How to drive on the Motorway - UK tips and tricks

Driving on the Motorway in the UK can seem intimidating to drivers, especially because the UK driving test system doesn't incorporate any lessons on the Motorway and you are not allowed to drive on it before you pass the driving test. In this video I'll be giving you a few tips to making your Motorway experience less stressful and something to look forward to rather than dread!

Agreed about motorway driving being waaaay easier than in town. I live in London and work in Slough, motorway all the way A316-M25-M4. I find this drive so much less stressful than driving anywhere in London, both inner and even suburbs. there is just so much less going on or that could go wrong on a motorway. Obviously, if something goes wrong on a motorway, the end result is much higher to be very bad than at slower speeds in town, but you just have to stay alert and vigilant. Thanks for this video.

I passed my test on friday and went on the M25 on Saturday. I was scared at some point, but God was there for me. Tips: use a good car and have enough petrol on your car, check mirrors always, watch upcoming cars, be alert, don't take no drugs or alcohol before you drive. I'm so proud of myself. I made it!!!!

Good advice. I would add, when overtaking actually overtake. Too many drivers pull alongside a vehicle then match their speed. This often causes long delays for following vehicles.

for info, overtaking on the left is not actually illegal. its discouraged and if done erratically you could be charged with driving without due care but the highway code does not prohibit it

Thanks for this excellent film. The very first time I used the M4 motorway to journey to Wales, I stuck in the inside lane. I was surprised that so many drivers kept sounding their horns, angrily at me. Mind you, I might have been better off in a car rather than walking.

Generally excellent, excellent comments. Merging onto a highway is almost the only time I use a lot of accelerator. 02:48: "Black BMW slowed a bit too much", I note that they were maintaining a safe following distance.

In most countries/states/provinces, only hogging the hammer lane is considered an offense. The middle lane exists as a THRU lane to avoid slow traffic in the right lane (or in the UK -- the LEFT Lane). The Ohio Turnpike (Interstates 76 and 80) was two lanes for the longest time, then a MASSIVE construction project took place 10-15 years ago, and now it's THREE lanes all the way across the state in both directions to better handle increased commercial traffic.

If everybody was to keep the gap you had in front especially in lane one it would leave an insufficient distance for merging traffic. if for some reason a car in front had to break hard and you distracted for any reason, ie, changing your radio, checking your speed, looking at your passenger in conversation, checking your side view mirror etc you would have no chance of avoiding a rear end collision. Also it is not illegal to overtake on inside lane whether traffic is slow moving or not.

Undertaking at speed is considered as careless or dangerous driving, if you don't believe in this try it on the rare occurence that you may come across a police traffic officer, undertaking on congested routes where traffic is slow moving and the lanes move at different speeds is considered ok though constant lane changing in these circumstances may again attract the attention of the police.

simgorm it is not illegal however it does raise eyebrows because it means someone isn't abiding by the rules E.g the driver in the left lane is speeding or the driver in the middle/right lane Is lane hogging or driving under the speed limit

I've always found urban and city driving much more stressful and hazardous than motorway driving, although motorway driving is more fatal if an accident does occur. Although they don't incorporate motorways in driving lessons they do teach dual carriage way use, which has the same basic principals as a motorway. The most dangerous types of roads are rural A and B roads.

Agreed, although I think these days you can go on a motorway as a learner, but it has to be with a certified instructor so you can’t just go on with a parent or friend in the passenger seat. There are a lot of long dual carriageway stretches that are similar to motorways, so that’s really the best means of preparing for them, almost like riding a bike with stabilisers.

Im British and lived in England for 25 years and never drove, I've always used public transport and while never driving on the road myself the rules flow of traffic obviously got into me, Long story short i met my now Wife and moved to the Us to be with her and had to learn to drive straight away my first motorway/ interstate drive was from Florida to North Georgia on I75 around 400 miles, Heading into Atlanta is literally insane parts of that motorway depending on where you enter can be up to 11 lanes of traffic and the slip roads curve and enter from everywhere then when you get past that and head north the roads rise up 5000 feet up into the mountains of Georgia North Carolina and Tennessee, I got threw in the deep end for sure, Yes its daunting at first and there will be sections on the motorway where everyone speeds up for a time for no apparent reason and that does raise the anxiety for a while but for the most part motorway driving to me is actually easier than normal driving the speed becomes relative after a short time and youll find yourself relax that being said the margin for error is obviously less but motorways don't exactly have hairpin turns .

A blind person would pass a driving test in Florida. The I4 is the most dangerous motorway/freeway in the US. The 192 is the most dangerous dual carraigeway/ highway. They cross each other in Orlando. 27% of vehicles registered in Florida are uninsured. The average driver drives like a zombie. From my experience driving there for many years I've noticed at least 50% of drivers are on their mobile phone while driving.

I like to approach the motorway as fast as possible pull straight into the third lane without indicating and then i like to flash the person infront into surrendering back to where they belong. Same goes for exiting, sometimes i like to leave it to the verry last second running over the hash markings and showering the wanker behind with gravel.

The law says it should be impossible to undertake because if you are are in the slow lane because anyone that's in the middle lane that's not overtaking should be in the slow lane so you can overtake them in the middle lane instead.

You missed a bit. Too many times I have seen cars on the hard shoulder attempting to rejoin the traffic. Sitting still indicating and waiting for a gap. NO it is not like being parked in th high street. Use the hard shoulder to accelerate and rejoin the traffic when you have matched the speed. Similarly if you cannot safely join the motorway from the slip road. Use the hard shoulder, don't slam on the brakes.

I prefer the motorway to country roads with only two lanes with a national speed limit and lots of bends, now they are dangerous and something needs to be done. You seem like a nice guy, but I analysed your video frame by frame against the painted road markers in Premiere Pro and you've got about a 0.67 second gap to the car in front (3:05:07 - 3:05:26). You even dismiss the highway code's 2 second rule *like you know better*. There's a HUGE difference between getting into bad habits while driving (distance is a problem in the UK) and endorsing them in a KZbin video to the masses. A recent study reported by the independent (source below) suggested reaction time could be as low as 1.5 seconds, funnily enough, the Department of Transport believed it to be 0.67 seconds. Let's say the study was exaggerated and the DoT is right. In your video just at the point you apply your brakes, you've already caught up to where the car in front of you was when the whole incident started. Are you sure this video is what you want to share with the world? Are you really sure? No you should carry on in the inside lane because if you pull out to the middle then the outside lane to overtake then cut across back to the inside lane when you've overtaken them that's classed as worse than undertaking.
