The Tools Needed:
4.25" Core Drill Bit ($75) - amzn.to/2ZzyT3R
Core Drill Adapter ($12) - amzn.to/38cGmcN
-3/8 chuck Electric Drill
-Wire Brush
-Gloves
-Dryer Vent Kit - www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-...
This is the simplest and cleanest way to put in a 4" hole through brick, cinderblock, from an exterior wall so that you can install a dryer vent for your laundry needs.
It might be advantageous to get a 4.5" Drill, as the Stainless Steel Sleeve was a bit tough to slide in, although with a wire brush and elbow greese - I was able to get it in.

Nice job! But if I may recommend, get a semi-rigid duct. Those foil flex ducts are known to catch more lint and then create a fire hazard.

@trevino37
@trevino37 3 жыл бұрын
You would think that before drilling, you would have inpsected the interior wall first to mark the spot, cleared from studs and possible electrical lines. Cut open the sheet rock, remove the insulation then mark the spot or use a wall scanner, which I am a little less trusting. You got lucky. But thanks for the video, it was good until you mentioned you just missed the stud...lol.

Great, but do yourself a huge favor. Either get aluminum duct or the rigid aluminum flex duct with aluminum dryer duct tape. Those slinky-style dryer vents are flammable and they catch lint.
@69ztang
@69ztang 6 жыл бұрын
FYI I've heard that a rigid vent pipe is prefered because it causes less lint to stick to the exhaust pipe and therefore less chance of a fire.

Supposed to tape the joint from the flex tube to the outside pipe, not use a clamp. This creates an airtight seal.

@sambothebold 2 жыл бұрын
I believe he applied the correct method using the clamp. Its a far superior and professional way to connect. It is a completely airtight seal and will not pull off and come apart like tape will after about 1 week. I run my own ventilation and airconditioning business in the UK and i would always recommend to use a clamp, and some better quality flexi hose that is not prone to tearing. I would also have drilled the hole low level so there were less bends and looked neater 😁

Good job, but was it necessary to have the hose from the dryer so high up the wall? It looked like you could have put it at 1 foot above the floor which is the recommended height. How did it work out?
@Famvestor
@Famvestor Жыл бұрын
For me it was to clear the bulkhead basement door, but yea 1-foot should be fine, but maybe go a little higher if you get snow. Worked out good, still being used now, many years later.

A 4 inch hole has one problem. Most dryer vent kits go around the 4 inch pipe and make the hole needed a little larger. How long did it take for you to wire brush the opening larger?
@Famvestor
@Famvestor 3 жыл бұрын
It took a really long time. I highly recommend getting a 4.125” or 4.25” core drill. That will save a lot of time.

Thanks for the reply and guess. I do have a rotary wire brush attachment. I may try that. I always wondered why these vent louver kits say make a 4.25 inch hole. Now I know. If the hole is 1/8 inch too large you can wrap tape around the louver circle attachment which makes the diameter larger.

@@Famvestor you know, I’m glad you wrote back because I actually wanted to write you. I’m always on here laughing at people who act like the safety police and there I was doing the same thing to you …..so I apologize. It came from a good thought though, but still I could’ve worded it better. The reason I told you what I told you is because I almost ripped off my own fingertip when I had a thin fabric gloves on and I was working with a drill and a common Phillips bit and my fingers were close to the arbor as I was using the drill and somehow the tip of my finger got caught between the arbor and the bit and it started twisting my finger around. Frankly I thought I was gonna lose the tip of my finger but there wasn’t much I could do at that point so I took my finger off the power and I wanted to grab the arbor but I couldn’t let the drill go because my fingertip was hanging from it and so I just kind of move my hand round and round as the drill came to a stop which seemed like forever. When I did my arm and hand and finger were all twisted up because I had contorted myself to keep the fingertip on and the glove was so tight on my finger that I couldn’t even have somebody cut it off at the fingertip we had to cut it off from the wrist and slowly peeled back and finally I got my finger out. While it doesn’t compare to my brainiac maneuver of putting heavy boxes of machine screws on top of my tablesaw while trying to make a zero space insert ….. And while I was raising the blade, somehow the bolts spilled and some rolled towards the spinning blade and as I was ducking for a cover and hitting the off button on the saw I could hear the bolts hitting the blade and basically being shot like out of a shotgun. I don’t know why I told you that story but boy that was stupid. Anyway I didn’t want you to think that I was being a jerky safety police and the gloves I had on that day were very tight fitting so I didn’t even imagine that they could get caught somehow in the drill but there I was with my finger going round and round and it was not fun. I like to wear gloves when I’m working also so what I did was I cut off the fingertips on one set… but I suppose another part of the glove could also get caught somehow anyway be careful brother all the best.

This is what I need for solid concrete, but for hollow block walls just take a hammer and knock a hole in the wall where the center of a cell is on both sides, once you get a hole through just chip away slowly till the pipe fits, then do the same on the other side, and then stucco back around the hole after you insert the pipe. If you make the whole to big, just fill in foam, paper, pieces of block or whatever till you can patch with stucco. I'm a mason and I've done this many times, it's no big deal for block, solid concrete is a different story, gotta have a whole drill for that, or you'll be there forever.
