WHEN IN DOUBT, GET OUT! Have 40 years of driving MH’s and I STILL do this every single time BEFORE backing into a campsite OR when negotiating tight situations like fueling stations 😉: BEFORE moving the coach into harms way… STOP, get out and walk the site or dicey situation. Look for problems including overhead branches, wires, tail swing situations & obstacles that might “reach out and touch you”! Then and only then move your coach, start the lining up and/or backing process. But STOP again (and as often as necessary) to get out and take a how-goes-it peek. Take your time, RUSHING can cost you HUGE. Whether solo or with someone, I ALWAYS do this regardless of how easy a path or campsite looks. Nice tips!

We hired a professional driver to give us lessons when we bought ours. He came out to our house on a Sunday and spent eight hours teaching us how to drive, turn, parallel park, and back-up. Best $400 we ever spent. As a result, I actually drove it more than my husband did! For me, the most important thing was the peace of mind I had in knowing that I could handle the rig all by myself from front to rear. I found great comfort in the knowledge that I could still get us home if something happened to my husband and he couldn't drive. Great video and excellent tips... THANK YOU!!! Honestly, I can't believe they sell these things to people without requiring some sort of driving lessons. They just hand them the keys and turn them loose on the roads.

So glad you did this, Linda! When I had a fifth wheel I also had personalized lessons. It was helpful for sure. I am always advocating that the wife at least know how to drive the rig, should an emergency arise. You sure don't want to learn under pressure. Glad you are prepared and thank you for your comment and kind words!

@@LizAmazing You and Linda are awesome driving your motorhomes! My husband and I have a 36 ft diesel and I have never driven it. I told my husband on our last trip that I wanted to drive it first just through desert where it's just a straight shot, no turns. He didn't want to relinquish driving. He HAS to always be in control meaning having both HIS hands on that steering wheel and his foot controlling the fuel and brakes. LOL! I'm totally fine not driving though. I guess in an emergency I'd have to do it. Or we'd just leave it parked and take our toad home. We always have that with us. Then I'd hire someone to drive the RV home. No big deal.

I am a 68 yr old woman . I own a 2021 winnebago adventure with about 6,000 miles i put on it. I love it. White inside. 3 small slides so i can push them in. Yes, liz, i watched alot of videos, used my side mirrors alot...probably the same ones you did. This year i got a Trucker brand of 4 cameras, installed by a local person...now i have 360 cameras. Handy for a class A. I hope you. Enjoy your motorhome. Once you work out the peramaters of these big boys...they are actually FUN to drive. I will be fulltime

I love the pivot point idea. It makes so much sense. I have one trick that helps me. I use my mirrors and glance in each one. If I can see the white line beside me, then I must be somewhere in the middle! This only works if there are lines on the road, of course, which is not always the case. Also, early on someone told me to not look directly in front of the Rv but to spot ahead. That works and helps me to relax a little.

Using traffic cones is very helpful. I put them inside my storage unit on the driver's side and aim the rv's back corner toward the furtherest cone keeping the side close to the other cones as I back in. I can see the back corner in my side mirror. This makes backing in so easy since I'm by myself. Thank you for your tips!

Thank for your informative video,. I know this will help others.. Do not know if this is for you, but when I pull my horses or any of my trailers. I always have my drivers side window open a little 1”.. This gives allows me to hear what’s going on behind my truck.. This is what my Dad always said to do.. In addition I can listen out for tires and my horses… I constantly am checking my mirrors. Never drive above speed limit, actually 60-65mph is my top speed.. Always looking to refuel at less than half tank.. The window being cracked helped me hear a tire that got popped and I immediately pulled over. I was only going 30-35mph.. Love this video! Happy Trails Michelle~Greenville, FL ❤

Something I learned when I was a truck driver, if things are a little tricky get out of the seat walk around the situation and get a Birdseye view of exactly what you’re trying to do. My instructor called it a survey you basically just get out walk around and figure out what you need to do check all your clearances then go for it.

Great tips! Mirrors are your best friend out here, another tip while driving is to always look ahead. Driving an RV is not like driving a car and we need more led time for stopping, changing lanes, etc. Also, I took a professional class and learned how to tip the road cone back over with my rear tire, that’s when I knew I could handle my 40FT rig. Now I’m 70FT in length, I have a backup camera that came with my Tiffin, installed a dash cam, and have added a more complex camera system to the rig and trailer, which allows me to see clear down the length of my unit, hitch, back of the trailer and can record all while going down the road for safety.

Very good video to provide some actual concrete measures and will test things out. Other video I watched was just obvious stuff, your longer and need to make wider turns blah blah like I don't realize that part. Just bought (first one) and my biggest concern was actually feeling comfortable driving it and not stressed especially in congested areas. The pivot point and with tape markings on mirrors on windshield looks to be a great way to provide an accurate guide. Nice looking unit you have there.

When I drove my 40-45ft school buses, I actually competed in road-e-o's. (precision driving). I won 3 years in a row and wanted to mention about backing a bus in a stall. I would be in that stall and sit in the drivers seat and looking through the right side mirror eye the angle from that back line in the stall to the back right wheel well. I would see where on that wheel well the back line lined up with. It would be about 6" up from the bottom of the rubber bumper that was on the side of the bus. So when I would back into a stall I would watch the wheel well and wait till the line was in that same spot on the rubber bumper and I would stop. When I did that I was the only person in 86 competitors that earned a perfect score in backing my bus. I was a new driver (that year) and I had only practiced for 1 hour for this competition. I was perfectly centered in the stall and was within 6 inches of the back of the stall. That earned the perfect score. Love watching your video's. You have EXCELLENT information about your adventures. Thank you for these video's! Happy Travels!

