for waist coats and long flowy or bell sleeved tops that I think could easily be altered to fit a bigger body and/or to fit the style more. The internet archive has a lot of old crochet and knitting patterns that you can find on there and I've seen some hippy/60's inspired crochet patterns here on youtube that could fit too with this style if paired right with other stuff. There's also lots of really cool people that make/recreate historical clothing, if you go searching there are videos and blogs of people telling you how to make these historical garments that could go well with this style (think shirts and shifts). I can't really sew so I either just translate the patterns into crochet or just nerd out over the patterns without making them but even if it isn't specifically medieval I know a lot of historical pieces could fit into this style. For example Vincent Briggs here on youtube has a fantastic tutorial on making a 18th century shirt and whilst that is not medieval, pair it with with a 60's/70's waist coat and long flowy skirt and bam! A very cute outfit indeed. As a bad sewer though I know not everyone can just make a shirt so I think your idea of finding and dying pre-existing shirts works wonders! As a plus size person I can also second the looking for tops that older women might wear. You can find bigger sizes and more 'outdated' shirts in discount shops aimed at an older demographic, I found a really cool 70's-esc shirt in one and often times the martial is slightly better than stuff you'd find at say Primark or H&M (a lot of fast fashion is made out of synthetic fibres so I might be harder to dye.) Also broaches! I've found that second hand shops you can find them for cheap and if you live in an area with more older people then you can find some gems. Anyway, sorry for the rambling, don't know if any of this helps at all, but I love this video!
@somaudlinАй бұрын
@_morgan_7839 yesssss to all of this! i am not skilled in the fiber arts but sometimes I commission my master crocheter aunt to make me stuff haha. soooo many crochet patterns for vests, caps, even puff sleeve dresses. etsy also does have a lot of cool custom made 60s inspired clothing and most of them aren't dicks about working with plus sized people! the possibilities are endless 🤩

medieval revival isn't my personal goal, but i'm glad this got rec'd to me cause i love your approach and style! nonetheless i do relate to trying to curate a wardrobe that's distinctly anachronistic and secondhand/financially sustainable, and will probably be able to adapt some of these tips for my own preferences. (my fav outfits to wear could prolly be called 70s business casual). hope to see more from you and more creators like you!

I tend to dress more 90s like whimsigoth but I do really love this exact style too and I've been wanting to get into it. I'm realizing there's actually quite a bit of overlap so I can get pieces that apply to both kinds of styles, which is better for my wallet and the environment, yay!
@CaeruleaTigris10 күн бұрын
Whimsigoth was undeniably 60s/70s inspired. It may not be totally obvious all of the time but there are some crazy through lines that are undeniably vintage. I think the part that sticks out to me the most is the focus on astrology, tarot, witch vibes, and celestial iconography. Colour trends are also far more similar than we tend to give credit for simply because most people are not familiar with the actual colours that were dominating in the 60s/70s, but rather comtemporary conceptions of what that looked like.