Liz great video great information about marking your windshield and mirrors, always check your mirrors often to know where the side of your RV is with the line or wall on both sides. There's a sticker you can buy for the top of your mirror, a reminder that you should Get Out And Look, it is just has the letters GOAL. It helps. Again great job.

I drive a 38 foot long school bus for a living, and when it comes to backing up, it pays to walk to the back of the bus, and get a good visual on what is around the area you are gonna be backing into. I cannot just step down off my bus, and walk around to the back because of having numerous children on board, but I can get a really good visual just by walking to the back of the bus on the inside, and checking out the situation through the windows. The Pivot point of the rear axle, and impact zone are about the same as your typical Class A Motorhome. I just recently made a purchase of an older (1991) Fleetwood Flair 22 foot Class A Motorhome that has just 18,000 miles on the Odometer for the price of $2500.00. I can't wait to get it paid off, and get it tagged so that I can make it my Tiny Home on Wheels.
@kevinswinyer3176
@kevinswinyer3176 Жыл бұрын
I just want to add to my last comment that the 22 foot Class A Coach that I just purchased has no power steering because the power steering belt is now gone, not sure if it was just worn out and broke, or if the pump is bad as well, because the Owner of it said that when he drove it home after purchasing it, he had good power steering, but that he went out one morning to take it out for a short run down the short street he lives on and back, and it was then that he noticed that the power steering was no longer working. He managed to get it turned around, and get it back home, and parked, but he didn't bother to dive into why it was no longer working. I found out myself by getting down under the nose of the Coach with a flashlight and discovered that there is no belt on the power steering pump. It looks like replacing it will be a complicated ordeal because it cannot be accessed from out at the front of the Coach, and I am not sure if it can be easily accessed from down below either. I hate the thought of what the repair bill would be if I took it to a Professional Mechanic. I just might have to leave it as is, and just eat lots of wheaties if I plan on turning it around in tight spots.

Buying a RV today and didn’t even cross my mind this might be difficult to drive. I say I’m a very good driver and drifted for many years, I know that has nothing to do with rv but that’s why I’m nervous. I guess just take wide turns and watch for the back swinging out on sharp wheel turn I’m guessing

Thanks for making this video. I've watched others that have the same suggestions as you restated here but my problem is I'm a total loner and have anxiety issues and I get very frustrated with people when communication doesn't go smoothly. So having no one to help me do the placement of the cones and mark the windows, I have to figure out a way to do it by myself. I know it's going to be frustrating and tiring but I can't figure out another way. I bought a 37' Winnebago in April and it was delivered to my location. I have ridden in it but have yet to drive it. I have driven a Class C and that's like driving a van but this is going to be so much different. The more I think about it, the more trepidation I have. I have to get over it.
@LizAmazing

You CAN make the windows by yourself, it will just take longer. Use a grease pencil until you know you've got it in the right place. Just keep taking baby steps and you'll be fine. Or you could sign up for RV Driving School. They are nationwide. Best of luck to you.

@@LizAmazing Thank you. I'm encouraged by your reply. I was thinking that for the exterior mirrors, I could use dry erase markers and then take pics of how the mirror looks from my sitting in the proper position, then I'd have some idea of how the mark needed to be adjusted. Then when I got pretty close, I could switch to the tape or pin striping. Maybe there is a reacher device (like to grab stuff off a top shelf) that can handle finer items to grab. I'll give it my best shot. Thanks again. Bless you.

@@Pack.Leader I replaced my mirror and was able to mark it by myself. From the drivers seat, I studied where the cone appeared in the mirror and then used a lipstick to temporarily mark it. It was easy. Best of luck to you!

Just bought a 45 foot RV and scraped the passengers side (most of it). I did not feel a thing till the last little bit, at the rear wheels it gave a lurch. Did not touch the accelerator pedal it just idled froward. Thought I was going straight and I was just barely turning without realizing it as I pulled out after refueling at a truck stop. I did not fit well or like tight spaces at regular car stops, the diesel pumps are slow their as well. Big spaces and truck stops are your friend. I walked over to fast food places. I definitely feel like it is a 2 person job to drive one of these till you get on the road. I am still mad as heck.

Note every rig is different. I have a Super C and my set up was different for my mirrors. I did take professional RV driving lessons in my rig with RV Driving school. Which I highly recommend. I am 40ft long I have a 55 degree turning radius. Which is amazing. I have alway been a mirror watcher I watch my sides on all turns. Tail swing is tail swing we all know to watch our butts.

@@LizAmazing your mirrors are out front and you are sitting over the front axle. In my super C they are on my doors like any other truck. And I am sitting behind the wheels. My pivot point is not my rear axle. My impact point is directly behind my wheels. Our instructor at RV driving school had to re adjust his technique because our steering radius is 55 degrees. Someone pulled up and was asking him questions I was still on the headset with him and they were asking about our rig and he told them if they were looking for something like that he told them this was the easiest drive he’s ever seen.

Thanks for asking this question, Gene! I think the 10 year rule is more a rumor than the real thing. Very rarely do I get asked, and when I do all they want is a photo. Mainly, they just want to make sure that it is not held together with duct tape! And thanks for watching.

I like your approach for learning how to position in your lane. However, if you depend to heavily on your windshield markers you are focusing too much too close to the RV down the road. While the marks are a learning aid it must be used only as a quick reference for lane positioning. Primary focus must be on the road ahead so that you can anticipate adjustments that must be made because of road conditions. Your secondary focus should be looking for traffic overtaking you. While you looking in your side mirrors you can also very easily see who well you are positioned in the lane. If you can see the lane markings in the mirrors on each side of the coach you can adjust for lane centering if you are too close to one side or the other.
